Despite the fact that Apple’s store was an absolute mess yesterday when it relaunched with the new iPad, it would seem people are still finding a way to get their pre-order on. So much so, in fact, that white versions of the 16GB and 64GB AT&T 4G iPads have been given a new, later shipping date of March 19.
This is not even close to a surprise. In fact, we kind of expected the ship dates to get pushed back even sooner. Black models in each storage flavor seem to still be ready to ship on March 16, and Verizon’s 4G LTE iPads are also still on track. Welcome to the brave new world, everyone. AT&T announced today new guidelines in regards to older so-called unlimited data plans. Subscribers will still be able to keep these plans but they’re essentially limited to AT&T’s new 3GB/5GB data plans.

A vulnerability has been discovered on AT&T’s website which allows anyone to look up the phone numbers of AT&T subscribers, provided they have the subscriber’s email address. The issue involves a form on AT&T’s site where a subscriber can input their email address in order to recover their forgotten AT&T User ID. Except instead of simply emailing the User ID to the email address provided, the following page reveals the wireless phone number associated with that account.

Though it may not always seem like it, big wireless carriers are still stuck on the concept of push-to-talk communication. It’s easy to see why — instanteous communication between multiple people can be a huge benefit in certain lines of work, and and catering to those groups often leads to some hefty service contracts. To that end, AT&T has announced that they have launched a new charter program geared toward getting push-to-talk smartphones in front of business customers.

AT&T Senior Executive VP John Donovan took to the company’s Innovation Space blog to talk wireless data, and the statistics he brings to the table are nothing if not impressive. Among other tidbits, Donovan revealed that the carrier’s wireless data traffic has at least doubled every year since 2007.
“Over the past five years, AT&T’s wireless data traffic has grown 20,000%,” he said.
He pegs this “wireless data tsunami” on the growing popularity of smartphones, and AT&T’s recent numbers back him up. The nation’s second largest wireless carrier picked up a total of 8.9 million new subscribers in 2011, and broke their own quarterly records by selling 9.4 million smartphones during the year’s fourth quarter. But with wireless data use on the uptick, AT&T is going to have to get creative when it comes to managing their data networks. → Read More
If you’re an AT&T customer coming off of a contract and looking to snap up a new phone, you should get on that right now. According to an AT&T memo obtained by BGR, AT&T will be raising their device upgrade fee from $18 to $36 as of February 12, which means you’ve got until Sunday to swap phones before your first post-upgrade bill gets even bigger.
The memo states that the fee hike is needed because “the overall costs associated with upgrading to a new device have increased.” → Read More

On the heels of the news that AT&T delivered its best quarter ever in terms of smartphone sales, the communications company and carrier is releasing its quarterly data on the number of AT&T wi-fi connections made in Q4 and in 2011 as a whole.
AT&T sais that it tripled Wi-Fi network traffic in 2011 versus network traffic for 2010. And the network saw a 550 percent increase in monthly Wi-Fi data uploads from mobile devices on the AT&T Wi-Fi network in 2011, driven by increasing use of cloud services. → Read More
AT&T this morning released its earnings for the fourth quarter of 2011. Consolidated revenues clocked in at $32.5 billion, up 3.6 percent compared to the year-earlier quarter. They recorded a huge net loss for Q4 2011: $6.7 billion, or $1.12 per diluted share.

Nokia CEO Stephen Elop was all too eager to show off the Lumia 900 at this year’s CES, but he unfortunately kept to himself when it came to its price or release date. Now, thanks to a timely leak, it looks as though Nokia’s flagship Windows Phone could hit AT&T’s shelves on March 18.

Shortly before the AT&T/T-Mobile merger came to its ignominious end, Dish Network CEO Joseph Clayton casually expressed his interest in a partnership with T-Mobile as a means of bringing wireless voice service to Dish customers.
Those plans may not pan out if AT&T has anything to do with it. A new report from Bloomberg indicates that AT&T is apparently so hard up for additional spectrum that they’re considering shelling out “the highest premium in more than a decade” to acquire the satellite TV provider and their spectrum holdings. → Read More

We heard earlier today that AT&T and T-Mobile couldn’t find buyers for assets that could help make their merger a reality, but now there’s no need to worry about it: AT&T has just announced that the deal is officially dead.
In a recent release (reproduced in full after the jump), AT&T points at the FCC and the U.S. Department of Justice, and states that the actions of the two parties “do not change the realities of the U.S. wireless industry.”

Senator Al Franken pressed certain members of the wireless industry over two weeks ago for answers about their use of Carrier IQ, the controversial monitoring software that sparked fears that our personal data was being tracked without consent.
