Tweetie Two For Mac Approaches (Picture)

Last October, developer Loren Brichter set the App Store on fire with the sequel to his brilliant iPhone Twitter client, Tweetie. It looks like he’s about to do the same to the Mac.

Brichter sent out a series of teasing tweets today indicating that Tweetie Two is coming soon for the Mac. One, from his atebits account, reads:

Ready… ready?! News about Tweetie Tw… ROOOOOAAAAR!! NOOOO DON’T EAT M *BLAM BLAM*. *CHOMMMPP* Aaaaararrrrrgghhhhhh.

While clearly he’s about to say “News about Tweetie Two,” that in and of itself isn’t very useful. The more useful tweet comes from his personal Twitter account, where he links to a “leaked” screenshot, “Shhh, @atebits doesn’t know I’m leaking screenshots.” To which he replies to himself, “Damn you @lorenb!” Cute.

Better is the screenshot itself (below). While it doesn’t show much of anything beyond what seems to be a frame for Tweetie Two (which he humorously calls “Tweetie Too”) — or just an awful-looking joke — the fact that work is far enough along to for him to feel comfortable talking about it at all is a good sign.

Brichter released Tweetie for Mac last April, following the success of Tweetie (the first one) for the iPhone. It costs you $20 for the ad-free version, but it is well worth it if you’re addicted to Twitter want want a native, non-AIR app (though Echofon has a nice one as well).

So what else do we know about Tweetie Two for the Mac? Brichter actually set up a Formspring.me account where he has answered some questions himself. Notably, the pricing for Tweetie Two will be the same as the first one. Brichter basically spends all his time on the project. And he even designs it himself. Also, “The interface is going to be substantially different,” he writes.

Finally, when asked if he plans to develop for the upcoming iPad, Brichter has just two words, “Hell yeah.” Tweetie for iPad, anyone?

Update: Brichter emailed us to say that the tweets were “Just having some fun (have been so busy that I haven’t had much time to tweet recently).

He also notes that there’s some interesting news involving Tweetie tomorrow at MacHeist. Judging from the page, it looks like Tweetie 2 could be added to the nanoBundle 2, a collection of excellent Mac apps for just $19.95.

About damn time. Those of us that bought Tweetie 1 were beginning to feel a little left behind, especially with all of the new features that Twitter has implemented since Tweeties incarnation.

Tweetie is my favourite twitter client, both on the mac and iPhone. It’s nice to see that atebits still care about mac version. I’m waiting for updates on this. thank you

This is a non-story, my friends. And look at that UI, my dog could eat a hard drive and make something better.

That Loren fellow really ought to have taken the money and retired to a beach somewhere.

Seriously… Just want a working version that’s the same but better and more updated. Don’t care much for the marketing/hype stuff.

It might also be worth noting that there is a Tweetie logo hiding in the Macheist front page. Go to macheist.com and look to the right of RapidWeaver. Hoping Tweetie 2 might come as part of the nanobundle at the last minute.

The angel disappeared and the boy became a dragonfly at the same time.

I don’t really get Tweetie. Really. I recently downgraded from Tweetie 2 (iPhone) to the old Tweetie and it works so much better. The old version loads faster and remembers the state of my replies, unlike the new Tweetie.

I also don’t see much advantage (except karma, okay) to paying for the desktop version. Now if Tweetie Desktop would sync with Tweetie iPhone I would pay. Or if I could set-up my own Source parameter so it wouldn’t say “Tweetie” but something else.

Either way, I think there is a LOT more potential for this app and while it is the only Twitter client I use I think it could use a more critical review than this.

“Last October, developer Loren Brichter set the App Store on fire with the sequel to his brilliant iPhone Twitter client, Tweetie. It looks like he’s about to do the same to the Mac.”

It’s openers like this which make me lose all trust in sites like Techcrunch. Simply put, that reads like a paid for advertisement. And it’s not as if this is anything new, you’ve been at this when it comes to Tweetie since day one.

Tweetie is a good Twitter client but if I didn’t know any better, and relied upon the likes of Techcrunch for guidance, I’d be inclined to think this app is absurdly ahead of the competition. It isn’t and for many users it lags behind the work of other developers who don’t have Techcrunch shilling for them at every opportunity.

Tweetie 2 sits on about page nine of my iPhone screen. It’s not rubbish but quite frankly despite many efforts to make it my primary Twitter app I’ve failed. In other words I drank your cool aid but it had no effect.

Twittelator Pro sits on Page 1 still, just atop of MailApp. It remains there because, among other things, its hashtag support is excellent (Tweetie’s is so lame it doesn’t even pass the laughter test) and because I can access my drafts from within the compose window with a single tap (Tweetie makes you do this absurd and stupid round trip to get to drafts). Those are just two of the many reasons Tweetie remains only a back-up Twitter client for me.

Other people will have legitimate reasons for preferring Tweetie, in its favour its handling of DMs is excellent, and that’s fine but Techcrunch isn’t doing anyone any favours by its relentless promotion of Tweetie and its creator Mr. Brichter. There’s a vibrant ecosystem of excellent work being done and it deserves to be assessed by sites such as Techcrunch dispassionately and with intelligence. All this fanboyism for Tweetie really sucks the oxygen out of the space and really is a disservice to your readers, to yourselves and to other developers.

If you go to the MacHeist page right now, the Tweetie logo can partially be seen to the left as a teaser.

  • Adam

MacHeist just added Tweetie (1) to the nanoBundle.

    And pre-public beta access.
