Here’s my advice: watch the following trailer then close your Web browser because the Internet won’t get any better today. It’s the debut trailer for Little Big Planet 2. → Read More
If Sony’s talk of exclusive PlayStation games got you all hot and bothered yesterday, you might be happy to find out that one of those exclusives, LittleBigPlanet, is selling for a measly $30. → Read More
Let me save you the trouble of reading more than 1,000 words regarding the removal of that offensive-to-Muslims song in LittleBigPlanet. It’s a thorough report, sure, but my goodness, this isn’t exactly affairs of state or anything. • Using Koranic words is not forbidden in Islam • The singer uses the words to “attract and inspire people toward Islam,” not to freak people out That’s it. Now, if you’re in the mood to read an inordinate amount of hemming and hawing from Islam experts, be my guest. But the gist of it is, no, the song lyrics aren’t expressly forbidden by the religion and Sony was merely covering its ass lest it possibly offend a handful of people. → Read More
LittleBigPlanet has been delayed by about a week over concerns that it may offend Muslims. The game, which was supposed to ship today, was found to have a song that contains phrases from the Koran. As such, Sony has pushed back the game’s release to October 29. The offending phrases were found by a Muslim gamer who was playing the beta. The singer of the song, “Tapha Niang,” is Toumani Diabaté. The video here shows the level in question, complete with offensive song. We show it here not to shock or titillate, but because we know you’re smart enough to go to YouTube within three songs of finding out the name of the song. Sorta reminds me of when Nintendo had to recall The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time because the chanting in the Fire Temple sounded like a Muslim prayer chant. Let’s try to be civil about this: if it offends someone, fine. Take the week to tweak the code and then we avoid any further headaches. And now I’m downloading a bunch of Diabaté’s albums. Not bad at all. → Read More
Provided you can ignore the discomforting sing-along soundtrack that kicks in around 29 seconds, this video is more than capable of eating up a few minutes of your day. It shows Mario (then many Marios) being controlled by some sort of hand movement recognition technology. Think Sony EyeToy, but, somehow, more gimmicky. Wow that reminds me of LittleBigPlanet, a game I’m actually looking forward to. I like whimsy. 100 Marios, All Hand Controlled [Kotaku] → Read More
Sony is looking to compete with both Nintendo’s Mii Channel and Second Life it seems. Phil Harrison today announced the Playstation Home, where you can interact with other PS3 users, buy virtual furniture and clothing, and show off in-game trophies. Sounds a little bit like part Animal Crossing mixed with Second Life rather than a copycat version of Nintendo’s Mii. There’s also a way for you to create your own games with a service called LittleBigPlanet that’ll be coming out around the same time as Playstation Home. This is what Sony really needs to push the PS3 into the hands of many and to make it a more welcome console in the gaming world.
