(me) That’s why developers crank out killer mods like these two. Over at TIGSource they’ve been running a “Bootleg Demakes” competition that I’ve been following, in which developers are to take a modern game and “demake” it into something old-school and awesome, kind of the opposite of what developers tend to do today. Here’s one standout (and complete) entry, Gang Garrison 2 — obviously based on TF2, but featuring the kind of great side-scroller multiplayer gameplay you might find in Soldat. A lot of Xbox 360 owners have been pining over the lack of updates for Team Fortress 2 while PC owners have received them frequently and Kotaku is reporting that the wait is over. We’ll have to fork over a chunk of dough, but we’ll be munching on sandviches and the like shortly. Valve’s marketing director Doug Lombardi divulged that Valve didn’t want to push out meager updates if they were going to have to charge for them, so they’re rolling out a ginormous update for about $10. That’s what they’re aiming for, at least. No word on updates for PS3 owners, though. → Read More

Yes, it’s that time again. The Heavy update will be dropping a bunch of maps, unlockable weapons, and achievements, just like the Pyro and Medic updates before it. So! You can check out the mystery achievements here, but as I found out, the achievement image files are named according to the achievement’s requirements — “tf_heavy_kill_scouts.png” and so on. You’re probably already in the know about this, but the big Pyro pack has arrived along with his/her achievements and unlockable weapons. The full update info is here, including this little gem: Removed Soldier’s 40% damage reduction from his own rockets. Does not affect rocket jumps Thank you Jesus. I look forward to a rash of self-destroying soldiers. Also, in case you haven’t tried this excellent game, you can download it for free this weekend (starts Friday) and play as much as you want.
