Audi employs holographic sales rep

It’s not quite as exciting as you want it to be, but an Audi dealership in Sydney has added a hologram of sorts to its sales department. It’s not projected by a maintenance droid and it’s probably just a 2-minute loop, but it’s still kind of cool.

Here’s what they had to say about it:

The Holographic Virtual Assistant comes in the form of a lifesize, virtual installation with the holographic effect created using 3M’s dynamic Vikuiti rear projection film and rear mounted video projector technology. With the unique characteristics of the Vikuiti film and PDM’s expert digital content capabilities, PDM have transformed a 10 mm thick piece of perspex into a virtual, talking person.

So they’re projecting the 3D image on to a thin plane of plastic and it appears 3D to the viewer, if I understand correctly. Chances are it cost them about as much as an actual person’s salary, but then again, a hologram won’t bend under hard bargaining.
