Founded in 2006 by Daniel Ek and Martin Lorentzon, Spotify is a commercial music streaming service providing digital rights management-restricted content from record labels like Sony, EMI, Warner Music Group, and Universal. It was launched in October 2008 by the Swedish startup Spotify AB. Users can browse or search by artist, album, genre, playlist or record label; meanwhile, “premium” subscriptions remove advertisements and allow users to download music to listen to offline.
It launched in the U.S. in July 2011, and became available in the App Store in April 2013. In March 2014, Spotify launched its own ad campaign on Facebook in addition to its own application promoting Spotify Premium for Students, a discounted offer for its monthly subscription targeted to college students in the U.S.
