Nintendo has let the world know that the DS is the single best selling video game console of all time in the U.S. Of all time~! It makes you wonder whether or not Nintendo really ought to be concerned at all with the likes of mobile phone-based gaming. After all, isn’t Angry Birds, the single most important video game of all time, now available on non-mobile phone platforms? → Read More
Duke Nukem Forever has popped up on Amazon and GameStop with a May 31, 2011 release date. Considering both pre-order pages are linked from the official Duke Nukem Forever Web site there’s probably a good chance that the game will be spinning inside your 360/PS3 on (or by) that date. → Read More
We’re rapidly approaching the release of the Nintendo 3DS, and all sorts of things are being speculated right now. The latest concerns the price: what will it be? Nintendo has already said that it’ll launch on February 26, and that it will retail for JP¥25,000. That converts, at time of writing, to around $306. But will it actually be that expensive? → Read More
Trusting in TorrentFreak’s numbers, Call of Duty: Black Ops was the most downloaded (read: pirated) game of 2010. You probably could have predicted that, but there’s something far more interesting in the Xbox 360 numbers, and it’s that Black Ops was only the fifth most pirated game of the year. The number one Xbox 360 game on this ignominious list is Dante’s Inferno. That’s an odd one. → Read More
How many of you played Resident Evil 4 and thought to yourself, “Man, Leon has a really nice jacket”? I certainly did. Like, I really did: I walked around stupid New York trying to find a jacket that even resembled his jacket. No luck. If only Capcom had thought of this sooner, then. → Read More
OK, this is great. It’s a “real life” version of Call of Duty, complete with a guy running around in an old Andriy Shevchenko shirt. Oh, how I laughed! → Read More
It’s the end of the year, and that means many publications are rolling out their annual “best of” list. I don’t know if *we’re* doing anything along those lines, but I *do* have a bone to pick with 1UP. They’ve a delightful little list of 10 things the Xbox 360 did to change gaming forever. You already know most of the list before reading it: Achievement Points, Microsoft Points (1UP calls them “convenient” to use across Microsoft’s various services, as if dollars can’t be used in exchange for goods and services…), Kinect, and general entertainment use (things like Netflix streaming). But the one thing that has my dander up? That the Xbox 360 ushered in an era of HD gaming. Ha! → Read More
It seems like it was only *the day before today* when in-game ads were all the rage. I even remember candidate Obama taking out campaign ads in one of those racing games. Those days may be coming to an end, with EA saying that micro-transactions, and not in-game ads, are the *true* source of additional revenue for publishers. That’s good news and bad news. It’s good news for those of you who *hate* to see in-game ads, but it’s bad news for those of you who *equally hate* having to pay 75 cents every time you cast a spell in an MMO, or shoot off a round of ammunition in an FPS. → Read More
Not to alarm you all, but Steam has just started its annual Holiday sale. There’s a new user interface going on and I have no idea how to navigate it. Exciting! → Read More
My bad, guys. I had meant to post this two days ago, but I was busy meeting a super-secret company in preparation for CES. At the very least I now know CES will have at least one fun device to look forward to. Moving on. This here is a video talking about Rockstar’s brand new motion capture technology that’s being used in the creation of LA Noire. → Read More
Did we all beat Fallout: New Vegas yet? It’s been two months now, even if the latest game-saving patch only came out on Monday for the PC. (Xbox 360 users are still waiting for the patch, as a matter of fact.) In any event, I’ve just stumbled across this trailer for a fan-made movie called “Fallout: Nuka Break.” It is, in fact, surprisingly well done. → Read More
Bad news, sports fans. It looks like Square Enix has had to delay to the release of Deus Ex: Human Revolution from early 2011 to sometime in April. And that’s not even the worst news for Squeenix this day. → Read More
Nintendo has sent certain media outlets an invitation to some sort of event in Amsterdam on January 19, 2011. Considering Nintendo has already said that the 3DS will be released on February 26, 2011 in Japan (and in March elsewhere around the world), what could this mean? → Read More
Now available on an Xbox 360 console near you: Quake Arena Arcade. It looks to be a fairly straightforward port of Quake Live (which is to say, a fairly straightforward port of Quake III), but this time you’ll have to pay 1,200 Microsoft Points for the privilege. Then you have to convince yourself that playing the game with a console controller isn’t anything to be ashamed of—easier said then done. → Read More
Good Old Games is having itself a bit of a holiday sale (not that their prices aren’t already low!) that you’d be a fool to pass up. Highlights include Baldur’s Gate and Baldur’s Gate 2 for $6.99, Planescape: Torment for $6.99, Icewind Dale and Icewind Dale 2 for $6.99, Gothic and Gothic 2 for $6.99 each, and, to pick something that’s not an RPG, Duke Nukem 3D for $2.99. Why pay $60 for a four-hour campaign with today’s popamole nonsense when you buy literally hundreds of hours of gaming for a fraction of that? → Read More
Fact: if you install Gran Turismo 5 on your PS3′s hard drive you’ll speed up loading times. Additional fact: if you install Gran Turismo 5 on your PS3′s solid state drive (SSD) you’ll speed up loading times considerably. And yes, you can even try this at home—maybe! → Read More
World of Warcraft: Cataclysm has become the fastest selling PC game of all time. Blizzard sold 3.3 million copies in a mere 24 hours. Assuming everyone paid $40 for the game, that works out to $132 million in first-day sales alone. Not too shabby! → Read More
Raise your hand if you watched the Spike TV video game awards on Saturday. There were a few noteworthy developments to come out of the program, but the biggest feeling I got out of it was, man, this is not what I envision when I think about games. At one point, one of the guys on stage said something along the lines of, “Heh, my GamerTag is ChokeNutz.” A grown man actually said that! That’s not even detached-hipster funny. No, it’s simply trash-on-wheels. → Read More
A handy e-mail I just received has brought good news: Nintendo‘s Shigeru Miyamoto has been profiled in the New Yorker! About time the man has been honored with a sufficiently fancy interview from the sufficiently fancy magazine. → Read More
There’s two big stories coming out of November’s NPD numbers. The first is that Microsoft somehow managed to sell more Xbox 360s than Nintendo sold Wiis, with Microsoft selling 1.37 million to Nintendo’s 1.27 million. That’s probably the result of the Kinect. The second is that, yes, Call of Duty: Black Ops sold a whopping 8.4 million units. Good on Activision, swimming in piles of coin. → Read More
