Google Buzz Could Have Dominated Location. (And Snuck Up On Facebook And Twitter.)
MG Siegler
Mar 8, 2010

Tomorrow it will be exactly one month since the launch of Google Buzz. The song remains the same: it’s a mess. Normally, that wouldn’t bother me so much — after all, a lot of services are a mess — but Buzz has a lot of potential. But again, it’s been a month. I’m starting to wonder if it will ever reach that potential. I’m also starting to wonder if it shouldn’t have been introduced as something entirely different.

Despite its many annoyances, I’ve been using Buzz regularly over the past month (Gmail integration tends to shove it in your face and I hate unread counts). The one thing I keep coming back to is that Buzz on the iPhone and Android is pretty impressive. Specifically, the location functionality as run through the mobile web is impressive. In fact, that’s what I think Buzz should have started out as.

Yes, I know Google already has a location-based service: Latitude. But let’s be honest: no one uses Latitude. Or if they do, they likely don’t even realize they’re using it because it’s just turned on in the background. And that’s precisely why Latitude doesn’t work.

The past several months have proven that consumer demand for location services is contingent on one thing: the ability to “check-in.” That is, rather than having a service that is always on in the background transmitting your location (like Latitude), people are actually using the services that allow you to dictate when and where your location is sent out (like Foursquare and Gowalla). There’s a reason that services like Loopt has pivoted from one method to the other.

Checking-in works for people because of two main things: simplicity (of the concept) and privacy. People prefer checking-in because it makes sense. You hit a button to say you’re somewhere, and it gets transmitted. You don’t have to worry about whether your mobile device is always transmitting because you’re in complete control of it. In the future, as people become more comfortable with the concept, I suspect some form of “always-on” location will become the norm, but for now, it’s baby-steps.

And that’s why Latitude, as it’s currently built, doesn’t work for most people. But Buzz — the mobile version, at least — is the location-based service that Google should have built. It has the idea of checking-in built into it; you simply do so by buzzing from your device. When you do that, Google offers you the opportunity to tag your buzz to a certain place and instantly send it out to your followers.

That’s another key to why Buzz (and check-in services as a whole) works as a location service: with it, Google finally understands that people don’t want to let others know their GPS coordinates. That means nothing to most people. Instead, Buzz lets you select an actual place (like a restaurant, for example), and send that out with your message.

People understand the concept of places, not coordinates. And Google, thanks to its Search and Maps businesses, happens to have databases of more places than probably any other company out there. With Buzz, they’re finally using it.

As a sharing service within Gmail, Buzz isn’t ready for primetime yet. As a location service, Buzz could have been a serious challenger to Foursquare, Gowalla, Brightkite, Loopt, and all the others preparing for big launches at SXSW later this week. Imagine Buzz as a location-based iPhone and Android app (or even just a web app). It still could have been linked to your Google Profile and perhaps would have even been a better gateway drug to making Google more social because it would have been a more gradual build-up.

And to ensure some usage beyond Google Profiles, Google could have put Buzz in Gmail Labs, as an option for Gmail. As a broken social sharing service, Buzz in Gmail is annoying. But as a location-based stream of check-ins (that people could still comment on and like), it’s potentially interesting. And it still would have been exposed to millions of potential users that way. And some users could have even used browser location features to use it within Gmail (Google Chrome is one of the browsers testing this natively).

Google could have kept the Buzz button on its mobile interface for easy check-in/update ability from all of its mobile apps. And Buzz built-in to the native Maps application on Android is simply brilliant.

As a location-based app, Google would have likely been instantaneously bigger than all of its rivals. This is the key reason people suggest that when Facebook enters the location game, it will wipe out the other players — it’s the huge built-in user base.

Then the next step could have been to more directly emphasize the concept of sharing. That would have been to opposite approach of Twitter, which first was all about sharing, and more recently has added the location layer (which Facebook is also likely to do at some point this year). But that makes sense for Google, since the social elements have been their weak point and no one yet has a huge stranglehold over the location space.

Instead, right now, Buzz is oddly split between this sharing service within Gmail and this location-based service that exists on the mobile web. They should have focused on the latter, used the location buzz (pun intended) at SXSW to take out their upstart rivals, and then morphed into a social sharing service down the road. Then they would have been well-positioned (and perhaps more importantly, better prepared) to take on the more established social sharing sites, Twitter and Facebook.

Oh well. Time to go mute some more posts on the Buzz we’re stuck with.

It’s getting to the point with API’s it won’t really matter what social media people use as they’ll never go to the actual web page, as long as we have startups like http://smi.sh/394ed hitting the desktop that do anything you can think of (including social media). Their the ones who have snuck up on everyone and no one even seen them coming. Cool article though.

  • My Locator ®

Where does the Google’s Search with “My Location” feature play into all of this? Is that dead and now called Nearby Now?

User programed niche “automatic” buzz feeds are the future of LBS. The check-in nonsense is a joke. Its just not practical.

Your complaining that Buzz is a mess after only one month? A little impatient, don’t ya think? Get over it. Twitter sucks anyways and Facebook is overrated.

  • Ben

So I don’t get it; you’re complaining about what Buzz DOESN’T do, by describing the features that it DOES have?

Aren’t you just contradicting yourself here?

  • Mike

How about any site where the founder is not using it to hack into your private email eh? I’ve long since disliked Facebook, its an unstable mess that is becoming more like MySpace every day. Their so called redesigns are nothing more but excuses to default your privacy settings to be wide open for them and their advertisers to exploit. And now that Zuckerman has been busted on using people’s private data for personal benefit… why would anyone still be on that site?

Twitter, plain and simple, is dumb and useless. People were not meant to communicate in 140 character bursts, unless you consider me posting about the shape of my corrent bowel movement as communication. And I’m sorry but I could hardly give a crap (wow two poop references back to back… go me) about what Aschton Kutcher is doing right this minute.

Buzz to put it simply is the single best way to converse and communicate that is currently available. It’s not something revolutionary or completely new. But what Google did was take the best of all these social networks, improved on EVERY aspect and released the superior (if not slightly buggy) communication tool. I’m not saying we should stop criticizing it. Thats how things improve and cater more to our needs. But at least give it credit where its due.

WRONG – I’ve FB’d, Friendfeeded, and twittered and I’d rather be at Buzz. You aren’t aware of what’s going on in the background. (Did you actually interview someone from Google about Buzz to write this “opinion” post?” There’s so much more on the horizon. They are allowing the early adopters help suggest the features they want and think will work well. And they will roll many of those out very soon, and when they are done right.

Google has had some failures, but don’t count them out.

When Gmail came out – most people hated it because of the threading – I think a lot of people (myself included), use gmail as our main email now.

When Chrome came out – I hated it because it was pretty darn annoying with the different UI. I’ve been using Chrome for a while now…..

I think Google thinks 10 steps ahead whereas most companies think 1 or 2 steps ahead…..so time will really tell if they’ve done it right or wrong.

  • holminid

Brightkite lets you set alarms for specific locations in case you or a friend arrives there. Jaiku originally allowed you to name base stations.

could we have that in Buzz?

  • http://www.ryanpollock.com Ryan Pollock

MG: the main reason manual check-ins have become reasonably popular is that automatic check-ins are impossible on iPhone. Apps can’t run in the background. Foursquare just happens to be the first location-sharing app that has 1) gotten a ton of support from the blogosphere, and 2) built a solid user experience around the manual check-in concept.

Yeah, Buzz is better than Pong, also, because in Buzz, you don’t just hit the little square ball back and forth. You make words and pictures and stuff.

Buzz is nowhere near as good as FriendFeed yet, but will be quite a bit better than FF by this time next year. I think there’s a good chance it will AOL-ify Facebook in the coming few years.

The problem with Google is that they want to show investors that they are run like a Corporate Company, but in reality they act like a garage start-up.

The launch of Buzz was a complete disaster. Perhaps Wave will go the same way.
Their problem is that they have so many new services scattered over the place without attaching it to any of their core brands.

Buzz completely sums up the current situation at Google. Noise overkill and sod the Privacy issues.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=679971481 Luis Abreu

I find it amazing people are willing to use Foursquare and Gowalla, you have to remember to launch the app, actually launch it, select the correct place you’re at, tap on check in. And what do you get? The same you get on Facebook, a useless piece of information.

Latitude is so much easier and rewarding, it’s always running in the background, you can even export a file with your location history, you get notified when people are near you, you can interact in several ways with people, like initiate a chat/sms/mms/call/email, get directions to meet that person, see what’s near that person, like restaurants and etc.

You also have total control over privacy, you choose when to update your location what level of information you want to share with each person.

I mean, it’s counter-intuitive that Foursquare and Gowalla/etc are as big as they are.

    Then again UI matters.

But I was hoping it would kill facebook with fire.

Am I the only one that is getting bored and tired of facebooks shenanigans?

    - Still no way to transfer ownership of Pages created in compliance with facebook’s policy.

    - Still no way to link photo albums between people, e.g., couples, with seperate accounts; who might just want to have seperate friends be able to access eachother’s albums.

    - Privacy settings are still a cluster-f’ – to put it nicely – of nested access settings that do not allow proper, simple control over what is shared.

    - Outside of the privilaged classes like TechCrunch staff, getting any kind of information, assistance, or even sign of life from Facebook is impossible.

I follow 155 people on Buzz compared to 345 on Twitter, but the noise level on Buzz is much, much higher. Hundreds of comments which basically either agree or disagree with the original posters, but add nothing news. Lots people who I don’t know who want to get into a dick-waving contest. Location functions which don’t map on to the discussion well, if at all.

Buzz is a mess, and should never have been launched in its current form.

Nothing against Google, but they are not creators, they are copiers. Nothing wrong with that, in fact the “copy/improve” strategy is a good one. Buy and/or copy enough of other people’s products and sometimes you get an AdWords.
