Twitter awash with Nexus One owners claiming to have received Gingerbread

Now, this is firmly in the unconfirmed basket, as the only proof I’ve seen of an update reaching a Nexus one is the first part of a two-part upgrade, but some Twitter users are getting all a flutter, claiming that Android 2.3, aka Gingerbread, has arrived on their device.

Now, as I said before, the only updates I’ve seen have been the first of a two-stage update. And what’s crucial to recognise is that the second stage is Gingerbread; the first is just to prepare your device.

There is no telling how long a gap there will be between receiving the first update, and having Gingerbread pushed to your phone. For all we know, the second update may not arrive for another month.

If I hear of anyone receiving the crucial second-stage, I’ll let you know.

We’re patiently awaiting any official word of a Gingerbread release date from Google, and you can be sure that the moment we hear anything, we’ll post about it.

Update: Yup, that update looks to be just a bug fix, not Gingerbread.
Also, thanks to Varunkumar Nagarajan for confirming in the comments that it’s just Android 2.2.1 FRG83D, and not an update preparing the device for Gingerbread.
