Developed by Amazon and released in 2007, the Amazon Kindle is an e-book reader that enables users to shop for, download, browse and read e-books, newspapers, magazines, blogs and other digital media via wireless networking.
The hardware for the Kindle was developed by Amazon.com subsidiary Lab126. It began as a single device and now comprises a range of devices, including dedicated e-readers with E Ink electronic paper displays and Android-based tablets with color LCD screens. The Kindle line includes the Kindle Keyboard, the Kindle Paperwhite and Paperwhite 3G, the Kindle Fire tablet, and the Kindle.
Content for the Kindle can be purchased online and downloaded using standard Wi-Fi or Amazon’s 3G “Whispernet” network.
