  • New Nano vs. New Zune: Fight!

Microsoft’s preemptive strike against Apple yesterday may not have the star power of the Stevenote (Jack Johnson?), but it did make the Zune even more competitive. As of this moment, the li’l Zune and iPod Nano have the same capacities and same pricing. So unless you’re already committed to buying one or the other, you may want to look at their capabilities before dropping… Read More

  • New iPod Nano: tiny and colorful, like a baby cockatoo

I’m sure you were witness to live coverage of the Stevenote, whether here or elsewhere. You must have seen that the new Nano is now actually available to buy. What’s new? Well, it’s extremely tiny for one thing. I didn’t think it could get much smaller even before the fat nano, but this thing is a real wisp. They also have more space, with 8GB for $150 and 16GB for… Read More

  • Samsung ‘Litmus’ and ‘Diamond’ MP3 players

Recently announced by Samsung, the YP-U4 Litmus (above left) and the YP-Q1 Diamond (above right) MP3 players offer some unique features. The Litmus will pack a 1-inch OLED screen, DNSe (“Dense”) 2.0 audio circuitry, and recordable hot keys so you can access the functions you use most often. Battery life is rated at 16 hours and the device handles MP3, WMA, and OGG files. FM… Read More

  • Back to School: MP3 players

Students! You’re going to be spending a lot of time, on and off the quad, listening to music. I made it through college with an MP3-CD player, but that doesn’t mean you have to. Click through for our list of best MP3 players for a college student. Read More

  • "World's thinnest MP4 player" is 4.5mm thick

At some point we are going to run into the issue of media players just cutting their way out of our pockets. You’ll have to buff the edges so you don’t slice your fingers off while changing tracks. I guess we’re not quite at that point, but 4.5mm is pretty damn thin. This thing doesn’t have much branding, and I’m not sure I can count on a place called… Read More

  • Sony's new E-series mp3 players pop up on NZ site

The latest revision of Sony’s little Walkman E-series mp3 players has hit New Zealand first, apparently, and they appear to be more or less what was expected. 2GB, 4GB, and 8GB versions of the lightweight players will be available, and though the prices aren’t there yet, you can probably expect them to be roughly analogous to their older cousins — around $150-$250 for the range. • iRiver Spinn caught on video, looks hot

We saw this thing last week and it looked sweet, but it’s so hard to tell about an interface without seeing it in action. Looks to me like the touchscreen works well, and although the interface doesn’t look as clean as other players, iRiver gadgets have historically done more stuff out of the box. I really can’t wait to get a hands-on with one of these things — hint… Read More

  • Hello Kitty mobile phone for The Fonz

You know how Fonzie could control the jukebox by hitting it with his fist in just the right spot? The record would change and just what everybody wanted to hear would start playing. Well, this is the phone for him. Sporting Bluetooth, a 1 megapixel camera, and a touch screen, the Shake Music Free G68 bright pink and oh so very Hello Kitty. The Fonz is just about as cool as this phone which… Read More

  • Dell developing another line of MP3 players?

I still have my 20GB Dell DJ (the one on the left up there). It’s been sitting in a box marked “To Sell on eBay” for, oh, at least three years along with my Nokia 770 Internet Tablet, my first-generation Nintendo DS, and a couple of ink cartridges for an old Lexmark printer. Bad news for me, as it appears the value of my old Dell music player might plummet when Dell’s… Read More

  • Creative ZEN Krystal features built-in pedometer

It appears that Creative has released a new MP3 player in the ZEN Krystal. Unfortunately, it seems that it’s only available in Hong Kong at the moment but perhaps it’ll eventually make its way stateside. The Krystal runs for about $90 and features 4GB of storage, OLED display, simple drag and drop file management (no drivers required), FM radio, voice recorder, three games, and… Read More

Being that it’s a SanDisk product, there’s an SD slot that you can use to expand upon the 1GB of storage that comes standard. The Shaker has a built-in speaker… Read More

  • Shock report: Teenagers have pirated songs on their mp3 players

I don’t think this article could have featured a more ridiculous bit of research. I love how incredibly precise they are (14% of kids’ CDs are copyrighted, mp3 players hold 1,770 songs) when they must know their research is completely inaccurate. It’s far more likely that a person’s library of music is entirely pirated, or else entirely legal. These… Read More

  • SanDisk pushes removable media for all music devices

Yes, indeed, SanDisk has a vested interest in people buying removable storage cards, seeing as how the company makes its money by selling memory. However, SanDisk’s Jan Hauer – director of product marketing – made an interesting prediction in London earlier today. Hauer predicted that, eventually, MP3 players won’t be outfitted with memory at all. They’ll all… Read More

  • On the boats and on the planes, it's the ZVUE Spirit

America: Apple pie, baseball, democracy, and digital audio players. Launching on May 26 (but available for pre-order now), the $35.99 ZVUE Spirit is an MP3 player preloaded with 15 of the most patriotic songs ever. How patriotic, you may ask? So patriotic that James Brown and Lynyrd Skynyrd made the list TWICE. The Spirit has 1GB of memory on-board so you can load it up with other songs too. Read More

  • Batman MP3 player looks pretty stupid unless you're Batman, because all his stuff is shaped like bats

Don’t get me wrong; I like Batman. I think he’s a cool guy. I don’t think he gets nearly the credit he deserves, being that he has no actual superpowers other than a love of gadgets and cars that run on jet fuel. And he’s the perfect guy to own a bat-shaped MP3 player because, hey, pretty much everything he owns is bat-shaped or has some sort of bat logo. It’s… Read More

  • Samsung Pebble, S3 MP3 players show great promise

Not to be confused with the PEBL, the Samsung Pebble music player is about the size of the iPod Shuffle and features the same basic button layout although this model has a few EQ presets for the EQ inclined. The players have 1GB of on-board memory and play back MP3, WMA, and OGG. I really have no problems with this thing. It’s almost perfect: small, compact, colorful, and probably cheap. Read More

  • Polaroid makes PMPs now instead of Polaroids

I would have preferred that Polaroid just ran itself into the ground making the same exact Polaroid film cameras and cartridges, but someone got ambitious over there and now they’re getting into the business of making just about everything. Coming soon is a new PMP, and believe it or not, they didn’t call it the PMPeroid, which would have sold so many. The PMP itself sports a… Read More

  • MP3 players coming up on ten year anniversary

Oh wow, I guess I’m getting old. Did anyone else own this player — the Eiger Labs MPMan? This is the 64-megabyte F20 shown here but I had the 32-megabyte F10. Remember how it hooked up to your computer via Parallel port and took forever to transfer songs? Apparently the prototype for this device was shown at CeBIT back in March of 1998 before going on sale in May of the same… Read More

  • 'Sony Electronics 2008 Open House' preview

Doug Aamoth here in beautiful, romantic Paris (Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas) for the Sony Electronics 2008 Open House — or as I like to call it, the SoLec08OpHo. I’ll be getting my gigantic man-hands on all these products (and then some) very soon — but for now, here’s some of what to expect out of Sony today. Read More
