Source: Microsoft Bing Taking Over iPhone Search
Michael Arrington
May 28, 2010

[See Update below] Microsoft Bing will replace Google in the next version of the iPhone operating system to be released in June, we’ve heard from mulitple sources, including a high level source who claims to have been briefed on the matter. We’re not calling this more than a rumor yet, but one thing is sure – our sources close to Google in particular are speaking freely about this as fact. In January Business Week reported that Microsoft and Apple were in talks over an iPhone search deal, and the deal certainly would be brilliant for Microsoft.

There’s been speculation around Google’s future on the iPhone since last year when the first public spat broke out between the companies over the Google Voice app for the iPhone. Android’s continued gains in market share only highlight Google’s direct competition with Apple, and the fact that so many core iPhone apps, including search and maps, are controlled by Google, has been a sore point with Apple. From that post:

Multiple sources at Google tell us that in informal discussions with Apple over the last few months Apple expressed dismay at the number of core iPhone apps that are powered by Google. Search, maps, YouTube, and other key popular apps are powered by Google. Other than the browser, Apple has little else to call its own other than the core phone, contacts and calendar features.

But Google was rumored to be paying Apple $100 million a year for the search rights to iPhone, along with the ability to serve search ads. Apple would likely have stuck with them unless Microsoft was willing to pay as well, and it certainly wasn’t a lock that Google Search would be removed from the iPhone.

There were rumors yesterday that Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer would attend the WWDC event on June 7 to announce Visual Studio development for the iPhone, although they were quickly retracted. Our sources on this are independent of that story.

Update: Interesting – new sources are saying “It’s more complicated than this” and not to expect Google search to be removed from the iPhone next month. Also hearing that Google isn’t paying anything like $100 million/year to Apple for the search rights to the iPhone.

Back to you Vic! Vic did trash Apple at google IO, but the green light must of have come from the top. I wonder if this is the result of all those trash talking or it's been in the works for a while.

If this is true, then it will be the last straw for me. Adios iPhone

Is this referring to removing Google as DEFAULT search (like how Google is now, but you can switch to Yahoo) or removing Google COMPLETELY from search? It would be insane to remove them completely, so hopefully we are left with Bing (default), Yahoo, and Google?

I don't think that this will happen as it is, it may be that Apple licenses the search engine from Yahoo/Microsoft and place it as the default with an option to change it for your favorite one, Yahoo or Google. I would like to see Apple dropping any major Google-powered app to see how Vic Gundotra's face and it will happen sooner or later, Apple has an arsennal of good applications ready to be deployed, Siri, Placebase and Lala and a few location based patents. Somebody at Google thought Apple was sleeping, this is not the Apple of yesteryears, Apple is out looking for blood and it will take whatever route to hurt its rivals, Engadget's news about the $99 AppleTV is a clear demonstration that Google is far from knowing Apple's strategy.

  • GSI

So, is Apple going to make Bing the default and then give users a choice of changing search providers or is it going to make me defect to Android?

  • Peter Miles

Apple finally realizes that Google is its rival. Simple as that.

As far as the VS for iPhone rumor goes, how is that allowed considering Apple's limitations on compiled platforms? Unless they are developing a VS for Mac which would compete with Xcode, what is going to be the development language and what libraries will it link to?

If Apple wants, they could switch to Microsoft completely by also using their maps database…! Without necessarily MS' branding

I rarely use Safari's built in search as I opt for Google's voice search app. It understands my spoken searches 95% of the time and it's very handy while driving and you want to listen to a song on youtube or find directions.

I did try the bing app, but it seemed bloated and the voice search results did not compare to Google's app.

If true, this tells me one thing. Apple is so very, very scared of Android. You don't just switch from the world's default (best) search engine to your foe's second rate offering for a mere few more million $ of grease money. The GTrain is approaching fast, so they're switching tracks.

On the flip side, Google is obviously very confident with Android as well to let this deal die with Apple. And maybe with all the apps that everyone has uses, pure search through the mobile browser is not as popular and profitable as it used to be. At least not worth $100m anyway.

  • reisender

"Search, maps, YouTube, and other key popular apps are powered by Google. Other than the browser, Apple has little else to call its own other than the core phone, contacts and calendar features."

What if Apple just buys the search results and places its own iAds in them.

  • pmoosh

    Well,
first off, if this is true I hope Apple put its touch on the product. Also I would believe they don't lock you in on search (they didn't before). Right now you have the choice between Google and Yahoo (which is or will be MS anyways).
Secondly and that is if the AppleTV rumor is true. Bing will also come to that box. Search on Google TV was one of the better features demonstrated at Google I/O.

This whole thing becomes now very interesting and lots of questions can be asked …

That's it. People use and want Google search for a reason. As long as you can set your default search engine people will switch to what they want, and Google won't be paying anything. . . now if you won't be able to change your default search engine then things will get interesting.

  • User

I like Bing more than Google. and their maps are way better

  • Demensi

I can sort of agree with this but it seems more like a business move than a spiteful move. Apple's stock is rapidly approaching Google's. If Google wants to be the default they are going to have pay for it, maybe they just weren't willing to pay the price…

  • Yokahn

Bing is actually pretty decent. Not sure what everyone is complaining about. Try it. You'll like it.

  • nick

Wow the Level of fanbois here is amazing. I've use Bing and it definitely has many improvement above Google and gives great search results. I can say it's better than google in many ways. Before anyone shouts and claim i am a MS fanboy, note that i use chrome as my default browser, Bing as my search engine and Yahoo as my email, so don't even try.

  • John

Lot's of bad blood between Google and Apple. So its no surprise to me. I actually like Bing and have taken advantage of Bing bucks on many purchases. I think the Search engine still needs some tweaking but I get decent results with Bing.

  • sticky-bit

even more reason to switch to Android?

  • Alex

I would love to have Bing as default search provider on my iPhone.

  • desinformado

Like Microsoft… Apple has its own agenda and Google is not part of it, so whatever Google does it won't disturb Apple at all, Microsoft was even bigger than Google and Apple knocked it down, so it is about time, Google's Android can take 99% of the mobile market, Apple will find its way with innovation.. or do you think Smith is smarter than Jobs? I don't think so, Apple is just deploying its strategy, Google is shouting and screaming to create buzz, because all its earning comes from search, others projects are just a new way to burn some millions, like Microsoft.

Let go of your iAttitude and smell the competition.

  • Michael

I don't know exactly how it would work as I don't know the licensing deals but…I would have loved a scenario where Google updates one of those major Google apps with something that wouldn't go through the App Store policy. Not to screw the iPhone users but to put Apple in a dilemma.

Bing does not get better results when doing research.

Yahoo Mail is full of problems such as putting more than 1/5 of all IP's on the internet on a SPAM blacklist due to their lame scripting (when users click that a mail is spam the IP for the email is sent to a list where if that IP was collected a certain number of times then it is blacklisted). For those with startups you will notice that your Yahoo Mail users often see your registration verification emails in the SPAM folder and users are less likely to complete the registration.
The other common issue with Yahoo Mail is they are down several times a week!

    LOL!!!

  • anna

I think majority of people use default search engine and they do not switch to any other search engines.
That's why Google gave pretty a lot of money fo Mozilla Foundation to install Google as a default search engine for a Firefox and Russian Yandex gave money to Mozzilla to install Yandex as a default search engine for Russian version of Firefox

  • anna

Do you think so. I try Bing once a month, it improved significantly for the last 12 months.

what makes google better than bing is the key, relevancy. I've tried bing many times for searching for php programming related questions that I need answers to, with bing I'm scrolling pages, with google answer is in the first 5 results every time. So if you have time to scroll through several pages in bing results hey stick with it, if time is money like it is for me and you need answers damn fast, google is the way.

  • http://intensedebate.com/people/reneeswifts reneeswifts

For a second I almost believe it. Not until I read the update. "new sources are saying “It’s more complicated than this” — This just means everything is uncertain and this nothing more than just a myth.

For me? The real ice-breaker for June 7 will be that Verizon iPhone 4g….

  • Mentis

Bing is still not good enough to be default. It should be at least as good that people should not switch to google within a day or two itself. Bing can improve results once yahoo integration is over, they will have more data to analyse and improve relevance of search results.

  • http://www.farrfeed.com TaosJohn

Bing Maps are better than Google Maps??? You've got to be kidding. They're not in the same league.

  • redwall_hp

I assume this means that it will be the *default* search engine. Certainly they're not ripping Google out of the search options page. (After all, Yahoo is in there…) That would piss-off a lot of people, including myself. Bing seriously sucks when you try to run queries more advanced than the simple two-word searches most people run. It works well for the popular queries, but not for ones that need to be very specific. Anyway, Apple would be risking the wrath of the EU if they tried something like that…

  • http://twitter.com/usmlecomlex @usmlecomlex

The only way this will help MSFT is if the core algorithm for Bing is improved. Adding more users via platforms is fine and paying for it is OK, but users want great results in their search. Bing has come a long way but their index is still no where near the scale of Google. On the iPhone users want a seamless experience between search, email and maps. This may help MSFT get more users into Live. Also, will this open up opportunities for developers? Developers, developers, developers is what the platform wars are about.

  • http://twitter.com/Merredith @Merredith

Bing is actually excellent when you have an idea what you're searching for; GOOG is better when you need a huge universe of results. This whole archetypal "who's evil today" thing is silly. Plus, re Android, the inconsistencies in quality between phones/platforms may have some switchers missing their iPhones sooner than you'd think.

I think this is great news. I also have some other great news about a great way for current Apple iPhone OS Developers to get more projects for money. Go and visit Elance.com and find all the projects you want to bid on. I did about 6 months ago and I am now actually turning down project because there are way too many for me to handle. I have also made a ton of money doing this part time. Don't take my word for it, go visit yourself. Just one developer to another!

  • Guest

Count me in on that issue. I don't understand why more people aren't concerned that Google thinks it has a right to mine and sell every little scrap of information it can glean from people. When a company like this caves in to the communist Chinese government on one hand, and allows the Chinese authorities to spy on their own people, as long as Google can profit, then in effect tells the German government that it has no right to inquire as to what info Google has collected on German citizens following several complaints, Google comes off as being more than a little creepy. There is just something a little sinister about this company's motives, me thinks, and I try to avoid using Google when possible. Those of you using Android phones might want to consider how much of your info Google is syphoning off every time you make a call, use an app, or perform a search.

First off let me say that i am an Android use but, if i can. allow me to speak for iphone users.

I dont think that Apple should use anything less than the best although it may not be great for the company, the company needs to understand that they need to keep people happy and what better way then to always use the best?

I mean i know Google and Mac are at war but if google is paying Mac to be their search engine and the mass want google as their search engine then it should be so. Thats the problem when something is not open source. You have to comprise with what THEY want and i hate that

Personally if you like being controlled then fine but if youve been thinking about given Android a try you should check out what they have accomplished lately here: http://getyourgadgetsgoing.com/2010/05/25/android...

I think Google is smarter than this – I don't think they would have given Apple access to YouTube and Maps without something in return – exclusive search.

So if Apple tries to screw – Google can do the same with YouTube. Apple can deliver alternative to search + maps, but YouTube – think again.

  • Adrian E.

I have tried out Bing a few times, and for most purposes it was much worse than Google; I found Bing to be so bad that it is close to being useless.

It would be quite typical of Apple to force its users to use a worse search enginge instead of a better one. This is the same customer-unfriendly attitude that lead to the censorship of applications that can be installed on iPhones, which has lead anyone who is not an Apple fanboy and is at least a bit interested in freedom to switch to another operating system, such as Android.

The main effect of switching from a good search engine to a bad one is that the iPhone becomes even less attractive than it is now.

I hate Bing. I have 3 computers, 1 desktop & 2 laptops, Bing has managed to be on all of them. It is the most irritating piece of crap. I can hardly read the news or anything else, cause it keeps popping up. I've tried to remove it, by clearing the cache and cookies everyday and the next time I go online IT'S back. If there's a way to remove it, please let me know. I even removed it from my search source, no luck. I WILL NEVER USE ONE OF THE PHONES THAT HAS BING ON IT. If Apple does this, it will be making a HUGE and expensive mistake. DFW

  • benackles

Vimeo has a version of their video network built with html5. Although Vimeo doesn't really share closely the level of market penetration as YouTube. I'd argue it's a better service. Google Apps on the iPhone work great today. However, with the rapid growth of Android-based phones I'd like to see different services running on the iPhone…If only to keep things competitive.

  • mattsoldo

The way Google structures these deals is to negotiate revenue split on the advertising revenue generated from the searches. This is what they do with Firefox, Amazon, and all of the big members of their search network. Microsoft has been buying market share by having high revenue guarantees to make up for their (historic) lower monetization. A revenue guarantee would be quite unusual for a Google deal. It is possible however that the revenue split resulted in $100 million or so for Apple.
