Overheard: Steve Jobs Says Apple Tablet "Will Be The Most Important Thing I've Ever Done."
Michael Arrington
Jan 24, 2010

“This will be the most important thing I’ve ever done”Steve Jobs, referring to the soon-to-be-launched Apple Tablet.

We haven’t heard this first hand, but we’ve heard it multiple times second and third hand from completely independent sources. Senior Apple execs and friends of Jobs are telling people that he’s about as excited about the upcoming Apple Tablet as he’s ever been. Coming from the man who has created so much, that’s saying something.

If Steve Jobs thinks the iPhone was just a warm up act to this device, I can’t wait to see what it can do. As if our expectations weren’t already set high enough. We’ll all know a lot more this Wednesday.

Seriously, I think the internet has set a new high-water mark for hype. How the heck is Apple going to live up to it on Wednesday?

If this is true it totally makes sense. He tried before and failed. Now he has everything to change the world and history as we know it. Not by only introducing the Apple tablet but initiating a new wave of cheaper and simpler devices yet very capable and interconnected.

I don’t see how it could have more of an impact than the iPod had on MP3 players and the iPhone had on the smartphone market, but I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

    IPhone

We know it is not Atom based. It is probably ARM based. Tegra2 or Samsung or maybe Qualcomm snapdragon?

In other words, it is under powered by a factor of 2 even compared to the Joojoo.

Software wise, it is a glorified ipod touch with bigger screen, more gesture support.

Knowing Steve, he probably will try to tag on a 3G data plan to go with it. Sell some ebooks.

What else does it have that others can’t do?

Interesting. Is this true or just marketing strategy?

  • cheryl

I’m leaning toward thinking that Jobs did not say that…. if he did say that, though–what about interpreting ‘important’ in another way?

My favorite speculation so far was this – http://tinycomb.com/2010/01/09/breaking-apples-tablet-is-for-the-healthcare-industry/
One reader pointed out that pretty much all the software programs in the health care industry run on Windows. But if this somehow ran through…Parallels? or were a good enough product to push the health care industry to switch over to Mac–it would be huge for mac in terms of lassoing a new industry, and it would be ‘important’ in that the switch to electronic records, not to mention, the ability to SYNC chart notes, could potentially save a lot of lives.

John Tantillo did a post a while ago naming Apple the brand winner for all the buzz the Tablet was generating…even though we don’t really know what it is… chalking it up to Apple’s fabulous record for innovation and bringing customers products they really want. http://blog.marketingdoctor.tv/2010/01/05/john-tantillos-winner-and-loser-of-the-week-apple-again-slate-and-the-administration–terrorism.aspx

With this rumor of J the Apple before that?

Come on, this guy probably wakes up in the morning, takes a shit, and spends a couple hours talking about how that shit revolutionized shit as we know it, and set a new level for shits everywhere.

  • http://www.rogerkermode.com Roger Kermode

Microsoft’s efforts in the tablet space to date have shown that a tablet alone is not enough.

What’s the bet we see something more than a tablet launched?

How about a integrated offering of
    the tablet
+ a refresh of the appleTV with say at least a 1TB drive
+ iTunes with one or more related content services for books, movies, and apps
+ having the whole thing work seamlessly with other tablets, iPhones, and iPod touches.

The existence of such an ecosystem would give Apple a huge lead in the home space and enable a whole heap of new entertainment options. …

  • Adam

Prediction – it will be really expensive.

Something like $500-$1,000 + data contract at $40/month.

No one will be happy. Only early adopters and apple lovers will be the first to own.

Later the price will come down.

Same playbook as iPhone…except with Verizon AND AT&T this time!0

Remember the hype around “IT / Ginger” you know the Segway, this is also reaching absurd proportions. In this case we all know the range of possibilities and can hazard a guess about functionality, performance and price. There is nothing that I have read that would lead me to conclude this is a major technology breakthrough that can live up to the hype. There is a huge number of other exceptional technology innovators out there and no one has hinted or shown as a prototype a possible device that will redefine the industry. What a huge letdown it will be if Apple does not blow everyone away on the 27th. The I-pod with its form factor and functionality was a huge product, a better Kindle or Netbook at Apples prices– the Jet’s already broke my heart.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ed_Borasky/1011220460 Ed Borasky

Yes, it will need to deliver *real* concrete *business* value. It can’t be a “big iPhone” or a “touch-screen MacBook”. *Business* is about getting shit done. If you can’t get shit done on an “Apple Tablet”, the competition is ready and will crush it like a bug.

Cool isn’t enough. What success the iPhone has had is because it was a better phone, not because it was “cool”.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people//690068237 fb690068237

Why does Steve Jobs think this will be his most important accomplishment?

I think the iPad will be incredibly cheap (by Apple standards) with the goal of making computers available to the very poor. His experience with the iPod and then the iPhone have demonstrated a willingness to go away from premium pricing.

I worked for Dynamac in the late 1980s, the very first manufacturer of portable Apple computers, and I’ve been pretty on-target on most Apple predictions for two decades now. Here’s my post from July 2008, where I predict the name, architecture, pricing, etc:

I’ve been following Apple for a good 15 years and I’ve never seen this kind of hype. Apple is obviously aware of the expectations and if they felt these were entirely overblown, I’m sure they would have sent out hints to lower the inferno just a tad. Or maybe I’m wrong, this is Steve Jobs we’re talking about.

I admit the iPod made a huge wave on the industry, but i also believe that the tablet could make as big of an impact.

As Graham said, this device could completely revolutionise the print industry, e-books, books, magazines, newspapers, ALL of this could be complete history if the Apple Tablet is a success.

Graham also pointed out the gaming industry. The iPhone has already started making a dent in the gaming industry, but if this tablet is what everybody is expecting, it could change the industry. It would pretty much wipe-out most hand-held gaming devices, and finish off what the iPhone started.

Im sure the print and gaming industry are quivering in their boots right now. They need to hurry the hell up and jump on the Apple bandwagon, or face their business going downhill, and fast.

    Looking forward to Wednesday. :)

Apple tablet won’t be cheap as all Apple products but for what it will offer it will be considered cheap. Plus it will create a whole new market segment, a very important one mind you.

Tablets are more user friendly, less complicated to use. No keyboards, no mouse, no power supply etc. Think millions of people having a tablet (Apple or not) as their first computer.

This is a big deal for apple, I’ll tell you why.

Apple desperately needs to come up with a new iphone-like cash-cow. Sure, at the moment, apple has lots of money in bank and many investors. Yet the trends and realities of apple’s finances ae following:

    - Amazingly apple sold 40 million iphones and made $500 profit on each of those in average ($700 revenue per iphone with subsidy and exclusivity contracts). Yet sales of the iphone are slowing. All apple fanboys who could afford it bought one already and ar unlikely to buy a new one. And $200 unlocked Androd phones are coming, making sale of $700 iphones impossible.

    - $300 average ipod touch is now actually becomming more popular, lowers apples revenue per fanboy.

    - iphone/ipod touch represent mor than half of apples revenues and profits. And revenue per iphone has been demonstrated to quickly be lowered.

Nice theories but that all depends on whether they don’t update the iPhone. I and a lot of folk around me are currently on their third iPhone. The recurring revenue thing is a big deal and I’m sure Apple has plans there and it’s been a long time since they really put a foot wrong.

(The last time was when they ran with iMovie and iDVD when the world wanted iTunes and CDRW. And look how they spun that one!)

I reckon Apple is dealing with the inevitable reduction in revenues (from the expiring carrier relationships) by launching a new hardware product line. You also have to consider that subsidised iPhones are not going away and a lot of people are going to buy them. Yes, GROWTH is slowing but the numbers that are being sold daily is actually increasing and when OS4 and iPhone v4 are release, we’ll see another sales spike.

Am I looking forward to the iSlabletPad? Yup. Will I buy one? Yup. But then you knew that.

  • Ryan Germann

The iPhone and iPod (touch) are basically the same device… if the iPad is also based on this UI paradigm, it will be a success, no doubt… but I can’t imagine a huge number of people paying upwards of $800 for his unless its got a 1080p OLED screen capable of showing streamed high-def movies over wireless broadband (without a huge monthly fee) as well as acting like a full tablet-style computing device.

Maybe it will do all that at a reasonable price, but if I’ve learned anything about consumer electronics from Apple, it’s “don’t blow your wad all at once”. They will release a device that impresses compared to other devices, but I’d rather that quote direct from Steve, rather than “overheard” by an overzealous marketing guy who wants to stir the pot a bit.

I think Apple’s tablet will be the first device to commercialize gesture based computing (the Wii kind of did this but you need a controller). The tablet will see your gestures with a camera mounted on it – similar to Microsoft’s Project Natal.

With each new device Apple creates a new way to interact with it. The ipod has the click-wheel, the iphone has multi-touch, but gesture based computing is the future. Just wave your hand in front of the tablet and the page of the magazine will turn. I think Apple has something big like this up its sleeve.

    This is my speculation:

I believe that Wednesday’s unveiling will have more to do with the new media delivery services that Apple will provide rather than just the tablet itself. It will be combining all the different media outlets and its different mediums and centralizing it all with iTunes that is going to be more revolutionizing. Apple will no longer be just a software nor hardware company but will now be a media distribution company as well.

Think about it. Apple has revolutionized the delivery system and marketplace of music, movies, audiobooks, applications, etc. and is now going to be adding ebooks (which will probably include digital magazines, newspapers etc.) to its line. But that’s not all, with apple’s talks with big television networks we will more than likely see paid live television subscriptions to go along with it.

What this means and why it is a big deal? Think about the big companies that this will eliminate and the costs customers will save. With the iPhone we will soon be able to VOIP our calls without having to pay for cellphone services (bye bye Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile) but just data wiimax companies like Clear using Apps like Google Voice and SKYPE. With Apple TV and live TV subscriptions we can say goodbye to Cable and Sat TV companies and watch our TV anywhere too with iPhone, iPad, or Macbook. Our on demand ability with iTunes for movies and TV shows will eliminate the need for Netflix, Redbox or even TiVo for that matter. With eBooks and mag subscriptions you will see a new outlet for receiving magazines, books, and newspapers… in color. Now that Apple has seen the acceptance of e-readers it knows that it is time to move on it. And what about the App store? With its popularity and ease of use why should we not expect to see its implementation into Apple’s computer operating systems too?

Here are the industries and services that Apple will soon begin to dominate:

Radio (if it wasn’t dead already by Sat Radio)
SAT Radio ( Who needs Sat Radio or its pricey receiver anymore-just stream free/paid radio over iPhone)
Cable and Sat TV ( IPTV is soon to be mainstream with Apple TV)
Music (This was Apple’s first victim)
Cellphone Networks (Cellphone service providers will soon have to change their business models to be data providers)
Magazines, Newspapers (new rev model for those companies. “Video killed the radio star” is now “Internet killed the publishing star”)
Books (Kindle meet your daddy, iPad)
Software Apps (App Store… ’nuff said)
Podcasts ( maybe we’ll see a paper form of self-made audio turned into mags called “Padcasts”)

My guess is that the future will be all these services incorporated into having to pay for just a Data Provider combined with Apple’s hardware and Apple’s iTunes media distribution system.

I know the iPad will be an incredible computing device but it will be a minor feat compared to the media deliver ecosystem Apple has slowly created with Wednesday’s announcements being the final “cherry-on-top.”

    here is my prediction:

    1. Watch Blue Ray quality movies directly streamed from internet. It will have a HDMI out as well.
    2. Has an inbuilt projector, so you can do presentations on big screen directly from the tablet.
    3. Its an ebook reader
    4. It runs Windows 7 :) ( no, not really )
    5. You can use your iPhone as a mouse
    6. It will be priced < $100

( I’m not sure why the first post of this comment was published then shortly ommitted… Here goes again: )

THE killer app for the tablet will rather be the killer paradigm of…

sharing screen media and social media interaction.

The large screen size, light weight, and viewability angle of a tablet will make it the most social media device on the market.

Yes we can already share media between devices wirelessly, but this will be the first real shareable device – one that can not only be passed between people but also used by multiple people at the same time.

This is where Apple’s multitouch innovation will shine.

It’s very likely that Apple’s tablet will be designed to allow at least 2 people to use it simultaneously, by that I mean recognise hand movements from different users – even if this is calibrated by the application being used. And/or it could allow more than 10 fingers to be used simultaneously.

Which brings me to the topic at hand – gaming on the tablet.

I’m looking forward to playing multiplayer multitouch games on its screen.

2 player air hockey would be very cool!!!

It doesn’t take much imagination to see the media sharing and social gaming potential for a tablet.

As for standard PC/console games like Mirror’s Edge and World of Goo… it’s likely they will be ported to the tablet at some point to stand with the rest of single player or multiplayer turn-based games, but they don’t point to the game development innovation we are likely to see emerge for the tablet.

If you want to understand tablets and their potential markets – think shareable media and multiplayer multitouch gaming.

  • 3rdpostlucky

It would definitely be an excellent educational tool. I see the way young children take to the iPhone and the iPod Touch. With the solidity of the App Store with all those developers on board and iTMS platform, there’s almost no way this tablet will be a failure. Those developers will certainly find ways to make the tablet a powerful educational tool in ways most people never imagined.

If Apple can offer a solid digital media platform to the school system, Apple could get back what it lost so many years ago. The tablet could be an end run around the desktop computer in education. Not for everything, but for say 80% of things.

Only in theory. Multi-level traffic would be a bitch with the tech we have now. If you can imagine what an air controller station has to deal with at a busy airport, then multiply thousands of times with city traffic at rush hour. Unless each vehicle has some sort of high-speed avoidance mechanisms or fixed flying lanes I can’t see how it would manage all that multi-directional traffic.

I’m only looking at it from my narrow concept of how I envision a flying car and someone else may be able to see a simple solution.

Everytime I think about a tablet device as a huge phone, it reminds me of the good old days of dudes walking down the street with their pants hanging down and the giant ghetto-blasters on their shoulders :) Imagine trying to hold it between your ear and shoulder while talking on it!

  • iphonerulez

“Dicking around?” Right before the iPhone was introduced with a full browsing experience, people were saying that surfing the web on a cellphone was just “dicking around.” The iPhone pretty much changed that experience.

Before the iPod was used for “dicking around” there were all sorts of high-end audio receivers, Walkman cassette players, portable CD players and various mp3 players. Yet people actually thought that “dicking around” with an iPod was a different experience and that’s why they become popular.

“Dicking around” is sometimes just good enough to sell millions of products for those that like to merely do some “dicking around.”

  • http://www.toshiedo.com.au James Mason

This sounds like PR for raising interest to the product. I don’t think this will really be bigger than anything else they’ve done.

I don’t see tablet being an educational tool for awhile. They need to have a decent textbook database.. And what they have right now cannot even remotely be called decent.
I am a college student and i constantly research the availability of textbooks online… But most of the ones i need can only be found in paper form only. And publishers are not in a hurry to publish any electronic copies…. Eventually they will have to, but by that time i will graduate.
So why would i buy the tablet for any educational purposes if it lacks the materials and textbooks i need????
Most likely i will buy it for use as a media device.

oh please, it is just a device. after i bought my iphone last year because of the hype, i found out the next day that it was just a phone. i was not going to use it as a pda because it was faster to jot a quick note in my moleskine ($10) notebook.
sold it on ebay after 2 months of fiddling around.

  • http://buzzvolume.com Mario Nogueira Ramos

In the book about the lauch of the segway it is also told how Jobs suggested marketing plan for it was completely different than what has actually been done afterwards.

It’s not just the device itself, but how you market it as well folks.

  • Zonks

Oh please, each one of those things was only “transformative” for ignorant people who didn’t know better. For people already doing graphics and publishing work, the Mac was just another underpowered computer, and black and white no less. For the 26 million Napster users who already had a complete MP3 collection by 2001, the iPod was just another MP3 player. To the 100 million people who already had smartphones before the iPhone launched, it was just another smartphone. The only people who’s lives Apple transforms, are the people who ignore the world around them, and only notice technology when Apple introduces a new product.

  • big aristotle

I think it will be scroll like. Very thin, can probably fold down neatly and that would make it portable. I once saw a video of him enthusatically mentioning something about a scroll type thing. He might have found a way to acheive. Well, his engineers and himself.

  • Eric

Not cheap. Apple cares more about making a product actually work over making it cheap. I don’t mind spending a little more. It’s better then buying a cheap product that you will never use.

  • Eric

In this case $100 for the SDK.

  • Eric

Actually there are news stories about the iPod being used in Iraq to help solders translate. It has the added bonus of being familiar so the locals already know how to use it and are not scared of it.

  • Joao B

“The only people who’s lives Apple transforms, are the people who ignore the world around them, and only notice technology when Apple introduces a new product.”

Not everyone trolls tech crunch and other tech blogs searching for the latest and greatest in technology. You are so deep into your own shit that you can’t see the forest from the trees anymore.

Fact is tech geeks are in the minority. The majority are those who are snapping up iPods and iPhones by the MILLIONS. Apple’s marketing arm doesn’t really give two shits if you (snarky internet commenter Lee Lloyd) buy either.

220000000 iPods sold to date. 40000000 iPhones sold to date. That’s a hell of a lot of people who “ignore the world around them”

  • Eric

You know that Apple bought PA Semiconductor years ago to build a custom system on a chip microprocessor for mobile devices. Most likely this will use an ARM chip custom designed by Apple.

  • Mattjumbo

Now I am a card-carrying Apple Fanboi and I idolize Steve Jobs to a degree that others might well find nauseating. That said, Steve is no stranger to hyperbole. Steve often proclaims the newest Apple laptop, dekstop, iPod, gadget…to be “the best thing we’ve ever done” so we probably shouldn’t wet ourselves just yet.

The size is essential for immersive video, video chat, and reading books, newspapers and magazines.

  • Eric

I think the space between an iPod and a MacBook exists for some people. I’m looking forward to it. For others it may replace a PC, Kindle, textbook, or television. I’m sure this will open up whole new categories of applications that require long battery life and touch screen interaction. It takes a lot of momentum to make a device like this successful. I think this will be the first time this has ever truly happened for a tablet computer.

  • Eric

Yeah, sales are not slowing. They made the iPhone useful enough that we wear them out quickly. I’m on my second one and will buy another one soon. Not to mention that they introduce new features with each generation. The tablet is really just the next big thing. It is also an answer to net books for people who don’t need or want a full featured computer. It will certainly be easier to use. This also likely represents the SDK starting to grow up and eventually replacing Cocoa on the Mac.

  • http://www.a4aapl.com Prasada

Just like how iTunes and Apps contributed to the success of iPod and iPhone respectively, the new tablet needs something that makes it’s a daily utility on the go: books, magazines, newspapers or tv shows.

According to the latest rumors and reports, Apple seems to be working with various content providers to bring all those to the tablet. Let’s see how Steve’s announcement on 27th looks like!

thank you for just agreeing with the whole the general populous are mindless bots epithet. it doesn’t matter if apple is selling their products 10:1 to everyone else. what’s sad is that people get pulled in by the aesthetics of the brand instead of the actual technology and innards of the product…but then again we’re not all nerds and we don’t care about what we consume, as long as our products do what we want NOW!

  • yeah

Let’s say it does all the coolest things that people have conjectured, and it only costs $800. What device are you going to replace with it? Your iPhone? Kindle? Laptop? Desktop? And will you run out tomorrow to spend your $800 just because it does all these cool things? To me a tablet could replace laptops and Kindles, but I still wouldn’t carry around both an iPhone and a tablet, and I wouldn’t replace my iPhone with a tablet. A new tablet will not have the same penetration as the iPhone.

  • Fill

Kindle sucks. Put iphone apps on a decent sized tablet with a good display, have it play video, have it be big enough to actually be comfortable to read (ok, my eyes suck).

Best yet, add eBooks to the iTunes store! :’)

I guess we have to wait until Tuesday to find out what happens. I just hope the tablet isn’t as closed as the iPhone.

  • Acharya

Agree. There is no way the tablet can beat the iPhone/iPod Touch combo in sales unless Apple sells it for less than 400-500 dollars, which is impossible.

    Same here!
-I have a 3 yrs old MB and I have only had one problem that I was not eventually able to solve (or Apple has stepped in to solve for me)-loved every minute of it’s life.
-I also have a 3 mos old HP tablet that is already going to sleep and requiring at least one hard reset a day, and the screen case is opening at the seams…
-2 iPods: one now used by my now 6 yr old (help) still going strong.

iPhone 3GS after reselling (eBay) a 2G and a 3G…and making enough to buy the following one…
-previous Acer Travelmate Tablet: $3k+ at the time will fetch $130 thru Gazelle…LOL-my son can have it…
Apple is a bit more expensive but the milage on its product is unmatched!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Lee_Lloyd/1526897028 Lee Lloyd

No, actually, it isn’t very many people at all. Those iPod sales are over 9 years, and almost 20 different devices, yet are not even twice the sales of a single generation of the Playstation franchise, and those iPhone sales (which you are inflating a bit, by the way), are over three generations and nearly 10 SKUs, and yet not as much as Nokia sells in a single quarter.

Apple continually sells new iterations of their products to the same 25 million people over and over again. That is fewer than the number of “tech geeks” who were on Napster long before the iPod or iTunes ever existed, and far fewer than the 100 million “tech geeks” who owned Nokia, Sony, HTC, RIM or Palm smartphones long before the iPhone ever came out.

If you want to play the numbers game, fine, but Apple is not the number one phone manufacturer, in fact they aren’t even in the top five, they aren’t the number one smartphone manufacturer, they aren’t the number one gaming device manufacturer, they sure as hell aren’t the number one computer manufacturer, and they aren’t even close to being the number one consumer electronics manufacturer. In fact, they are a very case study in how to turn a niche market into a very lucrative business.

You can’t have it both ways. If geeks who spend all day on the Internet don’t matter, then Apple is virtually irrelevant to anything but the portable audio player market. The mass market definition of a smartphone is (depending on country) either Nokia, RIM, or DoCoMo. The mass market definition of a computer is Windows. The mass market definition of a handheld gaming device is Nintendo. No one, EXCEPT a particular brand of hipper than thou tech geeks, sit around obsessing about Apple products, and how they changed their life.

what i meant is how can something that is useful be worn out quickly? isn’t that a nuisance? does it suggest bad building or an integrated mechanism built into the product for it to be invaluable/incompetent in x amount of time?

Apple – 26/27 Jan – A Big hype and many rumors, guesses, analysis, insider information,
hints from already existing device have already flooded Blogs, Techsites ,Newspaper sites on the Internet. People are so curious to know about the upcoming release in advance meaning before the “Apple” announce it in public. Added salt to this recipe is the official invitations sent out by Apple. Based on “My surfing” in last few days, most of the people are anticipating tablet kind of device from apple. Some said that it would be for health care and some said that it would be for everyday in house holds. My bet is totally different. Apple is known for incarnation of the whole new ecosystem. iTune and Appstore are the classic example. So this time too they may play a same shot who knows?. This time they can give a incarnation of new ecosystem related to “Digital Art”.
They can come up with a platform to sell Digital Arts work of the artist online May you can not download images but you can order painting or art work for your home or office. May be you can download also They may also launch a device like “Drawing Pad” for artists. It will have already known technologies like multi touch and digital brushes for artists. What is the rational behind this? 1) Their invitation made me to think this way.
    2) They released a special mouse some time before. 3) People reported that apple is working on multi touch version of desktop application. 4) There are so many stock photography sites. that means business model is viable. 5) Who is dominant player in providing digital art equipments? Can you guess? There is a company called “WACOM”
who makes multi touch tablets for creative artists. It has be claim on one of the website that they have more that 70% of market share for this kind of device. The device from this company are like industry standard for the artists. again there is a chance for apple to break monopoly. A huge market for selling devices as well with applications. Thats all what i had to say for apple’s upcoming innovation. Let’s see what they launch.

Thank you for reading a long post.

As far as I can tell, there are hundreds of comments from people who have never used OneNote on a Tablet PC. It is one of the biggest reasons I do not consider any Mac hardware, today. The pen paradigm is extremely useful in social environments, like meetings, where putting a screen between you and another person might be considered rude.

If this product is just a “big iPhone” with multi-touch, then whoop-de-doo. However, if it is going to push pen computing forward from 2006, it might end up having the importance Jobs suggests.

@John, Apple products are generally more expensive to purchase but you are getting more in the long term, to clarify:

PRICE is how much you are paying the product to carry it home
VALUE is what you believe the product is worth to you

The majority Apple users (I am one of them) pay more because they are aware of the value. They usually end up making enough money (or saving money) out of using the product, to cover the initial cost and carry on focusing on their job.

    How about this new wrinkle?

Apple announces Wednesday that it is buying Netflix!

And that all those movies and TV shows will be available for streaming (maybe even downloading) to the tablet! I could see various sub levels–perhaps even working like a library as Netflix does somewhat now. $10 so many items out at a time; $20 so many more.

“Nobody wants to haul around a bulky tablet when the iPhone is more practical. A touch screen tablet is not a game changer no matter what it does.”

Given some of the rumors, it may not be intended to be taken out of a building. For the family, stays in the home, for medicine, stays in hospital, for business, stays in office. That doesn’t mean you couldn’t move it, but Apple may be betting such a device would not hover more than a couple of hundred feet from a common point and may have studies showing larger devices rarely are moved great distances. An Audrey on steroids. It is a niche that has never been exploited.

“Call me when it folds down to the size of an iPhone.”

It may fold eventually. A double fold of a 8″ x 13″ tablet would be 4″ x 6.5″ handheld, but I don’t know of any way for a 7/8″ thick handheld to be unfolded to a a 3/16″ tablet, unless the battery and circuits take up very little space and are integrated into the structural frame.

I agree because he is in a position that he has to deliver. It has been 2 1/2 years since the debut of the iPhone. Apple has been notorious for changing the game when competitors get close. Before it was Microsoft Zune, Archos, & iRiver closing on the iPods. Now its a Android, Palm and a Revamped Windows Mobile for the iPhone.

Steve Jobs, the eyes of the world are looking at you to see what is in your magic bag. If it doesn’t deliver those eyes might not look back.

but keep in mind, Apple has only released one invitation, and that’s it. So the media has hyped it, not Apple.

Of course Apple never disappoints since they always provide huge breakthroughs at events like this, so the “hype” is really about the next step in human eveolution. So it’s highly newsworthy if you ask me.

That’s precisely how Apple works. Apple actually says little, the media tries to read between the lines and publishes rubbish speculations and proclamations, which a large segment of the public then regards as fact.

One important feature of print media…the owner-reader can UNDERLINE or HIGHLIGHT.
…Will the Apple Tablet or any others offer Underline or Highlight feature? Then would there have to be a feature…copying the whole book or page to a hard drive or something like that..or how would the reader go back in days, weeks, months, years to review what had been read and highlighted?
If not…that will be one of the things that will extend the life cycle of print media.

Killing the Kindle is not the object. Moving forward with technology to offer more functions to more people is the object. That’s how a company makes money.
Competition motivates innovation, price, quality, and public access to goods.
Kindle is established and will hold its user base and also will advance technically. They have already dropped their pricing.
We wouldn’t probably have Android phones if Apple had not introduced the iPhone…Imagine smart phones of 5 & 10 years from now…Wow.!

Great comment! I am a working producer/director/writer and an adjunct professor, and my research on Edutainment & Convergence verifies exactly what you are talking about in your post. The student who replied about the tablet not having textbooks is incorrect. I purchased all of books online for my doctoral degree from Amazon before and during the original Kindle, and most of my books that I purchased can be viewed on my digital Amazon account. I think another missing point is the gaming aspect which you provided critical insight on in your example. Gaming enables you to engage in remediation, simulation and knowledge building at the same time. This is why the military has been using simulation technology for three plus decades. The best statistics professor that I ever had was the one who taught me how to interact with my real data through the use of excel. I was no statistical wizard, but I learned quickly because it was my data being crunched concretely. Finally, I know for a fact that many of the tier one, flagship, Ivy League and prestigious universities are using iTunesU for learning through podcasts. I learned more through viewing these podcasts than I did from my books because my eyes didn’t get tired when I listened or watched over and over on my Mac or iPod. I imagine that YouTube will also be a great tool as well and many universities also use YouTube to distribute content. In my class, social media is a mandatory part of the class and so are convergence tools. I have noticed increased attendance, better grades, more critical thinking, better projects and more engaged students. Great job! BTW, the state of California is going to digital books for K-12. Did you know that a hidden tuition costs is book which cost nearly approximately $900 or more according to the Cal-Oregon PIRG? So even if one paid a one-time discounted fee for the iSlate or whatever it will be called with discounted e-books that are updated next year digitally, it is still a good deal for a device that will have a 3-4 year lifespan. Now if Apple could create a way to store on the cloud which a recent purchase indicates well we could have something.

  • http://edutainmentandconvergence.vox.com Doc Chris

I think that the AppleTV is the element that will ultimately bring all of these devices together, but Apple has been slow to develop it to its natural potential. If Apple were smart, Apple would create its own social network for iTunes purchasers (folks who get the gift cards and download to their PCs but don’t own Mac products), Apple product owners, and those who are interested in Mac products and then develop an AppleTV network that will work like HULU with streamed video and ads to promote unknown shows and some popular shows. AppleTV would be a great learning tool as soon as Apple begins making flat screen tv/video monitors that are able to download iTunesU and other learning and game-based learning tutorials. The Amazon.com kindle or Barnes&Noble nook will revolutionize the education system by letting students read all their text books on their devices. Also Barnes and noble already has strong ties with many universities so that is a starting point.

However, I think with the economy the way it is, nothing will revolutionize the educational system any time soon. Plenty of professors have already made the textbooks optional in school by putting everything as pdf or power points.

  • http://edutainmentandconvergence.vox.com Doc Chris

Great point! That was one of my initial thoughts! This may be the gateway to getting folks to purchase the bigger macs to handle the bigger jobs that are memory intensive. Just like the iPod has been a gateway to the iPhone and to converting former PC owners like myself several years ago.

Except that the Kindle & Nook have no penetration in schools or universities The Apple Tablet will outsell them within the first few days, so those companies really aren’t players after Wednesday don’t forget.

It’s going to work like this… full color 10 inch display, textbooks from $8.99 and up, typical paperbacks from $1.99 and up. Subscription magazines, $5.99 and up, full year, newspapers $24.99 and up.

People seem to forgetting that Apple will solidify this space. They will be the only major contender for the next 10 years or so. And while I totally think the Kindle and Nook will BENEFIT from this release, they won’t be considered usable after Wednesday.

Apple has worked on Tablets for DECADES, they are really the only companies that understand how they will work in society, so Wednesday is going to be quite interesting… This could be bigger than the iPod and iPhone, COMBINED.

No flying cars, get rid of cars. What we need are “walking legs” so people can get rid of all that fat they’ve accumulated because they just have to drive two blocks for a pack of smokes.

Using legs for their intended purpose for reasonable distances (like two miles or less) will also reduce car traffic, reduce CO pollution, and reduce the income to terrorist countries [who are trying to kill us, duh] for their oil. It might even reduce some crime if more people were out walking and burning calories instead of sitting/texting/not-paying-attention in their little asthma inducing, heart attack enhancing, obese promoting, pollution-mobiles.

And that might lead to books on ethics, which textbook vendors will learn to charge $20 for their product, not gouge students by trying to charge $80-$140 that costs less than $7.50 to produce.
