Founded in 2006 by Dylan Smith and Aaron Levie, Box is an online file sharing and personal cloud content management service for businesses. Box enables users to determine how their content is shared with other users; they can also invite others to view and/or edit an account’s shared files, upload documents, and photos to a shared files folder, and give other users rights to view shared files.
Box operates on a freemium business model and provides up to 50GB of free storage for personal accounts. A mobile version of Box is also available for Android, BlackBerry, WebOS, iOS, and Windows Phone devices. In 2007, Box announced OpenBox, a service that connects Box with other web-based applications and services, including ThinkFree, Twitter, Zazzle, Autodesk, and others.
