Canon 5D mark II exhibits "jello effect," not as bad as D90

http://vimeo.com/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=1815853&server=vimeo.com&show_title=1&show_byline=1&show_portrait=0&color=00ADEF&fullscreen=1 Looks like the 5D mk II isn’t immune to the skew produced by a rolling shutter, although it performs better than the D90 for sure — and I’m sure a careful shooter can produce some very impressive footage with either one. Although you mainly notice it in the video above when abnormal shaking movements are made, that kind of issue can really mess with the natural look of a medium-speed pan — say, tracking a car passing the camera. Another problem occurs in flickery light, for instance some fluorescents, which may be lighter or darker in certain parts of the frame due to interference between the light’s “frequency” and the camera’s electronic shutter speed. Oh well, the camera’s still sweet as hell. [Thanks for the tip, Mike, and tell me if I'm getting it wrong] → Read More

Canon 5D Mark II rumors are swirling, swirling

Oh man, if only I were very, very rich. To have a full-frame professional SLR, the joy! So it looks like the upcoming 5D Mk II is going to be an interesting camera. Its detail retention at 12800 ISO is supposed to be equal to the previous 5D’s at 3200, which is fantastic and represents nearly a 2-stop advantage. This means sharper, clearer pictures at higher shutter speeds in lower light — the holy grail of sports and nature photographers. This is possible because the Mk II is rumored to use a next generation CMOS with “vastly improved” light-gathering capability and signal/noise ratio. It will also have a new version of the Digic III image processor. It’s supposed to be announced on April 22 and be available in early June for ~$3500. Rumor: Canon 5D Mark II at PMA?

Some slightly shady sources have suggested that Canon will be rolling out the 5D Mark II soon, possibly at the PMA convention in a couple weeks. If only I could have stayed in Vegas! AVN then PMA! There’s nothing solid, but some unnamed Canon reps seem to think we’ll be getting a couple surprises at the show, which hopefully will include the long-awaited update to their pro-level full-frame DSLR. Canon 5D Mark II immenent, prepare laser cannons

Ho ho ho! All of you folks looking for the 5D Mark II might be pleasantly surprised to find out that Capture One added the camera to their website’s error reporting page, suggesting that someone had lunch with someone at Canon maybe like last week and that someone heard that other someone say “Yeah, don’t put the 5D Mark II on your site yet, dude. God. The waitress is smokin’” and the person from Capture One forgot to tell the web designer who was working from maybe Canon’s spring catalog and who just added the 5D Mark II and the guy who had lunch with the Canon guy is right now peeing himself and will yell at and fire the web designer later today, just in time for the holidays. The web designer, in turn, will go home and tell his/her sig. other that he/she’s been fired and there will be this quiet moment before the sig. other says “That job sucked anyway. [Guy who went to lunch with Canon guy] is a [flaming douche, or whatever gentle thing a woman might say in this situation, maybe like 'jerk']” and then guy at Capture One will stare idly out the window until 5 o’clock and go home, just like he does every day, and masturbate and eat frozen burritos.
