Hewlett-Packard To Kill Windows 7 Tablet Project
Michael Arrington
Apr 29, 2010

Hewlett-Packard has killed off its much ballyhooed Windows 7 tablet computer, says a source who’s been briefed on the matter.

The device was first unveiled by Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer at CES 2010 in January and was supposed to hit the market in mid 2010. But our source tells us that HP is not satisfied with Windows 7 as a tablet operating system and has terminated the project (something CrunchGear mentioned months ago).

HP may also be abandoning Intel-based hardware for its slate lineup simply because it’s too power hungry. That would also rule out Windows 7 as an operating system.

So what will HP use as an operating system? Look for Google-powered devices, which have already been announced. And HP really does seem determined to make a go of the Palm WebOS. They said how important it was to them yesterday, and they will likely experiment with porting it to a slate-type device.

Will WebOS emerge as a successful operating system for tablet devices? That seems very unlikely given the dominance of the closed Apple OS and the likely success of the open Android and Chrome operating systems from Google. To get traction from third party developers with WebOS HP will need to sell a lot of units. And it’s not clear what they’d gain from all that effort, anyway. HP knows how to build and sell hardware, not operating systems.

We’ve reached out to HP for comment. Here’s the video promoting the HP Windows tablet from January:

Is anyone really surprised by this? They said they were "doubling down on WebOS" – so expect it to developed to run on their tablet.

  • AJCOHEN

They'll rework Palm OS for tablets. They may come late to the party but I would think they'll have something compelling.

  • GlennEU

Just what i posted in the comment of the previous post about courier being dead…

    You're welcome ;)

    Regards
    @GlennEU

  • Phil

HP has always been weak in software. Buying an an OS that failed to capture any significant market share just shows that they're still weak in that area.

  • http://www.no.com Me

it's is not the same as its. also, other silly typos. srsly. no credibility.

  • Justin

Damn it, I wanted the HP Slate bad. I refuse to be an enabler to overlord Jobs.

I need an alternate, a good alternate, now!

Mike whatever happened with that company that screwed you on the Crunchpad deal?

  • http://www.bloggermint.com Franklin Manuel

Its good that HP kicked away Windows 7. It might be an good OS for PC and laptops, but not for a tablet PC. Running a tablet PC with Windows 7 drain the battery very soon.

  • http://www.meetingwave.com jb

Did Palm's OS fail because of the OS or because of the devices? While Palm was being sold, I often read their OS was sort of a jewel. HP has gotten pretty good at making laptops. Seems that matching that capability with a solid OS could create a competitive tablet, but agree they'd need to gain traction. However, not sure what choice HP had if wants to get into tablets.

  • Darren

Yes, it was definitely an interesting move. Buying an OS that is the best (according to HP) doesn't lure the developers who make the apps, having a large install base does. It's unlikely that they'll get that.

  • jp

i predict Google will announce a tablet device at their Google IO conference and pass it out to developers!

  • Brian!

What "source that has been briefed on the matter."?

I am curious. All this news seems like speculation, and yet just this week I saw another HP Slate picture in the wild.

  • http://stevenbenner.com/ Steven Benner

For a Windows 7 slate PC keep an eye out for the Hanvon BC10C and BC10E. Now available in China, we're still waiting on a North America release date.

These two were looking to be better than the slate anyway, especially the BC10C.

  • youngluck

I'm as machead as they get, and even I'm willing to admit WebOS was sexy as Hell. Possibly the sexiest of the big 3. But the Hardware crap. HP knows hardware… and now they have incredible software to run on it. I'm exited to see what this does to the space. It will push Apple to KEEP innovating, instead of becoming complacent. Trust me, the Palm acquisition was good for everybody.

  • http://blog.ceesaxp.org Ceesaxp

    > HP knows how to build and sell hardware, not operating systems.

This is true for Compaq part of HP. There was time HP was developing and selling OS: HP/UX.

  • Scarf

I think this is a smart movie by HP. Windows 7 was doomed as a tablet os. I would love to see Palm OS on a tablet! The interface will probably scale nicely and have some really great graphics with the swiping! But to be honest. I would not want to go up against Apple and Google! Everyone else is going to be an "also ran"!

  • http://rodsramblings.wordpress.com rodh257

This sucks. There would have to be some hefty power problems to make them drop it yet again after years of development.

I have a bunch of windows apps I want to run on a slate, I don't care if while running them I can only use it for a couple of hours before a charge, I just want to run them. Programs like engineering software etc are what I"m talking about.

If they did this due to their acquisition of palm, then it is one bad decision. They'll spend ages getting the OS to work on their tablet, and by the time this comes out, Android and iPad (and hopefully someone else with a Windows Slate… XP for all I care) will have dominance.

  • TWiT Commander

let's put things into perspective here. hp is the largest vendor of personal computers. what would be the impact of porting webos to x86 (remember it's linux-based, and apps are written using web standards) and uses it as a quick-boot operating system across much of it's line of laptop computers? instant penetration and distribution!

  • tomb

    Microsoft, HP…

Apple has far deeper pockets than any of us had imagined, methinks.

  • Passing Reader

Your spelling & grammar are deficient. "for it’s slate lineup" should read "for its slate lineup". This is *basic* English.

  • hyloka

Microsoft just needs to put Win Phone 7 on a snapdragon or Tegra 2 powered slate without the phone stack…that I would be interested in, especially if it still had the office integration and they integrated one-note or something similar.

MSFT needs to get over the fear of screwing partners in the mobile space and just launch it's own products, because ultimately it won't have any partners anyway with Android being used by them all…

  • lisa

I love that HP Slate CES presentation way back in January — then suddenly, there's a sudden shift seeing HP using webOS now as its official platform for its devices.

I was really hoping MS will release its courier tablet — Although it halted today. So I guess, there'll be no tablet for Microsoft this year.

  • G

I'm glad they cancelled it. I have a Win7 netbook and a convertible Win7 tablet, both which I love, but I just never saw the point of the HP Slate. Touch input on Windows 7 is good for a desktop OS (One Note, Photoshop, among some other things) but to dedicate it to just that was a really bad idea.

BTW, I'm super pissed that Microsoft cancelled the Courier.

  • addicted

    @youngluck is absolutely right.

I think as far as mobile OS'es go, WebOS competed with the iPhone OS for the top spot. What it lacked was SW polish (which can be fixed with the infusion of some resources), decent HW (which HP should be able to help with) and a decent 3rd party eco-system (which HP's "doubling down" on WebOS should help, since most devs were worried about the future of WebOS).

I think HP will be able to provide the first true competitor to the iPad, and also compete well with the iPhone.

  • Sandra Ainsworth

HaHaaa! What an embarrassment to Microsoft to be abandoned.

Let the new world order rise up, with Android slates, webOS slates, and iPads.

  • Microsoft

"Will WebOS emerge as a successful operating system for tablet devices? That seems very unlikely given the dominance of the closed Apple OS and the likely success of the open Android and Chrome operating systems from Google."

    let me repeat that quote

"and the likely success of the open Android and Chrome operating systems from Google.""

How is chrome OS successful? the most anyone knows so far is that its from google. Do you want to know the only thing you certified with this statement? is that you are a google fanboy and declare anything a success as long as its from google, which iss very pathetic, especially for a writer.

  • http://nikolay.com Nikolay Kolev

It was bricky anyway. WePad FTW!

  • http://Www.centrax.com Winst

This is so very interesting! If true, not even HP could make the slate PC work. Let's see if Android make into a tablet this year.

  • http://www.toddmoses.com Todd Moses

They should just go with Android on the ARM processor. It is fast, has an app market, and proven in the field.

  • Ram Shanmugam

"HP knows how to build and sell hardware, not operating systems."

    Mike,

You clearly don't know anything about the pre-Internet history of the tech industry. HP was well known for its respected "HP-UX" operating system, which is a variant of Unix. In fact, HP UX is still in production, and is currently on version 11i v3. It is the OS for HP's high end servers – HP Integrity and HP 9000 [http://h71028.www7.hp.com/enterprise/us/en/os/hpux11i-v3-overview.html].

HP UX lost out in the commodity server market with the advent of Linux, which also killed the other Unix variants [IBM AIX, Silicon Graphics IRIX, SCO Unix, and more recently Sun Solaris].

HP does indeed know how to develop and sell operating systems, and has a longer history of doing so that any other OS vendor in the market except maybe for IBM. This includes Apple, Google and Microsoft :-)

  • The.Alexander

The Slate was most probably going to dissapoint you. There are already touch enabled netbooks with the spec's the slate would sport with Windows 7 on them and they are not recieving good reviews. (Asus, Lenovu, google em and take a loot at the specs.)

ATOM is -NOT- the right chip for a Windows 7 OS with a touch skin UI on top of it.

To perform responsively close to a limited Mobile OS a CULV processer is the minimum.

If you want a Win 7 tablet there are many convertibles already available but expect to pay at least $900 for a responsive device.

By the way I think the IPAD is an Application Appliance not a tablet PC.

They're damn sexy but I also refuse to support Apple's current Chinese government like tech strategy.

  • Dave

    LOL… Typical Apple hater!

    It goes like this:

    1) Apple creates a cool product

    2) Apple haters start hating on it and point out it doesn't have X, Y, Z etc.

    3) MS announces something similar and they're all happy and say how they'll wait.

    4) Years pass and MS/Acer/HP still haven't come out with anything similar and Apple's already on v2.

    5) Apple haters still secretly lust over Apple products and are going mad that they still can't have it.

    6) MS releases something (Pink) or kills the product (Courier) and Apple haters start crying.

All the while Apple users enjoy life and their cool and USABLE devices :)

  • jason

no it's basic english orthography, which is, incidentally, a hell of a lot different than english. as for a f.u.c.k-up of this nature, the fault goes to the editor, not the writer.

you're* tact and manner are deficient.

*dude, i know—step down from you high horse.

  • RobJ

After iPad debut, lots of slate guys like HP, Microsoft, Google, Asus etc etc had to go back to drawing board. Apple was very aggressive in pricing such a great product. It is the best first generation product ever. It will take atleast 2 years for others to catch up (copy) with the functionality. I don't know when they catch up all other services (Appstore, Bookstore etc). Companies are pouring in their pants. That's why Adobe, Google are using wrong reasons to attach Steve Jobs. They should stop the nonsense of Open vs Closed. I hope Apple will kill Google Search. Google wants to put its finger in every hole they find. Finally they will run out of fingers.

  • http://rodsramblings.wordpress.com rodh257

I'm also sick of people thinking they need to copy every little thing Apple do, good or bad. Why do we need a restricted operating system on the slate?

The iPad is getting compared with netbooks and noting that it lacks a lot of functionality and adds restrictiveness, why would you copy this? You need a point of difference!

  • Ricky

I love the idea that they got rid of the intel base unit and Windows 7, now they can get the Android base Atom unit up and running. Not only is the intel just to power hungry it's also very hot! The Android base system make sense and can be done quickly.

  • John

If HP renames the vaporware webOS tablet to The Slate, then Ballmer technically introduced the Linux Jesus Tablet at CES. LOL!

  • Hot Fuzz

Wow, this may be one of the worst days for Apple haters that I can remember. Not one but two "iPad Killers" throwing up the white flag before even crawling into the ring?

    Astounding.

  • John

HP-UX isn't that great of a UNIX (better than AIX but that's not saying much). Nothing like Solaris (which Oracle will see die on the vine). And HP basically killed off whatever niche market OpenVMS had. HP just doesn't have a great track record with the software side.

And Palm wasn't great at building their client-side software, resorting to USB-device hacks to make the Pre sync with iTunes instead.

So where is all this software expertise suddenly going to come from?

  • http://www.goldfishview.com David Shellabarger

I kind of agree here. I'm a google fan boy and I don't think Chrome OS will be very useful at all until several years down the road when the web is more mature.

  • http://ARMdevices.net Charbax

  • J

Will you please learn the difference between it's and its???

  • John

Atom CPU, won't run Flash. LOL!

  • lygren

I can understand their struggling over an power hungry Intel processor. But why WebOS? It has not taken off under Palm, why will it under HP? Not even Google goes with an HTML 5 based Pad. HP could easily use Android instead for their slate if they dislike Win7. It's open source, it's customizable and so on.

    1.2B wasted.

  • Eric

No! Tell me that they were wrong and Steve Jobs was right about power consumption of computer OSs on portable devices! Impossible! :-D

  • Michael Arrington

yeah well IBM used to make typewriters, too. That doesn't mean anyone there still knows how to.

  • http://www.jlist.com Peter Payne

Wish I still had some Microsoft stock to sell. Done sold it all already.

  • Ben

I'm guessing you've never used webOS. Pretty much everyone who's used webOS agrees that its failure to grab mainstream attention is a function of poor marketing, limited market penetration due to launching on Sprint and arguably less tan stellar hardware. You'd be hard pressed to find anyone who blames the quality of the OS or the user experience it offers. With HP's pocketbook helping to get the word out, I suspect attitudes will change.

  • getanipad

crunch pad would be huge fail.

look at the joo joo. garbage.

  • l

    Typical Apple user.

Only looking for "coolness" or what's trendy. Fails to realize why people prefer MS because they NEED x, y, and z, something Apple usually knows they can add but don't because they attract such a simple minded fanbase.

I hope you realize 80% of the people who bought an iPad are using it manly for it's ~nifty cool~ apps and shit. When MS does something right, they can wait years to release something big because people are so satisfied. Apple has to constantly release a new version of something every 6 months to keep their snobby hipsters happy.

  • McBeese

My experience is that it's proven to be poor. Android is a couple of years (at least) behind iPad based on my experience. If HP thought Android was a credible o/s, they wouldn't have spent a billion+ $ to acquire webOS.

  • http://realestatekhoj.wordpress.com realestatekhoj

I agree the Ben – the webOS user experience is great , and I am sure HP will use this to its advantage.. now it actually has its own OS :) ..

This is pretty exciting two of the top PC brands are no more using Microsoft.. and with the chrome slate to come out soon things are going to change pretty quickly for Gates and company/./.

    http://www.realestatekhoj.wordpress.com

  • McBeese

I agree. I wonder what Dell is thinking now.

  • KenC

Of course this makes sense, W7 on an Atom chip was just going to be a netbook without the keyboard. Battery life was going to be bad, bootup slow, heat miserable, etc., etc., etc. A true mobile OS on a true mobile chip is the way to go. Yes, yes, so it's what Apple did, but they made the right choices.

  • Dave

Good for developers, shitty for GOOG shareholders. We all know how Nexus One failed miserably.

Google needs to stay out of consumer devices.

  • jhoosac

Steve Jobs can have a very long vacation this summer.

  • Player_16

@rodh257; Probably because the OS's that's current is too fat for just doing little things like surfing or twitts or lite games… quick info while being lazy. Would you want to illustrate on a netbook? Look at some photos? This time, Apple is 'plowing' a lead instead of improving on what's all ready there (MP3's, smart phones). They've sold more 'tablet' style computers in this time frame that all the others over the 10 year period combined… but those 'tablets' were nothing more than head scratchers anyway. Even the modified Macbook Waz made was a limited special order. He knew it wasn't going to be a commercial success.

  • David Dennis

WebOS appears to be the only phone/tablet OS with genuine multitasking. Even Android apparently does task freezing trick similar to iPhone OS v4. This would seem to give it a genuine advantage over rivals once the current ruinously bad WebOS battery life problems are straightened out.

I'm typing this on an iPad and while the onscreen keyboard really is typo-crazy, the interface is really addictively fun. Palm certainly has the best multitasking interface of any phone OS and that should greatly enhance the device over its rivals.

As a developer their $50 per app submission fee to their app store is a giant turn-off. If they want any kind of traction, that has to go. I pretty much stopped developing WebOS apps because of this – the very niche nature of much of what I did made that decision sadly easy.

Apple has more iPad apps – note, I said iPad, not iPhone – than Palm has WebOS apps. That's pretty remarkable because I think they have actually had comparable sales at this point.

In my admittedly limited Android experience, by the way, I think the interface is too clunky for a tablet. In my opinion, iPhone is the gold standard and WebOS is at least somewhat competitive. Android is way behind.

One thing for sure, though: I tried a tablet PC many years ago and it simply had no appeal at all. It really looks like the bespoke operating system market is the only one that will work for tablets, and I think of all the moves HP could have made, this is the best one by far.

    David

  • keyush

Wow…just…wow. Apple has got all these guys by the balls. After all that crap all those tech people were spewing about Apple and the iPad, now everyone is throwing away their great "iPad killers" that were going to be so cool and show Apple how to do it right. Now they're going to start putting tweaked smartphone OSes on tablets and worry about things like power consumption…WOW. Apple won.

  • John Barkerja

I wonder if Chrome OS will be as successful as their latest pet projects (Wave and Buzz come to mind..)

  • http://www.mikekey.com Mike Key

I have to third on this one. I own a Palm Pre on sprint, not the most amazing piece of hardware, but the OS is so simple and intuitive. I have used an iPhone for work and while the iPhone is dandy, I found that I just don't need a bizzial apps for my Palm Pre because it already does everything I need.

Palm put an engineer in as their CEO and he didn't execute the marketing very well. HP really has the resources to market the OS properly.

They also have a very large business sector, and could go straight after RIM.

I think webOS on a tablet device would be super smart and very intuitive.

  • Shawn

    I agree with you John…

Goog's days are numbered…. 99.9% of their profit comes form search…. and 0.1% comes from interest earned…

if iphone switches from goog to siri and with bing continously inovating … i am sure there would be nothing left for the goog…

    no offense to goog fanboys…

goog wave and buzz and chromes is a BIG FLOP in recent years…

  • http://www.intelligentdental.com Mian

Chrome OS is not built for Slate, it's going to be like teeth grinding to use.

Silly, I saw toshiba and hp demo their tablets at comdex in 1999, keep hustling guys!

    Sent from my iPad

  • http://perivision.net/wordpress perivision

I guess HP decided that there is not enough market between an Appliance which the iPad owns, ( more on that here.http://www.perivision.net/wordpress/?p=2887 ) and the current crop of tablets. It would make sense to build a webOS version. What the heck, they already own it.

  • http://vitriolix.com vitriolix

Only in your bizarro world does "profitable device" equal "miserable failure". Google never set out to sell millions of N1's at the expense of their partners, they set out to change the perception of contracts and phone purchasing in the market, and hopefully do it not at a loss. They succeeded at both.

  • Aki Kivirinta

Sad sad news. We already had a software which could have benefitted from this.. and would have worked straight away without any tweaking. HP guys are damned fools.

  • Mark A

    Kind of makes sense.

  • Ji

Well HP has the WebOS powered slate and chrome has — oh well, the chrome tablet / google tablet.

Nice match up for products that still remain on a unicorn stage.

  • http://www.isights.org/ Michael Long

Nice revisionist history. Yeah, they never wanted to actually sell a product they spent millions creating.

That's why they tried selling it off an exclusive link on the most visited home page on the planet.

  • Jaxon Triggs

Uhh, no offense to you but Chrome is nooooot a flop, and Bing….innovating? Are you serious? Like…innovating what? A continuous image search?

If Google's days are numbered where the heck is Macroshaft? Those guys have one foot in the grave already.

  • http://www.isights.org/ Michael Long

He could have started off by saying, "Apple creates a great product", which would have equated to the same thing, and killed your rant right off the bat.

But hey, when you're right, you're right. Apple only creates "cool" products. People only buy them again and again because they're "cool" products, and not because they actually do what they're supposed to do, and do it well.

And the fact that they're "cool" is the only reason that Apple has the highest user satisfaction ratings in the business.

As to MS doing something right and being able to wait years because of it, I have just one word for you…

Vista. Seven years in the making, and they still cut half the feature set, and it still sucked.

  • Jaxon Triggs

    Typical MS employee.

Doesn't innovate a damn thing, waits way too long to come out with a half assed device or solution that is +90% copied from existing competitor products whichare already kicking their butt, only almost none of copied features are even as good.

Insulting the immense "fan base" aka. customers and calling them stupid in rage over why they haven't waited around for Macroshaft vaporware is sad. Viewing Apple products as inferior to MS is SAAAAD. Wait years .. to release something cool? Like … what?

    XBOX vs PS3 – lose

    Win7 vs OSX – lose

Win Mobile vs iPhone OS – lose

    Zune vs iPod – lose

    Bing vs Google – lose

Courier vs iPad – no contest (lol)

MS is in the process of death, wake up. Gates is gone, and Ballmer….what a joke!!! Maybe you should buy two copies of anything Macrosuck while you still can chico.

  • Isotonic

Maybe, but touch requires a fundamentally different approach to a mouse-based UI. With a bit more development they can try for the best of both worlds. A touch UI doesn't mean it has to be restricted.

  • Jaxon Triggs

Who wanted HP anything anyway. Only a lobotomized chimpanzee would see them as the best maker of anything for their money. HP might as well say COMPAQ, they're the same kind of consumer garbage. They haven't made anything really amazing…like ever!

    R.I.P and good riddance

  • Isotonic

I like Apple products but seriously – give it a rest. This thread has had a refreshing lack of fanboi vs hater vitriol.

What do you mean Microsoft canceled the Courier? It was never a product, and never would have been one. They aren't capable of thinking outside of their only one good idea; the Start button. It's all downhill from here, nothing to see move along folks.

WebOS is perfect for a Tablet, HP could really make a go of this. I'm glad they bought Palm and not HTC. I love HP's pro netbook hardware but windows is a shit OS for low resource computers and light appliances.

  • Rowan

The 'restricted' OS is what the consumer wants. Easy Application discovery, purchase, use and removal. No viruses or Malware by design, no instalation of codecs, plugins, enablers, conflicting applications and slow downs etc. After 10 years of this crap the average Joe (read: not us) will jump at and fall in love with the iPad and it's ilk. If they see a device similar running windows, they'll run from it. That's the past.

  • Bob

Apple knows how to make shiny devices, they know very little about writing software programs. And besides developing a good search algorithm, takes years of hard work, just ask Microsoft and Yahoo.

  • Girish

would it have usb port , what will be price of it and when it will be available in us or indian market…?

  • http://www.siliconbeachtraining.co.uk/ Natasha

Interesting that this news came out at the same time we here Microsoft are also canceling the Courier…

    > genuine multitasking
    > battery life problems

Those 2 things go together. One thing HP will have to do with their v1.2 operating system is catch up to Apple's v4.0 which is a genuine mobile OS. Android v2.1 also has to catch up in responsiveness. And both need a C API pronto or they may as well not bother.

  • elche

No Bob, Ferrari handmake beautiful cars with custom made everything, rolex use only the best materials which cost alot.

Apple use the same computer hardware as everyone else but rap it in a well designed case, not a Ferrari or a Rolex just an overpriced underspecced PC.

  • Hamranhansenhansen

That is just ridiculous. Nexus One was a total and miserable failure. The majority are used by Google employees. They did not change the mobile market, they emphasized it was right as it is. The perception now is you need retail stores to sell to consumers thanks to Google's failure.

Apple has already been selling phones direct for 3 years. You buy iPad unlocked from Apple and enable a la carte data yourself with any GSM carrier. These things Google was going to innovate on are done. Apple sold 9 million iPhones and 6 million iPod touch last quarter and Google sold 80,000 Nexus One.

    Be real.

  • Huhster

Chrome OS is for cheap netbooks, Tablets will run Android which is completely touch based.

But if they now own Palm and Palm made WebOS then they do have people who now how to build OSs. Plus HP won't be selling the OS they will be selling closed in software/hardware products just like Apple.

I wouldn't be surprised if HP start putting WebOS on almost everything they make.

  • Hamranhansenhansen

The apps are no longer written with Web standards. Palm just started exposing a C API like iPhone and desktops and consoles. This is very necessary.

While Palm was making Web apps appear native, so was W3C. Every smartphone has that now. iPhone had that from the beginning, and exposed a C API in v2.0.

A key thing is HP will want to make it easy to port iPhone apps to Palm. It's too hard to port iPhone apps to Android or Blackberry because they only have Java. Whoever gets the second mobile C app platform up will be the Pepsi to iPhone's Coke.

If HP commits across their line, they can offer developers Apple-like opportunities. But they will have to work their asses off, get a lot of software built.

Further, the person you're correcting may not natively speak English, you bigot.

And there are no universal rules for English, so give it a rest.

  • Hamranhansenhansen

Android can only run baby Java apps. It's not going to compete with iPhone OS on tablets, where desktop and console class C apps are even more desired than on phones.

I guess it's fun to be an Android cheerleader since so many do it, but the technology matters. Most of the world's native app code is in C. A C app platform is one of iPhone's biggest innovations and is as yet unmatched by any other phone. Palm is just starting to roll out support for C apps.

No C apps on Android, just baby Java. No good for a full-size system where you want to port over desktop and console apps.

Palm's latest thing was C apps, right before it was revealed they'd sold like 65 phones in the last quarter. So Palm's OS could evolve into a full-size system.

No, what you're missing is that Apple is a software company. Only 10% or less of each Apple product is hardware. You buy the hardware just to get the software. OS X, iLife, Final Cut, Logic, these are all incredible.

Apple is not Rolex. I buy a new Mac every 3 years for $1200 while my buddy buys a new PC every 18 months for $700. I pay $250 for AppleCare, he pays $1000 for I-T help. My stuff works all the time, his stuff drives him crazy.

If you are using PC stuff because you think it is cheap, you missed a memo. The cost of PC's is what killed the market. Nobody wants to spend any more on Windows or I-T. Everybody wants off that ride.

  • http://startupmeme.com Sardar Mohkim Khan

I don't think it will kill the tablet – might very well kill Windows 7 that might have run HP Slate but not the device itself

  • Hamranhansenhansen

Yeah, consumer electronics is different from PC's. A CD/DVD has to just work or it goes back. No installing codecs or updating libraries or firmware. No viruses, no malware, no I-T burden.

iPhone OS has gone 3 years with zero viruses or malware or botnets, even though it has 100 million users who don't have I-T skills, most of them with always-on Internet, all jumping from Wi-Fi to Wi-Fi, 200,000 native apps, something like 5 billion installs.

Until another platform does that, the other vendors should STFU.

No, Windows is not a good OS. It sucks badly.

Mac has not OS either- it is actually BSD. What they have is the user interface, which is slick. But it is the BSD that brings the stability. Remember MacOS? It sucked more than VISTA. Or at least was close.

WebOS, Android are all Linux kernels. So developing one may help the other and in principle software can be ported without much trouble.

  • Scott

I think web os or android are their best bet, if they can control hardware and os they'll have the best chance of entering the market. We need to remember HP has a culture of invention like Apple does, they've just been under the yoke of Microsoft windows. Now is their chance to throw that off, an os of their own (or open) would allow them to innovate once again. I'm not saying it'll be easy but it's their only shot, who knows, maybe with the right product they'll get 10-15% of the market?

Software and hardware integration is the key. Watch for them to buy a chip design company too, if they're serious about this they will follow apples footsteps. They're pretty far behind thanks to following the PC hardware/software model (intel/MS) but now that they've been shown the way to proceed, all they have to do is be willing to play a really good game of catch up.

Now that HP has WebOS, they should release a slate using it. This will keep the general public busy. Then secretly they should upgrade the CPU in the Win7 Slate which will reduce battery life but will give us the power we need to run windows in that form factor. Another Toy slate is useless to me. Rename the thing the corporate slate and send me a copy. Despite not liking the closed nature of the Apple world, why the heck would I buy a WebOS slate over an iPad?

Hard to believe that it's less than a month since the iPad launch and already most of the objections that filled pre-launch discussions seem to have disappeared.

"I want a real OS," "It's just an overgrown iPod Touch," "I need something to get real work done," are now represented by the occasional commenter who's still looking for a product that most hardware companies don't seem willing and/or able to produce.

The big news here seems to be that after months of online debate over "real" OS vs. mobile touch OS, HP has validated Apple's approach.

If HP decides to go w/ GoogOS on its devices until which time they are in fact ready to deploy WebOS on Slate & other mob devices, it only serves to delay & dilute the effectiveness & adoption of WebOS to developers. Why not focus all effort towards making WebOS their cornerstone mobile product & screw all this other short-term grabs.

HP cannot serve 2 masters. If their GoogOS product becomes more popular (& there's a good chance it will because it has a huge head start) & gains a foothold over their WebOS offerings, the WebOS project will the get the shaft.

To give WebOS a true shot, they should give it ALL the love instead of short-term hedging w/ other OS's which they do not own. It does not show confidence in WebOS imo..

As for webOS not being a contender — do I hear some sour JuJu grapes there? A webOS tablet would certainly sell more than that did — and ever will.

As for Android, forget it, same with Chrome. That Verizon kicked the Nexus One to the curb shows that companies are waking up and not wanting to be Google's free beta testers and shadow co-developers. The Net's been filled with buzz about Google disallowing the Marketplace — which is key to Android gaining traction — on devices using the open source Android.

hp did the right thing buying Palm. They are now beholden to nobody — just like Apple.

Personally I would love for my "main" PC to have the same OS as my tablet/mobile PC; however, currently that would be Win7 and that uses too much CPU and kills batteries too quickly. Therefore, unless MS can make Win8 more touch friendly and easier on hardware MS will not transition to cross-hardware devices and WebOS, from what I've read from devs, is probably the best OS that can transition hardwire form factors from mobile to laptop and possibly even desktop. MeeGo is making this same claim, and personally I would like a future in which I can use the same software on multiple devices. . . but I'm simple ;)

I am thinking that if they put a giant battery in the thing like iPad, it might not be as important that the CPU drains the battery. Multitasking with shorter battery life might be a reasonable tradeoff, which it is not in a phone.

That being said, my Pre's battery life was not just bad, it was disgraceful. If I had actually used it as a phone instead of a development device, I would have had to return it.

I have noticed that since I got iPad, I have not used iPhone nearly as much. It's just so much nicer to browse the web, read email and run apps on the big screen, without the clumsiness of a laptop. And I can barely type on iphone's onscreen keyboard anymore. It would be nice if AT&T's iPad data plan could be expanded to include SMS.

Umm, you might want to actually look into WebOS before bashing it. It's essentially Linux with a custom UI. It also has a large and active homebrew community that Palm ENCOURAGES, even going so far as to thank them for their work and ideas in their CES presentation a few months ago.

Apple treats jailbreakers like criminals, Google politely looks the other way at homebrew Android modders, and Palm actively goes "Hey guys, what's up?" They even incorporated a handful of the patches and improvement to the UI the homebrew community made into the OS.

And a few weeks back some modders got X Server running on the Pre and managed to load OpenOffice.

And given that Palm allows sideloading, 3rd party app stores, development on any platform (even a webbased app maker, Aries), and allows open source apps to be distributed through their app store for free (unlike Apple), WebOS is pretty damned far from restricted…

I completely agree with you @Ben although I haven't used WebOS I've heard nothing remotely bad about the UI or user experience overall.

With Palm their issues have always been marketing (thanks to a small pocket book and a terrible Sprint exclusive deal) along with Hardware.

Is it totally inconceivable that HP can be successful selling their own closed and exclusive tablet with their own OS?

This notion that only happen can succeed doing this is absolutely ridiculous and shows Apple fanboy-ism at an all time high.

WebOS is actually quite a well thought out platform, that has GREAT promise, coder-wise and User-wise, were it distributed correctly. The real thing holding it back was Palm's business taking a nosedive, as well as their poor hardware builds. If it gets exposure on a tablet and has some minor reworked elements to function that way, there may be an iPad contender here. As long as WebOS is still alive, it was not 1.2 Billion wasted: Plain and Simple.

I'm not saying that a tablet running Windows Phone 7 would "kill" apple. I don't know why there is an obsession these days about killing off other products, because to me this particular market seems pretty open right now and I think that lots of things have a chance of catching on and doing quite well. I do think that Microsoft would do best by leveraging its strenghts here, which are in my mind, office integration, one note, xbox, zune, etc. If it can integrate all those things into a tablet, it may have a better chance of making inroads in the corporate market, which is where it's bread is buttered anyway. Well, OK, maybe they make two flavors…one a corporate without the Zune/Xbox integration and one a consumer one with the Xbox/Zune.

I think that device has a better shot than a full WIn7 device, mostly because it could operate with low power and lower software overhead and potentially match performance of the iPad while bringing features that would make their tablet very useful.

Don't be a hater dude. The iPad is nicely designed, but just because I'm throwing out ideas for Microsoft doesn't mean that I'm pissing on Steve Jobs or Apple and you need to get all defensive.

Uhh, no i haven't. It looks like a heavy piece of junk laptop with a swivel screen. If this is your idea of a revolutionary product then it is clearer to me how HP has managed to collect some money from the public all these years. This TM2 vs iPad doesn't even appear to be comparable, and its running Windows!

Windows 7 is a fairly good product (it had to be), because it was Microsoft's last chance to avoid massive abandonment of the PC platform and their products. How did they do it? They freaking copied a ton of OS X, worked it into their design, but obviously did NOT exceed the quality of the original. Argue it if you will, only MS fanboys and win developers could legitimately consider Windows 7 superior and more powerful than OS X, and Win 7 is not that well designed for a touch device like this swiveling tablet-brick thing from HP.

To compare the iPad to the AOL service is just sad, the numbers speak for themselves, and the devices are popular even among the most technical of all computer professionals. I feel confident the future will school your windows-centric reality as that junk slowly falls by the wayside in favor of better products. Its already happening.

Geeks are too smart for their own damn good. It's not about pleasing brainiacs so they can tinker with some product. It's about selling a product to consumers that they can actually use without getting a headache. I've said it over and over that only a fool would try to stick a full version of Windows 7 desktop on an Atom-powered slate. Steve Ballmer is a fool and HP was even worse for listening to him. I wonder if Steve Ballmer ever sat down and tried using the HP Slate for a couple of hours. Luckily HP did withdraw the HP Slate before they made complete asses of themselves when hardly anyone but a few geeks and some old, loyal Windows IT lapdogs would buy it.

Windows 7 belongs on a nice quad-processor desktop where it has room to breathe with plenty of RAM and processor cache. Putting Windows 7 on a slate is like Homer Simpson strangling Bart. These companies better stop listening to geeks demands of stuffing slim hand-held devices with the kitchen sink or they're all going to go out of business.

It ain't even about Windows 7 hating. It's just common sense that you can't sail the Royal Caribbean Independence of the Seas in a bathtub no matter what anyone says. HP caught it just in time to revise it's plans from an instant failure.

I think Dell is OK because they're running Android on a Tegra 2, so at least they're on the right track with a light OS and a power-efficient processor.

lol. I love these dolts who seem to confuse THEIR reality with REALITY.

MS copies +90%? Factual data, please. That’s the kind of bull-crap generalization you pick up from frequenting Linux forums — all crap and absolutely no substance.

Xbox vs. PS3 – Sans the horrific hardware problems (which is the reason why I won’t get one), the Xbox 360 came out over a year BEFORE the PS3 and *still* holds its weight. There goes your theory that MS doesn’t innovate or simply waits to copy “+90%”!

Windows 7 vs. OSX – Your personal opinion. The statistics show Windows 7 doing ridiculously well in the market (search for Windows 7 market share) in Google — that ought to get you started. Now, I know that means nothing to you since you know it all, but I thought I would interject a little bit of REALITY into your skewed perspective.

WinMobile vs. iPhone OS – We will all just have to wait and see how WP7 performs. As everyone knows, WM has been a horrible product up to this point where performance is concerned. As it stands, iPhone OS is definitely the winner here. Hey, one out of three ain’t bad for you so far, Jaxon!

Zune vs. iPod – It’s unfortunate that the Zune is such a great device, but despite how much I like it, it indeed doesn’t hold a candle to my iPod Touch. I love the interface of the Zune more than the iPod Touch, but that’s just a matter of personal preference. Once again, I’ll give you this one.

Bing vs. Google – COMPLETELY different. You’re just hating on Microsoft just to hate on them with this comparison. EVERY search engine vs. Google = lose right now! Yes, even if your precious Apple released a search engine, they would lose to Google, too. As it stands, Bing has more of a chance to succeed (that is, gain considerable market share over a period of time — it’s not going to happen overnight) in this area than most anyone else now. And you know why? Because Bing ISN’T a clone that copies that all-inclusive “+90%” figure you spat out. Bing is its own entity and there are many functions it simply outperforms Google with, such as its Travel and Shopping facets. Have you even visited Bing yet? Geez…

Courier vs. iPad – Oh yeah, because *that’s* a genius comparison: A popular product on the market vs. a rumored prototype that’s been canceled, even before it got off the ground. Yeah, no contest there! Look out, everyone! Jaxon Triggs has the lowdown on there being *NO CONTEST* between a product on the market and a rumored prototype that’s been canceled! /sarcasm

Takeaway: I’m all for people using what they love and for whatever reason. If you want an iPad because it’s cool, who cares? Not me — you do what you want. I’m also all for a little rivalry between companies and their minions, but some of you people are just absurdly delusional! I mean, MS is in the process of death? For Pete’s sake, man, what in the world are you smokin’!? Do you even realize all the products Microsoft has? Clearly not. As such, you obviously don’t pay attention to company earnings or market share percentages, do you? Even despite that, Microsoft has so much money and so much talent in-house and so many SUCCESSFUL products it develops that it would take an act of congress to make them go under. You’re so blinded by your ignorant hatred for something you don’t really seem to understand that I’m amazed you can even form coherent sentences stating your opinion.

But you just keep on going with that, Jaxon! Don’t let stupid statistics or reality deter you! Yeah, your opinion is clearly winning the day for you! Clearly…

  • iphonerulez

The Nexus One is officially dead in the U.S. since the Droid Incredible is taking it's place. For all intents and purposes the Nexus One sucked and I believe there is a hardware problem that couldn't be fixed and that's why it got terminated apart from the fact that nobody was buying them.

I don't know about this theory that Google had set out to sell only a few Nexus Ones, but if that is true then Google has a lot to learn about not wasting good money on a product it really doesn't intend to sell. They should have said what Apple says about AppleTV. Google should have said that the Nexus One was just a hobby.

I'm sorry, but the Nexus One is deader than Julius Caesar and will never rise again. Stick a fork in it. It's done. Totally buried by the hordes of new Android-powered smartphones.

I think the fallacy that HP has spotted, confirmed in spades with the launch of the iPad, is that a full-sized OS is a mistake in this market. Whether that ends up with WebOS (proprietary) or Android, or some mixture of the two, that's the engineering job that HP knows they have to do.

And thinking about things in a marketing way ("shipping units") is what happens after you have something cool to sell.

I didn't like that statement either. I mean like phones, tablets are a relatively cheap item. Computers just have one major OS that has 96% of the market because Windows gives people something they need weather it be specific programs that aren't on any other OS or cost, or something else. Mobile OS' don't do that yet. Sure Apple has over 100,000 apps but Google has over 40,000 and its catching on in popularity.

A new mobile OS can come out every year and as long is it gives people something different it'll catch on. The reason WebOS didn't catch on wasn't because of the OS but because the hardware and lack of apps. So if HP can get more people to write apps and in the next year they go from 2000 to say 20,000+ they'll be in good shape (especially if they're quality apps). Palm messed up but its not unfixable.

If HP/Palm brings out good quality phones, tablets and what ever else they have planned, people will buy them. The problem with Windows is the same problem with Windows Mobile 6x, if you don't skin the hell out of it its not finger friendly. HP has a pretty good chance to make this work.

People best knew HP for their printers, and calculators in the 80's (yes I know they did more than that I'm just saying most people knew them for printers and calculators). In the 90's when they started in computers people probably underestimated them and thought they'd fail but they didn't. Now they're one of the biggest computer companies in the world. Why underestimate them now?

  • Mara

Palm ability to write software is already proben with webOS.

If palm didnt write any desktop software for webOS was because they wanted to make their webOS devices completly autonomous and dependant only on the cloud.

That is the whole point of webOS. Thats why even the charger is wireless.

Depending on a desktop computer to use your mobile phone is the modern equivalent of selling computers with floppy disk drives.

    Dear people,

The whole point of buying Palm was to use, improve and invest a lot of money in webOS.

Apple wants to reboot the concept of personal computing.

Stop talking about android, thats only a limited and clunky present.

This is a reboot, in which even windows and mac OS X are in danger at home.

Apple wants that only very integrated and user centric OSs rule our homes. And only HP seems to have realised what Apple is trying to do.

    Thats why they bought webOS.

This is all about being the new king of the new age that the personal computer reboot will bring ~30 years after they were born.

You really think it was WebOS that made the Pre and Pixi fail? It was the hardware. The first Palms from Sprint had hardware issues and they got pretty much fixed, but still the Pre is under powered and a lot of people can't get over the small keyboard. The lack of a large number of apps hurt too, but that can be fixed. WebOS is the best mobile OS out there. It multitasks better than any OS, its synergy is awesome and its easy to use.

HP has a great chance with WebOS. They make good hardware and HP is a strong name. Sure there is a chance that WebOS devices will still fail, but Apple doesn't always make popular devices. Hell if they weren't the first on the market with the iphone and say Palm brought out a top notch WebOS phone, it may be the iphone people make fun of (Well people still make fun of the iphone). If some other tablet came out before the ipad that people liked articles would be written asking "Can the ipad be the _______ killer". Apple has just been quick getting products out. Their the "hot" thing for the moment, but that moment can be over at any time.

Didn't you read in my email that the HP US is still in production? And I even gave you a link, those things you click on that lead you to another web page that you can read also.

    Wow, another moron.

When you're posting on a public forum, it's best not to parade your ignorance.

The stock market views HP as an IT solutions company. That means – for those like you who get all your world knowledge from blogs – networking, hardware and software.

One HP SuperDome 2 server, in its most basic configuration brings in a cool $60,000 + to HP. A reasonably loaded one brings upwards of $500,000. A top end machine can easily pull in a cool million smackeroos. That's a whole lot of iphones that apple has to sell to bring in the same amount of moolah.

And, Mike, these HP SuperDome machines run on HP-UX, which is an operating system that HP engineers develop, and HP sales folks sell.

Which company do you know of that makes operating systems that run million dollar machines?

I agree with you 100%. I want to add that everyone keeps saying the iPad has the apps and WebOS does not so it'll fail. There really aren't that many apps for the iPad yet and the iPhone apps run kinda shitty on the iPad. Me, I could care less for apps, that's what my iPhone is for. I need a tablet to show my clients their websites I've designed for them during a meeting. I need a device that will show them the full web which the Pad does not.

    Crazy comment distractions.

When ever an article appears recently regarding Mobile computing, whether smartphones or tablets, and in this case HP and WebOS, immediately Microsoft supporters go off the track and start talking about "desktop" Windows and lame Windows 7mobile.

Maybe it's the mention of Google Android, Google Chrome, MeeGo from Intel/Nokia and now WebOS – all Linux-based coincidentally, that these Microsofties go crazy and look for an inane unreason to stump their favourite – popular but poor quality/weak security software.

    It is amazing!

People have strange ideas about Xerox and Apple. Xerox granted Apple engineers three days of access to the PARC facilities in return for the option to buy 100,000 shares of Apple at the pre-IPO price of $10 a share. When Apple went public, it generated more capital than any IPO since Ford Motor Company in 1956 and instantly created more millionaires than any company in history. I agree. I am really really frustrated with this news. I have been waiting for a tablet platform that I can run all my Windows office apps on – natively – and browse the web without BS limitations. I love what Apple has done with the iPad form factor. I hate the typical Apple control the market BS they have been so good at hanging Microsoft with.

Geepers, does no one at TechCrunch know anything about Android or WebOS?

OK, here is the downlow…Red Hat is not Linux, Fedora is not Linux, Ubuntu is not Linux, Slackware is not Linux, SuSE is not Linux…According to Linus Torvolds, the only thing that *is* Linux is the Kernel. Everything else is put on top of Linux.

So how does this relate to Android and/or WebOS?

Both also sit on top of a Linux Kernel. Therefor both are as much Linux as all of the other Distributions above are. The only difference is that Google and Palm have not been marketing their Distributions as Linux because Microsoft attacks anyone that uses the world Linux since they know that Linux is there #1 competitor.

  • Tom D

I think that you have got it right, in that HP probably saw the responsiveness and battery life of the iPad and determined that the hardware and software approach of the proposed Slate would leave it well behind in potential users perceptions and so dropped it. If anything is going to be an iPad killer, it's going to have to have a real platform, and not a WebOS. If you are trying to compete with exactly the same product (or a little for the worse), you're not going to get the other part of the marketshare that DOESN'T want an iPad because of its limited OS. Microsoft just needs to put Win Phone 7 on a snapdragon or Tegra 2 powered slate without the phone stack…that I would be interested in, especially if it still had the office integration and they integrated one-note or something similar.
MSFT needs to get over the fear of screwing partners in the mobile space and just launch it's own products, because ultimately it won't have any partners anyway with Android being used by them all.
