Looking for an inexpensive MP3 player to use for working out, showing off to tourists, and/or other general merriment? Buy.com has the SanDisk Sansa Shaker for the low, low price of $14.99, which includes free shipping. Being that it’s a SanDisk product, there’s an SD slot that you can use to expand upon the 1GB of storage that comes standard. The Shaker has a built-in speaker, two headphone… → Read More
I don’t think this article could have featured a more ridiculous bit of research. I love how incredibly precise they are (14% of kids’ CDs are copyrighted, mp3 players hold 1,770 songs) when they must know their research is completely inaccurate. It’s far more likely that a person’s library of music is entirely pirated, or else entirely legal. These official-sounding… → Read More
Yes, indeed, SanDisk has a vested interest in people buying removable storage cards, seeing as how the company makes its money by selling memory. However, SanDisk’s Jan Hauer – director of product marketing – made an interesting prediction in London earlier today. Hauer predicted that, eventually, MP3 players won’t be outfitted with memory at all. They’ll all use removable storage cards. → Read More
America: Apple pie, baseball, democracy, and digital audio players. Launching on May 26 (but available for pre-order now), the $35.99 ZVUE Spirit is an MP3 player preloaded with 15 of the most patriotic songs ever. How patriotic, you may ask? So patriotic that James Brown and Lynyrd Skynyrd made the list TWICE. The Spirit has 1GB of memory on-board so you can load it up with other songs too. → Read More
Don’t get me wrong; I like Batman. I think he’s a cool guy. I don’t think he gets nearly the credit he deserves, being that he has no actual superpowers other than a love of gadgets and cars that run on jet fuel. And he’s the perfect guy to own a bat-shaped MP3 player because, hey, pretty much everything he owns is bat-shaped or has some sort of bat logo. It’s a… → Read More
Not to be confused with the PEBL, the Samsung Pebble music player is about the size of the iPod Shuffle and features the same basic button layout although this model has a few EQ presets for the EQ inclined. The players have 1GB of on-board memory and play back MP3, WMA, and OGG. I really have no problems with this thing. It’s almost perfect: small, compact, colorful, and probably cheap. → Read More
I would have preferred that Polaroid just ran itself into the ground making the same exact Polaroid film cameras and cartridges, but someone got ambitious over there and now they’re getting into the business of making just about everything. Coming soon is a new PMP, and believe it or not, they didn’t call it the PMPeroid, which would have sold so many. The PMP itself sports a… → Read More
Oh wow, I guess I’m getting old. Did anyone else own this player — the Eiger Labs MPMan? This is the 64-megabyte F20 shown here but I had the 32-megabyte F10. Remember how it hooked up to your computer via Parallel port and took forever to transfer songs? Apparently the prototype for this device was shown at CeBIT back in March of 1998 before going on sale in May of the same year. My… → Read More

Doug Aamoth here in beautiful, romantic Paris (Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas) for the Sony Electronics 2008 Open House — or as I like to call it, the SoLec08OpHo. Awww, will you look at that? Brought to you by a company named Newman (not to be confused with Newman, left), it’s two halves of a heart-shaped MP3 player exchanging a tender kiss. You and a loved one could exchange your own tender kiss before work, split the MP3 player apart, and each listen to your half on your separate trains. Then when you get back home, reattach the two MP3 players to… → Read More
A teen being investigated in connection with a murder secretly used the MP3 player in his pocket to record an interrogation that the detective working the case swore under oath never took place. I’ve always wondered whether or not detectives searched suspects before locking themselves in an interrogation room. You’d think they’d at least check for weapons but who knows, maybe… → Read More

Will the impending Toshiba Gigabeat U series be the new Nano killer? No. And I’m ashamed that I even used that cheap, sensationalistic journalism tactic. I don’t know what got into me. There are three models; the U104, the U205, and the U206. The U104 features 1GB of memory. The U205 and U206 each have 2GB and feature FM reception and a built-in FM transmitter. They all have OLED… → Read More
Those of you who have fond memories of October 5th, 2007 may remember our very own Peter Ha publishing a post called Samsung MP3 player duo deets updated. It’s called BlueWave… → Read More

The second-generation iriver Clix is an impressive little device, but iriver followed in SanDisk’s footsteps and used its partnership with Rhapsody to create a pretty slick little end-to-end solution called the Clix Rhapsody. That means the Clix now comes with Rhapsody DNA firmware and works with the Windows-only Rhapsody software, which lets you transfer Rhapsody Channels and subscription… → Read More
Einstein said, “Everything should be made as simple as possible, but no simpler.” Few companies in the MP3 player business grasp this important principle, and it continues to bite them in the assets. iRiver and SanDisk are feverishly trying to keep up the pace of feature bloat, while Archos and Creative are increasingly focusing on video players. Meanwhile, Sony is getting ready to… → Read More
Don’t want your music-loving 8- to 11-year-old running around with an iPod? In my Brooklyn neighborhood, I’m surrounded by Christians, Hasidic and non-Hasidic Jews, Rastafarians, Santeria initiates, and the occasional Sikh. When I lived in Seattle and listened all the time to KEXP, I would have loved to have had the PopCatcher MusicDock MD-601. On the surface, it’s just a decent looking FM radio with a dock at the top for connecting the included MP3 player, presumably for recording music directly to the portable. That alone wouldn’t be particularly interesting, since there are a number of digital audio… → Read More
