Sony, Warner Brothers, and Disney are mulling over the prospect of offering $30 rentals of new movies before they come to DVD or Blu-Ray. This would presumably allow a family to watch a movie that they weren’t able to get in to see at the theaters, a sort of WWE-style main-event pay-per-view deal that will almost completely bypass the cable operators and will be available on any number of CE platforms.

Sony is already trying the service and offered Hancock and Cloudy With a Chance of What The Heck Did They Do To This Kid’s Book for $24.95 via Bravia TV sets. This could work with devices like PS3 and the XBox 360 and the first movies should appear later this year.
