Founded in 2002 and launched in 2003, LinkedIn is a business-oriented social networking service created by Reid Hoffman, Allen Blue, Konstantin Guericke, Eric Ly, and Jean-Luc Vaillant. LinkedIn is intended primarily for professional use and allows users to create profiles and connections to each other in an online social network that can facilitate real-world professional relationships.
As of June 2013, the service reported more than 259 million users in more than 200 countries. LinkedIn filed for an initial public offering in January 2011 and traded its first shares on May 19, 2011, under the NYSE symbol LNKD.
Through January 2011, the company received a total of $103 million of investment from Sequoia Capital, Greylock, Bain Capital Ventures, Bessemer Venture Partners, and the European Founders Fund. In 2010, LinkedIn received a $20 million investment from Tiger Global Management LLC and announced its first acquisition, Mspoke.
