Health Sensors Are Everywhere: Up Close With Striiv And Fitbit

This was the year of the sensors. From Fitbit’s new Aria Wi-Fi scale to the Basis sports watch, I saw more devices to keep you healthy and lean than ever.

I sat down with the folks from Fitbit and Striiv who both saw the power of self-reporting and mindfulness when it comes to weight loss. Striiv, for example, has a new feature that allows you to connect to your friends wirelessly to compete in contests like walkathons and races. For example, you and the wife can compete to get to 5,000 steps first during the day and the winner has to do chores or gets some of the losers “energy.”

Striiv Fitness Gadget Puts Personalized Challenges On The Menu

    Striiv

With the New Year already underway, I’m sure many of you are working hard to lose the holiday weight or are otherwise engaged in some hard-core New Years Resolution-style dieting. It’s that time of year, which is likely why Striiv is making a push to add new features.

Many of you may remember Striiv from our earlier coverage, in which we decided that the little pocket-sized pedometer is “fun, cute, and entertaining.” That’s because it basically turns your everyday work-out routine into a game. Along with tracking all of your various stats (steps taken, stairs climbed, etc.), it also lets you “donate” steps to certain charity organizations. There’s also a game called Myland, in which you can buy and plant trees in various territories from the gold you collected from walking. → Read More

Fly Or Die: The Striiv Fitness Device

What are your goals? To walk the length of the Golden Gate bridge? To run a 5K? To plant a tree in a magical forest? The Striiv lets you do all of those things and more. This wee device is a fairly basic pedometer that measures your steps as well as flights of stairs taken during the day. However, there’s a bonus – it has a nice, bright LCD touchscreen to display your current steps as well as other information like “badges” you’ve won for walking certain distances. The cherry on top? There’s a goofy little game that you can play, selling your “steps” for magical trees in a some kind of weird Farm-ville Hobbit world. → Read More

    Striiv Gamifies The Pedometer Craze

    scaledwm.IMG_3435

The pedometer – those little things you wear to measure your steps – has always been a weight loss gimmick. Only recently, however, have pedometers gotten smart enough to do more than just vaguely shame us into walking a little further. Take Striiv, for example. This keychain-sized device measures steps walked and stairs climbed and includes a unique set of cute little games that should, in theory, get you off your bum.

Like the FitBit, Striiv senses strides and stair climbs from the comfort of your pocket. It has a small LCD screen and lasts one week on one charge, making it quite Tamagotchi-like in its size and interface. To use it you just slip it into your pocket and it gives you goofy little badges (“Good start” for your first 150 steps, “Average Day” for 4900 steps, the average number of steps an American takes each day) and you can track your daily stats.

Striiv Launches Portable Health Device That Blends Fitness With Gaming

    Striiv

Striiv is launching a new device today that blends gaming, fitness, and more. The device itself is a little larger than an Apple Nano, and includes a high-resolution color screen. Striiv acts partly as a pedometer to track your activity and also allows you to play games, and use your activity to donate to charities.

The device, which you can attach to a keychain or to a belt, tracks simple daily interactions like walking, taking the stairs, or exercise, and each activity earns, tracks and transforms your activities into games and donations. With Striiv every step counts toward a donation to charity. At launch, Striiv is partnering with GlobalGiving to donate clean water to children in South America or a polio vaccine to a child in India. → Read More
