Foursquare’s New Site Design Starts To Roll Live As Gossip Girl Pays Homage — Well, Maybe
MG Siegler
Mar 9, 2010

Since its launch almost exactly a year ago, Foursquare’s website has largely had the same basic design. Tonight, it looks like that’s finally getting updated.

While it looks like the update is still in the process of rolling out to all the pages, Foursquare.com now clearly has new system-wide toolbars, a brand new sign-up page, as well as some new settings. You might also notice a new, name-only logo.

While it’s been clear for a while that Foursquare has been working on a site redesign, only in the past few days have signs started to show that it was coming. For example, a completely revamped History area showed up a few days ago, one allowing for venues to have categories as well as show which friends you checked-in with at places.

The biggest part of the changes currently rolling out is to the sign-up page. The new step-by-step process looks highly influenced by Twitter’s sign-up page (which they too tweaked a few times over the years). The process now allows you to sign up, easily find friends already using Foursquare via Twitter or Facebook Connect, as well as link up to those aforementioned networks. After you do that, there’s a one-page rundown of what you can do with Foursquare (such as download one of the mobile apps, earn badges, and explore cities).

These sign-up pages are important for convincing new users to not only sign up, but also showing them what to do. With Foursquare signing mainstream deals left and right, they’re going to need this.

Something else that appears to be new: an option in the setting page for  letting local businesses see that you have checked-in at their venue. When you click the link to learn more, it says:

We allow verified venue owners to see statistics about checkins at their venue. These stats include recent visitors, most frequent visitors and most popular checkin times. You can always opt out if you’d rather not share this data with the venues you visit.

Sadly, with the redesign, there is still no way to check-in from the site itself. You have to use one of the app, the mobile web, or text messaging to do that.

Speaking of mobile apps, Foursquare is about to launch a completely redesigned iPhone app as well. All of these moves are necessary if Foursquare is going to keep up with its better-designed rival, Gowalla (which also just revamped its website).

Something else interesting from tonight: apparently the concept of “checking-in” made its onscreen debut on the popular TV show Gossip Girl. Co-founder Dennis Crowley noted the move and tweeted out a picture of it captured from the show. While there is no specific mention of Foursquare, it seems obvious (at least to Crowley) what they’re paying homage to. And Foursquare actually has paid homage the other way, with its “Gossip Girl” badge.

The move towards the mainstream continues — or maybe Elizabeth Fisher was just actually checking-in to that hotel. Hard to know for sure.

OMFG, 4 posts in the last 11 about Foursquare, 3 by MG?

Anyone know Elisabeth Fisher’s address? Might pay her (house) a visit.

I should have said 4 posts in the last 2 days.

Can’t buy that kind of coverage. Complete abuse of power by Techcrunch seeing if they can make or break a(nother) service.

    My first post on Techcrunch!

A big fan of techcrunch, I have been reading you (from France) for the past 2 years, and I have got to admit that I find it starnge that M. MG is constantly writting about foursquare (do you thing it is the next google?). From my point of view, it seems that you are providing a lot of help for this startup, and the other companies competing in the same area should be “jealous” of such publicity…don’t you think?

  • David

I’d be all over Gowalla if I could check-in via SMS.

  • az1324

Obvious? Oh right because before Foursquare no one ever “checked in” at hotels…

  • Ryan

    New man crush eh Siegler?

  • Joris

Hmm, as of today I also see the new design. But what’s missing is the page with my checkin history, which was introduced only 2 days ago. Anyone else notices this?

  • Mitch

Worthless fanboy drivel. What qualifies this as newsworthy? Arrington, is this blog about tech companies and news or is it a place for mg to ramble on about whatever he’s obsessed with? Can’t you see your readers are getting fed up with extended articles about MG’s pet companies that waste space your high profile blog and make a mockery of the companies you should be writing about? I bet 100 more popular and more innovative sites have undergone redesigns in the last week but all you guys care about is foursquare and Twitter. Christ. If this blog weren’t so damn important I’d delete it from my readers.

Heh, just posted about it now. I watched the ep, and it has nothing to do with Foursquare -_-

These promotional plugs for Foursquare are getting desperate.

Later on today, there will be another Foursquare piece asking Techcrunch readers ‘what do you think about this new Foursquare service?’ – and using our comments like a Foursquare Focus Group.

  • http://www.facerugby.com Ludo Trichet

    I agree 100 % with your comment.
How much is it worth for a company like Foursquare to have such publicity on TC. Personnally, I would be ready to give up 5% to 10% share of my company (to MG) if he could get me the same amount of free advertising ??? Out of the 500K members on Foursquare how many are sponsored by TC?

Gowalla and Pegshot are more fun to me now. Design is important to me as well as the geotag. I like being able to add a picture to where I am at times. I use Foursquare last on the list nowadays.

Seems like MG got a MacBook Air from Foursquare

We’re working on a site redesign at the minute. I can’t offer you macbook though. Maybe a Chapstick, or this roll of selotape I have on my desk.

    how much does it cost?

The Gossip Girl thing had nothing implicitly or explicitly to do with Foursquare. Yes, that screenshot is from last night’s episode but, like most things, context is key. Chuck was searching for a woman named Elizabeth Fisher (who may or may not be his mother but I guess that’s irrelevant to this point). For weeks he’s had a private investigator looking for her and the investigator texted him what you see above. The meaning was literal: the woman had checked into the hotel. It had nothing to do with checking in ala Foursquare and I would argue that the supposition that it’s a reference to Foursquare is a big reach.

“The move towards the mainstream continues — or maybe Elizabeth Fisher was just actually checking-in to that hotel. Hard to know for sure.” Sure, the move towards mainstream may be continuing but this isn’t quite an example of it. Not hard to know for sure. Just ask someone who watched (and knew what they were talking about) or seek out the clip yourself.

  • anon

Dennis Crowly just unlocked the super-douchebag badge. Sorry bud, but “checking in” was a verb long before your stupid web app. What an egotistical ass.

  • igniman

Please let us know when it finishes rolling out

  • Frustrated European Entrepreneur

I’m seriously impressed (and scared) about the “FourCrunch” coverage of these days.

4 out of 11 latest posts are about Foursquare.
TechCrunch write about it even if they change a page color…
This is not more about like or dislike, this is all about competitiveness and trust.

Foursquare will succeed just thank to TechCrunch writers. Or maybe not, cause despite the impressive coverage they are still low traction (+/- 450k users). Do they deserve this media exposure? My guess, no.

MG I am with you on the Foursquare – there is a reason to cover it – it is the one to watch. I was wondering if in an upcoming post on Foursquare can you spend a bit of time talking to what problem it solves for people? I feel like one thing it does is it touches on the need that some have to feel like they are a patron or a regular at a place – but that is only my take. It would be interesting to see what people get out of it.

  • http://heylovedc.tumblr.com @heylovedc

I just want to know how to get the Gossip Girl badge :p

As for the reference on Gossip Girl – I saw it and didn’t think of Foursquare. It just looked like a text from this Andrew guy saying Elizabeth literally checked into the hotel.

  • http://www.breadmarket.co.uk mark

People used to complain about MG posting too much about Twitter. Give the man a break, he’s moving on to the next hot product!

  • Sick of Fourcrunch

    That’s extremely lame.
Is there maybe some service which can take Techcrunch’s RSS feed and filter out MG siegler posts?

  • igniman

Some time the advertising money will run out.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=16800411 Corey Alexander O

wow….total fail. everyone checks into hotels. also, gossip girl already paid homage to loopt in last season. jesus, silicon valley is in a mental bubble.

  • jay

sigh. too much false marketing. the message in gossip girl was a text from Chuck’s PI that the lady he was tracking just checked into a hotel. Read: old school checking in.

  • Nam

seriously, a UI update is TC worthy?

i’m guessing foursquare rather has the best PR lead on the planet or someone at TC just received some advisory stock – either way, congrats!

  • Kyle

Dude, the Gossip Girl homage is obviously a text from someone telling another person they saw someone “check in” to a hotel. You know, like people have done for decades. But this just reveals the sort of people who like Foursquare are the same people who watch Gossip Girl ironically.

  • Brad

I’m pretty sure that screen shot that “pays homage” to Foursquare is just a text from Andrew Tyler – who I believe is a private investigator. Not exactly 2010 technology.

Yes, I watch Gossip Girl, and no, I’m not ashamed of it.

  • Brad

Missed your comment…looks like you beat me to it.

  • jimjerky

    it is getting silly MG

  • youngluck

Foursquare is not as hot as MG would have you believe. Step outside the TC Zone and you’ll realize Brightkite has 4 times the users and .00000001% of the Crunch coverage. And no, MG. Gossip Girl doesn’t give a sh*t about Foursquare.

  • fourcrunch

MG, journalistic integrity in question. I think you have crossed the line here. Anywhere else, your ass will be fired.

Techcrunch is almost becoming the fox news of tech blogs – Losing its integrity and value to it’s readers. And having biased opinions…

I guarantee a challenger in this space soon…

While it is fair to question why so much is written about foursquare in particular, location-based services would certainly seem to be an area of strong potential growth. In that respect, perhaps foursquare and gowalla are like Gerstner’s “fireflies before the storm”, and thus well worth some level of coverage.

  • keane

FS may appear to be redundant on TC, but hey if you have used it the right way, its pretty cool.

So neither TechCrunch nor BusinessInsider bothered to check the validity of this Foursquare shout out. Is it really that popular?

As others have mentioned above, the text message was from a private investigator reporting on a woman who actually checked out of a hotel and into a new one. Plus this show uses hotels a lot, Chuck Bass being an owner himself.

Gossip Girl loves using technology but you caught the wrong Easter egg. And this was a far more compelling article.
