Where Was Facebook At The Apple Event Today? Not There. Stay Tuned.

log-in

One of the things noticeably absent from Apple’s iPhone event today was Facebook. After all, other outlets were reporting that they would for sure be a part of the event. Late last week, we reported hearing that could be the case, but that the two sides were still talking and that Facebook had a back-up plan just in case Apple didn’t give them the go ahead. And for good reason.

We’ve heard from… → Read More

The Planets Are Aligned: Facebook’s Spartan And iPad Projects Set To Launch Early Next Week

eclipse95

Earlier tonight, Alexia found and posted some screenshots of something that sure looked a lot like the mythical “Project Spartan“. Shortly thereafter, Facebook took down the page in question. And for good reason. That was Project Spartan, we’ve now confirmed.

Whoops.

Well, to be fair, I’ve heard numerous times that they don’t actually call it that internally. That may be a name that external… → Read More

Facebook’s Spartans Ready For Battle, But War Won’t Come At f8

300-Movie-Publicity-Still-300-222355_1500_705

Facebook’s f8 is quickly approaching — by all accounts, it’s going to be massive. Ten days ago, I laid out some of what we were hearing would be coming. Now it’s time for one important update — for something not coming: Project Spartan.

Facebook’s HTML5 app project (which will not be called Spartan at launch) is ready to go. But the latest word is that Facebook is worried that the project… → Read More

Forget Apps, Carbyn Has Built A HTML5 OS

Screen Shot 2011-09-15 at 6.14.48 PM

HTML5, HTML5, HTML5 — it seems to be the only thing anyone wants to talk about these days. And that excitement could get kicked into overdrive next week when Facebook unveils Project Spartan, their platform for HTML5 apps. But why wait? A startup that launched at TechCrunch Disrupt has already built an entire HTML5-based OS: Carbyn.

The great thing about Carbyn is that there’s nothing to… → Read More

BoltJS: Another Secret Piece Of Facebook’s Spartan Puzzle?

Screen Shot 2011-08-29 at 4.37.09 PM

After a steady stream of information in June, all has been quiet on the Facebook Project Spartan front in recent weeks. Originally, at least some thought the plan was to unveil Spartan in July — but that obviously came and went. It’s certainly possible we won’t hear anything until f8 in late September now. But one new bit of information has come to our attention that could be related. Say hello… → Read More

Facebook Will Bring Credits To Mobile Browsers

fbc

Over a month ago, we first reported on Project Spartan, Facebook’s secret plan to bring applications to the mobile web via HTML5. Facebook is working with teams of third-party developers that they call their “Spartans” and hope to unveil the project later this summer. As we noted, the key to all of this is really Credits. Right now, Facebook has no way to make money on any of the mobile platforms… → Read More

On The Eve Of One Facebook Event, The Spartans Prepare For Another

Tomorrow morning at their headquarters in Palo Alto, Facebook is holding an event to show off an “awesome” new product. Our sources tell us that product with be the long-rumored Skype integration within Facebook for full-on video chat goodness — just a week after arch nemesis Google unveiled Hangouts as a part of Google+. Given that news has already leaked out, it’s certainly possible that… → Read More

What's Facebook Releasing Next Week? Not Project Spartan.

Apparently, Facebook is gearing up to show off something “awesome” next week. At least, that’s what CEO Mark Zuckerberg told reporters while he was visting the Seattle Facebook offices yesterday. Reuters reports that whatever it is, it has been developed by the 40-person team based in Seattle. And they think it might be in the mobile or tablet space.

All we know for sure is that it won’t be → Read More

OMG/JK: The iPhone Empire Strikes Back?

This week’s episode of OMG/JK is a long one — the longest yet, in fact, at 30 minutes. Jason and I apologize for going on and on but we had a lot to talk about. It’s been roughly three weeks since we last recorded an episode and a ton of stuff has happened.

And while we don’t even come close to getting through all of it, we do go pretty in-depth on some of the major things: iPhone vs. Android… → Read More

Facebook PR: Tonight We Dine In Hell!

There’s currently something going on in the outskirts of the tech world that’s a bit sensitive, so no one really likes to talk about it: we (journalists, bloggers, etc) are at war with the PR industry.

That sentence alone will throw the PR flacks into a tizzy. “Hyperbole!” “Sexy statement, no substance!” “Don’t believe everything you read!” And all the other bullshit they typically spew to blunt… → Read More

Yes, Despite All The HTML5 Talk (And Action), Facebook Is Finally Doing An iPad App

The leaking of Facebook continues. Following our stories yesterday about their new Photos mobile app and “Project Spartan” (a new mobile app platform), Nick Bilton of The New York Times reports that Facebook will soon release an iPad app. Yes, finally.

We had also heard in recent weeks that despite Facebook’s seemingly anti-iPad stance, such an app does exist internally, and has for some time. → Read More
