Founded by Jeff Bezos in 1994 in Seattle, Wash., Amazon is a global e-commerce company and the world’s largest online retailer. Its sales revenue model means that it makes its money by taking a small percentage of the sale price of each item that it sells through its website.
Amazon started as an online bookstore, eventually diversified to sell DVDs, VHSs, CDs, software, video games, electronics, clothing, furniture, food, toys, jewelry, and other products. Amazon is also known for its consumer electronics, including the Kindle, Fire tablet, and Fire phone. Amazon is also a major provider of cloud computing services.
In 2005, Amazon created Amazon Prime, a membership offering free two-day shipping within the U.S. on all eligible purchases and discounted one-day shipping rates, and unlimited TV and movie streaming through Amazon Prime Instant Video.
