Since its launch earlier this year, Gilt City has been a somewhat reluctant competitor to daily deal juggernaut Groupon. Although their business models overlap— with both offering local deals for a limited time— Gilt says it purposefully goes after a different demographic.
The whole “flash sale” phenomenon is interesting. Traditionally, the idea of “impulse buying” has been viewed as a somewhat bad thing. Deal hunters in San Francisco and Los Angeles have a new site to prowl starting today: Gilt City, the local deals arm of semi-exclusive “flash sale” site Gilt Groupe, has expanded to the west coast. Each city is currently offering three local deals, ranging from San Francisco’s Street Food Festival to a wardrobe makeover.
Gilt is closing in on Groupon’s turf. In April, Gilt quietly launched a beta version of “Gilt City,” a local deals service that offered a set of weekly deals for New York. Although City remains in beta mode and is only available to approximately one-third of Gilt’s NY membership, the well-funded company is preparing for an official launch in 15 to 20 U.S. markets.
