Screw You, Benioff
Michael Arrington
Apr 6, 2010

It’s late Tuesday evening and the TechCrunch office is mostly deserted. I was finishing off a few things and preparing for tomorrow when Steve Gillmor, my friend, mentor and the founding editor of TechCrunchIT walks in.

“I’ve got some news and I had to talk to you in person about it.”

Damnit. I knew right then I wouldn’t like the “news.” And sure enough, he’s taken another job. Starting monday he’ll be on the senior team (senior as in high level, not as in old) at Salesforce. Founder Marc Benioff recruited him directly.

“You bastard.” (I tend to take these things personally)

Now I know why Benioff has been writing regular guest posts for us. It’s because he’s feeling guilty over stealing Steve from us, obviously.

Of course I’m also happy for Steve, and the new job is a terrific opportunity. And graciously Steve has agreed to continue writing every week or so for us, and of course you can follow him on Twitter at @stevegillmor. In some ways things will remain the same with us and Steve.

But it’s still a sad day at TechCrunch. I was listening to Steve on the Gillmor Gang long before I ever started TechCrunch. And I miss the old days when Steve, Dave Winer and I used to meet for breakfast in Burlingame most weekends.

You can read all of Steve’s posts on TechCrunchIT over the years here. He’s been a technology journalist for something like 30 years, back almost to the beginning of, well, tech reporting. And I’m not exaggerating when I say that Steve has forgotten more things than I’ll ever learn.

Steve doesn’t bother much with details, he goes right at the big trends. And he’s usually right. Way before most other people are. Controversial? Yes. Long winded? Yep. Occasionally non linear in his thinking? Understatement. But he’s also brilliant, and he’s always guided me towards rightness.

We recorded a short exit interview video for posterity. Good luck, Steve. I hope to see you around the office regularly.

Salesforce is lucky to have Steve! I hope he is not going to be behind a stealth wall, his public insights are always valuable, particularly in the sector for which he will be supporting Benioff’s expanding vision, the future of media.

    I am disturbed

  • Patrick

thank god we won’t have to read as many of his terribly-written, incoherent posts that throw a bunch of shit at the wall and hope that something sticks

  • Heather Harde

Aside from the selfish fact that Steve has been an amazing mentor to Michael, me and the rest of the TechCrunch team, the truth is that he sees the future. He calls the big trends early and often.

I’ve often referred to Steve as The New Yorker of the blogosphere, and though some of you fight his complex story development, the truth is he loves to challenge you, and I appreciate that he makes me think. Steve’s Socratic method is like a great game of chess.

Sad to see a good friend go, but special opportunities are rare, and I’m happy that we’ll continue to have Steve’s support and leadership voice on TechCrunch.

Big Congrats to Steve. Well deserved!

In terms of talent who won? This now gives TechCrunch an opening to find new talent, new perspective. And for SalesForce, where is the value add?

Mr. Gillmor, enjoy sleepless nights building your new reputation.

I totally agree with what Heather Harde says about Steve. He always challenges me and almost always is way ahead of me in seeing new trends and things happening in the industry.

Salesforce is doing a ton of stuff very few people realize. When I was there recently talking about Chatter with an engineer there he said that their early tests were showing far better results than they expected “it’s viral like Ebola” was what he told me.

It’ll be interesting to see what Steve does, I’ll be watching.

The guy got a real job.
He made the best decision in my opinion.

TC is just a marketing vehicle for the big 3 (Apple, google, facebook and all related companies.

Every press release is copy/pasted in this blog and now and then TC tries to make an own article.
(like the IPAD study this weekend)

And oh well, if one of the guys accepts a personal present they get fired.

the advertisers should pay the boss, not give
away laptops to the kids working at TC.

    good luck TC.

While I personally would not have liked that question aimed at me. This was hilarious and a great start to my day. Thanks!

    Congrats Steve Gillmor!

hehe! that was a serious way to start the post. Really got my attention ;)

  • Thank you

I agree with @Patrick. Also, it will be interesting to see how well Steve does at a real job, where concrete answers are required and concrete actions must be taken, as opposed to a bunch of hand-waving and term-tossing gobbledygook to a bunch of people (Arrington, for example) who have no technical background, and who claim that they “learn” from guys like this (God help us).

All the above notwithstanding, I wish Steve the best of luck in his new position.

  • http://amyloo.com Amyloo

All the best, Steve. Props to Benioff, too, for being open to supporting an inside public person. Thinking Scoble inside Microsoft, who must have bit his tongue about certain things but seemed fairly free to have his own opinions.

  • Brian

As someone who has Chatter installed in our org I can tell you its a become a massive time suck us. First couple of days it was active and it use has massively slowed down — for us at least.

  • http://www.breadmarket.co.uk mark

haha, he was head hunted and recruited by the CEO himself! he’s gotta be proud of that. Not to worry, he probably will be able to drop in a few guest posts, after all, Benioff himself finds time for that!
