Hitwise says Facebook Most Popular U.S. Site
Michael Arrington
Mar 15, 2010

New data released from analytics service Hitwise today names Facebook the largest website in the U.S. with 7.07% of all U.S. visits. Google is second at 7.03%. Yahoo Mail is third with 3.8% and Yahoo is fourth at 3.67% (if you combined both Yahoo properties, and I’m not sure why they don’t, Yahoo would be first). YouTube (a Google property) is fifst with 2.14%.

This is the first time Hitwise has named Facebook the top site in the U.S. Comscore still ranks Google the top site by reach at 81% of the U.S. population. Facebook, at 53%, is still behind Google, Yahoo and Microsoft sites in the U.S., according to the most recent Comscore data from February 2010.

“Google is second” you dont hear that very often -

  • Drew

    Really? Youtube is “fifst” ?

  • Mark

Did you really just write “fifst”?

  • douche

That can’t be right. Everybody knows it’s foursquare

  • http://www.robertbasil.com Robert Basil

So much for spell check huh?

  • toddq138

If they included the youtube traffic as part of google then google would be #1 by at least a whole percentage point.

  • Ashish

“fifst”.. looks like Techcrunch spellchecker is not working :)

  • LOL

Hitwise played you well. They intentionally broke apart Google and Yahoo properties to show FB as #1, knowing that you will reliably “report” it and give them some buzz

  • http://www.backtype.com/MichaelADeBose Michael A. De Bose

Based on your own logic, if you combine Google and Youtube, then Google is first.

i am sooo tired of hearing about facebook. i mean, really, what is so innovative about that site? to me, it just seems like a customized message board. what is the big deal? its a total time waster.

  • Tundey

They dont combine Yahoo Mail and Yahoo perhaps because it’s less sexy to say “Yahoo is top site” than to say “Facebook is top site”. They didn’t break out gmail traffic from google figures, right?

You can’t combine Google and YouTube because YouTube isn’t really marketed as part of Google.

  • http://www.brianshall.com Brian S Hall

I agree. Splitting up Yahoo, making Facebook #1 means this will get a lot of buzz it otherwise wouldn’t if they had said: Google 1 (with Youtube), Yahoo 2, Facebook 3.

Something important to mention is the time people actually spend on each site, i bet people spend more time in FCBK than they do at the GOOG blank page (same could be said of TouTube). also the social networking is getting bigger and i don’t know how much can GOOG grow from this point.

… but its just a comparison of domain.

    Domain: http://www.facebook.com – 7.07%
    Domain: http://www.google.com – 7.03%

    Now you understand?! ;)

This report is skewed and full of spin by HitWise’s own data!

Google (with 7.03% of US traffic) owns YouTube (who has 2.14%), so if you add their traffic together you get Google with 9.17%.

Yahoo (3.67%) plus Yahoo Mail (3.8%) means that Yahoo has 7.47%.

Both Google and Yahoo are ahead of Facebook who has 7.07% of US traffic.

Facebook is still third…for now. ;-)

I would like to know if facebook offer info that show where people spend their time in the site

  • Tim

There is nothing wrong with the comparison they drew. It’s a pure comparison of traffic to domains, not combined business properties. facebook.com gets more traffic in the US than google.com. You can’t look at that data and make a call on which business receives more traffic, because it’s only two domains in isolation.

  • Tim

I should clarify, that data only represents traffic originating from the US region. It doesn’t take into account international traffic hitting those domains.

  • http://www.andreas-nisch.de/2010/03/15/facebook-1-visited-us-site/ andreas-nisch.DE » Blog Archive » Facebook #1 visited US site
  • Alex

Seems strange to me to ding this comparison by bringing up YouTube.

How about all other domains that use FB Connect…and then you have to talk about Google syndication, OpenID and so on. Apples to apples is impossible if you look at it that way.

Is it material that Facebook.com got more traffic than Google.com last month? Absolutely. Put the 12 month trends side by side. Bottom line the number 1 site for last 12 months basically flatlined while Facebook.com doubled and took the lead. Huge deal.

Completely agree with your assessment of it. Why they didn’t group the companies together as one is beyond me.

Although i guess they are grading individual websites, NOT companies that own a bunch of websites.
