Dell made its own move into the bring your own device market today with the acquisition of Credant Technologies and its data protection technologies designed to encrypt information from smartphones and other devices to servers and the cloud. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The acquisition points to the further consolidation of the mobile device management market. Earlier this month, Citrix acquired Zenprise, pointing to the increasing value placed on software and services that help companies manage the smartphones, iPads and tablets people bring to work.

The deal represent for Dell its continued push into offering enterprise solutions. It also provide another piece to fit with Wyse and its own device management technology. Dell acquired Wyse earlier this year for $1.2 billion. At Dell World, Wyse announced the K3000, which gives IT administrators the ability to manage mobile devices; manage permissions; see what apps an employee is using as well as offering the ability to lock or turn off a device if need be.

The acquisition also fits with Dell’s purchase of SonicWall, which allows for people to access data inside the enterprise, behind the firewall. Credant competes with Symantec and EMC’s RSA Security unit.
