Launched in April 2009, Kickstarter is a crowdfunding platform founded by Perry Chen, Yancey Strickler and Charles Adler. Projects can use Kickstarter to collect money from the public, circumventing traditional avenues of investment. Project creators choose a deadline and minimum funding goal; if the goal isn’t met by the deadline, no funds are collected. Those who back Kickstarter projects are offered rewards for their pledges. Kickstarter takes 5 percent of the funds raised.
