Sprint’s EVO 4G LTE Has Cleared U.S. Customs, Pre-Orders To Be Filled As Early As May 24

    evo7

Sprint’s launch plans for the HTC EVO 4G LTE were ruined last week when shipments of their shiny new Android handset were held up by United States Customs, but we’re hearing that they may been hitting doorsteps and store shelves sooner than expected.

According to Sprint, the devices are now currently sitting safely in Sprint’s warehouses and are expected to start trickling out into the world “on or around May 24.” → Read More

It’s Official: HTC’s EVO 4G LTE To Hit Sprint Shelves On May 18

    evo1

Pre-orders for Sprint’s new EVO 4G LTE have been open for a few days now, but Sprint has finally gotten around to announcing when we’ll actually be able to get our hands on one.

Starting on May 18, you’ll be able to shell out $199 through your sales channel of choice in exchange for the carrier’s new flagship Android phone. → Read More

Virgin Mobile Gets Its First Taste Of WiMax With The $299 EVO V 4G

    evov4g

While Sprint customers wait with bated breath for their new LTE network to go live, the nation’s third largest wireless carrier has just announced that their no-contract subsidiary Virgin Mobile will soon launch their first 4G phone. Starting on May 31, customers will be able to pick up their very own Evo V 4G from Virgin Mobile’s website, with a wider release to come in June.

    Despite the device’s name, the Ice Cream Sandwich-powered EVO V 4G isn’t actually a WiMax-friendly version of HTC’s chintastic One V (bummer, I know). → Read More

Android Is Either “Winning” Because Apple Is Letting It, Or Losing

Screen Shot 2012-05-02 at 11.37.53 PM

In September 2010, I wrote a post that ignited an absolute shitstorm around these parts. “Shitstorm” in this case meaning a post with a thousand comments, the majority of which were spewed up by rabid Android fanatics. The title of that post:

Is Android Surging Only Because Apple Is Letting It?

At the time, we were in the midst of a massive Android surge to the top of the smartphone ecosystem food chain. This was happening all around the world, but the focus of this particular post was the U.S. market. Based on some comments made by developer David Beach at the time, I wondered if, as the title suggested, Android was only doing so well in the U.S. because the iPhone was still only available on one carrier, AT&T?

It’s time to revisit that thought because there’s now absolutely no question that this was the case. There’s now data to back it up. What’s more, despite what some surveys suggest, this trend may have fully reversed itself. → Read More

New York Hits Sprint With $300 Million Lawsuit Over 7 Years Of Tax Dodging [Update: Sprint Responds]

    sprint-logo

Sprint’s had its fair share of problems to deal with as of late, but who knew one of them would be taxes? According to a new flurry of new reports, New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman has filed a $300 million lawsuit against Sprint for (among other things) non-payment of taxes, and falsifying official tax documents.

According to Reuters, Sprint failed to collect (and subsequently pass along) over $100 million of taxes from their customers over the past seven years. Schneiderman, who is picking up where a whistle-blower lawsuit filed against the carrier early last year, is seeking three times the amount of Sprint’s underpayment plus additional penalties for good measure.

Sprint Goes Green (Yet Again) With The Eco-Conscious LG Optimus Elite

    LG_Optimus_Elite_Indy_LN696_white_GVR

Well, Sprint certainly seems hell-bent on making this Earth Day one to remember. Not only have they decided to launch the LTE-friendly LG Viper and Galaxy Nexus on April 22, Sprint has announced that they have chosen that same day to release the new eco-friendly LG Optimus Elite.

Unlike the flashier handsets launching alongside it, the Optimus Elite is unlikely to turn too many heads. It’s a strictly entry-level device, though I imagine its $30 price tag (after a $50 mail-in rebate) should help it pick up a little steam among first time smartphowners. → Read More

Sprint’s $199 Galaxy Nexus Launches On April 22 With $40 Google Wallet Credit In Tow

    sprintgalnex

If they haven’t already done it, Sprint customers in need of an upgrade should make it a point to circle April 22 on their calendars.

Not only has Sprint chosen that day to launch their eco-friendly LG Viper, the nation’s third largest wireless carrier has just confirmed on Twitter that the Galaxy Nexus will be available for $199 (with contract) that same day.

HTC And Sprint Officially Unveil The New EVO 4G LTE

    evo_views

It’s hardly a surprise anymore (as is usually the case) but here it is anyway — Sprint CEO Dan Hesse and HTC President Jason Mackenzie have just taken the stage at their collaboration event in New York, and just officially unveiled the new EVO 4G LTE.

For all my moaning about design (more on that later), my mother always taught me that it’s what’s on the inside that counts, and that’s where the EVO shines. → Read More

No LTE, No Problem: Sprint’s $100 LG Viper Goes Up For Pre-Order On April 12

    viper

Sprint still hasn’t launched their new LTE network yet, but if a new announcement about a LTE-capable handsey is any indication, they’re getting pretty close. Though the existence of a Sprint-bound Galaxy Nexus probably overshadowed it a bit, Sprint has announced that LG’s eco-friendly Viper handset will be available for pre-order beginning on April 12 with a release soon to follow. → Read More

Please Don’t Let This Be What The EVO One Looks Like

    evoone

Well, I suppose it was bound to happen. Just one day before HTC and Sprint kick off their so-called collaboration event in New York City, the team at PocketNow has gotten their hands on what they claim is the first press shot of the device to be unveiled: the EVO One.

The device’s supposed internals sure seem to be a treat, at least according to a tip that Android Central received a few days ago. The ICS-powered EVO One is expected to sport a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor, a 4.7-inch 720p AMOLED display (which The Verge rightly notes is a slight letdown compared to the One X’s Super LCD 2 panel), an LTE radio, 16GB of onboard storage, and Beats Audio support. → Read More

Sprint And HTC Announce “Collaboration Event” In NYC On April 4th

    fixedinvite

Oh you guuuuys. Rather than just call it what it is (a press conference) Sprint and HTC have just sent out invitations to what they’re calling a “collaboration event” taking place in New York City on April 4. The invitation (as always) is delightfully vague, leaving the rest of us to speculate endlessly in the days leading up to the event.

If the ever-churning rumor mill is to be believed though, this little confab could feature an official announcement of a Sprint-bound HTC One X, the handful of a device that wowed the tech press at this year’s Mobile World Congress. → Read More

Sprint’s Galaxy Nexus To Launch On April 15?

    Galaxy-Nexus

According to an internal Sprint source that spoke with S4GRU, the Galaxy Nexus will show up on Sprint shelves on April 15. You know, just over three months since the Verizon version launched and mere months away from the launch of Samsung’s next flagship: the Galaxy S III.

    Talk about good timing.

Still, Sprint could use this phone on its network, even if the Nexus heyday has already come and gone. The Nexus line is like the Galaxy line, or the Droid line, or even the iPhone line. It’s a brand people trust, and will offer a super solid option to power users bumbling into Sprint stores. → Read More

Sprint Officially Kills LightSquared Deal, Returns $65M In Prepayments

    lightsquared

It only seemed like a matter of time before things got worse for LightSquared, and today the nation’s third largest wireless carrier has dealt the ailing company another significant blow. With the upstart network provider unable to land FCC approval thanks to some pesky GPS interference issues, Sprint has announced that they have chosen to officially terminate their agreement with LightSquared. → Read More

Sprint Lost A Lot Of Money Selling Lots Of iPhones

    medium_3057394034

Call it a sort of a bear hug: Sprint, the also-ranniest of the also-rans in the carrier world, lost money selling phones that, on the aggregate gained them subscribers. It’s also Catch-22, a blindside, and a mess.

According to Sprint, the company reported a net loss last quarter while still selling 1.8 million iPhones and increasing their subscriber base by 1.6 million. How? The costs associated with provisioning and supporting these new phones drove operating losses to $438 million, up from $139 million in Q4 last year. → Read More

Thanks to an update that started making the rounds yesterday, Samsung’s Epic 4G Touch joins a handful of Sprint devices to get the Carrier IQ cleanup treatment. → Read More

Sprint Plans To Kill The BlackBerry PlayBook… Again

    playbookkilled

For the second time over the course of a year, it would seem as though Sprint’s ready to kill the BlackBerry PlayBook. A new version of the PlayBook OS is set to debut in February, but according to an EOL (End of Life) report out of SprintFeed, Sprint isn’t prepared for the wait. Not even for a week.

Of course, the WiFi-only PlayBook will still be available at various office stores like Best Buy and from RIM directly, but Sprint’s execution of the PlayBook marks the end of the product’s life on a carrier shelf. → Read More

HTC And Sprint Working On Software Updates That Remove Carrier IQ

Most of the furor surrounding the Carrier IQ diagnostic software has wound down by now, but that doesn’t mean that the companies involved have already forgotten. HTC has confirmed to The Verge that they were working with Sprint to push out maintenance updates that would remove the Carrier IQ software from affected devices. → Read More

Online Ad Confirms A Sprint-Bound Galaxy Nexus (Update: With 1.5GHz Processor)

    sprintnexus2

Well that was… timely. It was just a little while ago that Sprint CEO Dan Hesse dropped some details about his company’s forthcoming network, and now a Sprint Galaxy Nexus ad has just appeared on CNET’s website.

If this ad proves to be legitimate (and I’ve got all my fingers crossed), Sprint customers may truly be rewarded for their patience. Hovering over the bottom right touchpoint reveals a very tantalizing tidbit: Sprint’s variant will apparently have a 1.5GHz processor instead of the 1.2GHz proc as seen in the international and Verizon models. Wow. → Read More
