Developed by Amazon and released in 2007, the Amazon Kindle is an e-book reader that enables users to shop for, download, browse and read e-books, newspapers, magazines, blogs, and other digital media via wireless networking.
The hardware for the Kindle was developed by Amazon.com subsidiary, Lab126. It began as a single device and now comprises a range of devices, including dedicated e-readers with E Ink electronic paper displays and Android-based tablets with color LCD screens. In addition to the low-priced Kindle, the Kindle line includes: the Kindle Keyboard; the Kindle Paperwhite and Paperwhite 3G; the Kindle Fire tablet; and the Kindle.
Content for the Kindle can be purchased online and downloaded using standard Wi-Fi or Amazon’s 3G “Whispernet” network.
