BlackBerry, the  Canadian smartphone maker formerly known as RIM — aka Research In Motion — will start trading under its new name on February 4, with its new ticker symbols effective from the start of trading on that day.

BlackBerry said it will trade as BBRY on the Nasdaq, and as BB on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

CEO Thorsten Heins announced the name change at the launch of the company’s new BlackBerry 10 OS platform on Wednesday. “RIM becomes BlackBerry. It is one brand. It is one promise,” he said, adding: “Our shareholders are investing in BlackBerry.”

From February 4th BlackBerry’s shareholders will literally be investing in a company trading as BlackBerry. Although, legally, RIM will still be RIM — at least for a little while longer. The company said that despite doing business as BlackBerry its legal name is not changing until shareholders vote for the official change at the Company’s Annual General Meeting later this year.

Last year’s Annual General Meeting was held on July 10.
