Congratulations Crunchies Winners! Facebook Takes Best Overall For The Hat Trick
Jason Kincaid
Jan 8, 2010

This year’s third annual Crunchies Awards have just concluded, and we’re happy to say that it was an overwhelming success. For those that weren’t watching, we’ve included the list of nominees and winners below. Our most sincere congratulations to the winners and to all of the nominees as well. It was an incredibly tight race for many of the categories, and it’s safe to say that everyone on this list is at the top of their field.

We’d like to take a moment to point out Facebook’s win for “Best Overall Startup Or Product”, which marks the third year in a row that the company has taken home the top prize. Facebook continues to innovate and deploy features at an impressive rate while still showing incredible growth. Ours hats go off to you.

Guys…seriously Facebook is not a startup. I hate to break it to you but they are worth more than a lot of “public” companies. This is ridiculous that they are even in the conversation of being astartup. Seriously a company with 300M users – more than 8 canada’s (you said it first arrington) is a startup?! C’mon Mike, what is the purpose of the crunchies anyway?
Anyhow, congrats to facebook on being an amazing story. You just aren’t a startup anymore. It’s weird seeing Zuckerberg on the stage..he doesn’t belong. He’s already well past receiving a “startup” award.

Just got back from the Crunchies.
Best internet app, Dropbox, definitely was most deserved. Like everyone felt, awarding facebook (Best overall Startup) was little odd! In other awards, I guess the controversy helped Mark Pincus take home the award of best CEO, else I thought Tony Hsieh (Zappos) should’ve been the one!

  • Michael

    Congratulations to all winners.

Some winners seem a little odd to me (e.g. Google Docs in Enterprise), but that’s probably what you get when you let the audience vote (mainly consisting of consumers).

Same for Facebook, considering votes of a 300M user base in the decision making gives you “popularity” not “quality” (and i would consider “best” being “best quality”, even if just recognized by a small audience).

However, nothing we didn’t knew before and it was an entertaining piece. Personally i would like to see the rules for the Crunchies to be a little more like the one of the Oscars (5,000 nominated voters out of the industry), but it is what it is. This way we will probably never see and underdog win, which makes it a little more boring than it could be.

  • http://cybersweetness.com Gebadia Smith

I know what does it say about the web when Mark Pincus is CEO of the year… kind of really a sad commentary on the ethics online…

  • Justin Van Winkle

Wikipedia says a startup is “a company with a limited operating history. These companies, generally newly created, are in a phase of development and research for markets. ”

Since this is kindof an award for startups and startup related things it makes perfect sense that Facebook (6 years old, worth more than the GDP of *most* countries), Google (10 years old, worth more than the GDP of Israel or Singapore), and Microsoft (30 years old, worth more than the GDP of Finland) would win.

  • dlkf

If the vote is on achievements since they started and not necessarily 2009, FB is great. But it was not a startup during 2009.
I guess you agree that a company with a campus and hundreds of millions $ funding can be hardly called startup anymore.
(how do you define a startup? max funding? not older than two years? 5 years? voters may remember FB start, but it was not a start-up during 2009 )

I don’t think Facebook should have one the ‘Best Startup of the Year’ for 2 reasons. Firstly, it wasn’t a startup 2009, it was around before. And secondly, I am seeing so many people move away from it. It is beginning to go the way of MySpace. I prefer to split Facebook’s functionality into the two useful bits: quick small updates (I now use Twitter), and contact details (I now use LinkedIn).

  • London Eye

The purpose of the Crunchies, like all awards ceremonies, is to maintain hierarchical status-quo through a public display and celebration of power. Everything peripheral to that is pomp and anecdote.

I have a lot of respect for Facebook and believe they deserve plenty of awards. Personally I don’t think it makes a lot of sense to have FB competing with true startups that have 1/100 the enterprise value and 1/10 the number of employees or registered users, but that’s similar to the way the Oscars only recognize one Best Picture when comedies, dramas, action pics, etc. are truly apples and oranges. Those who organize the awards have the right to decide how to categorize things.

As a former MySpacer, I have to disagree with the post above that FB is destined to go the way of MS (although I’m rooting for a turnaround). FB has become an essential communication tool the way email used to be, and appeals to vast range of ages — whereas MS has mostly been targeted at young consumers of pop culture. FB has blown away so many other services because it swallows up email, IM, photo sharing, event invitations, microblogging, social bookmarking, news bookmarking, and on and on…

  • Max

After all the criticism TechCrunch slammed at Mark Pincus in 2009, he wins Crunchies’ CEO of the Year Award? Is this an admission that the criticism went too far? I feel like I’m missing something…

  • http://www.twitter.com/willpao Will

You realize people vote for who wins. Michael Arrington isn’t David Stern. He’s not a dictator.

  • http://www.twitter.com/willpao Will

Mr. Van Winkle, I think we can agree that these countries are much older than any of the companies you mentioned. Therefore, the phrase “limited operating history” applies. Let’s look at the other part of the definition. “Phase of development and research for markets.” Yes, I think we can safely say that Google et. all are in a phase of developtment. Can we say the same of Finland?

  • http://www.twitter.com/willpao Will

Typo: “Development.” When is Techcrunch adding the ability the edit a post 60 seconds after you post it? Mahalo (oddly absent from the crunchies) lets you do this. Take a page out of your TC 50 partner’s book. Sigh… we all know JCal is the brains in your business relationship. If your partnership is like John and Paul’s, then JCal is no doubt “the brains” (John). Arrington is definitely Paul. All he writes are “silly love songs.” While Jason builds things of lasting value like Mahalo Answers, all Arrington does is write posts about being spat on and trying to escape from his fictitious stalker concocted to drive up pageviews….like Paul wasting away on another catchy yet pointless pop song.

There was a period of time last year when I really worried about Arrington’s sanity. He seemed willing to write anything…ANYTHING…to get a pageview. I was waiting for a post with the title “Someone put a giant dead horse in my bed while I was sleeping yesterday”

  • Number One Blog Poster Ever Ever

I have just nominated and awarded myself the #1 blog poster of the universe award. Kudos to myself for being so awesome. I’d like to thank myself for being #1. I rawk. Bow before me.

I have decided to do you all a great service by nominating and awarding you all with the runner up prize of #2 blog posters of the universe.

You’re all pretty good too because you took the time to admit that I am #1 and very, very kewl. You more less rawk… almost as much as me.

Thank you… (to me) for being #1

    Your Welcome (me)

    Anytime Me, Anytime

It’s official, I have been nominated and elected the kewelest person… EVUR!

  • Seriously you guys

So since these awards have begun, Facebook gets nominated as best start up 3/3 times? 2/3 times would be ridiculous… 3/3 times is … ughh … Insane?

I think Wal-Mart should have took best start up. I mean, they sell computers… OVER THE INTERNET EVEN, right? I don’t remember them being around when I was a kid. That makes them a start up.

    Yea hugh, it does tooooo.

    Infinity +1… HA!

On the other hand, maybe we could make human greed the best start up. I mean we have only been crawling around on this big rock for a few thousand years now. Face it, when you want to make money, turn to human greed to get the job done. The brain is a big computer that makes computers that get on the internet. Now I understand why they give out monkeys with clubs as awards.

  • Sir Robin The Not-Quite-So-Brave-As-Sir-Lancelot

Pincus for CEO? Yeah, I play the mafia wars, and they were begging for votes in-game, so I guess Zynga is riding the coattails of Facebook.

If you’d like to include a truly ‘social’ game for next year, look into Castle Age on FB. It relies on interaction with other players much more than the other games I have played.

I guess I’m just wiped out complaining about Pincus and Zynga. After the debacle that their games have become, I don’t see how he managed to pull it off (except that Mafia Wars and Farmville have a combined daily use closing in on 10 million).

And, Bing as a new startup? They poached their own code and data from MSN to create Bing. That’s not NEW, it’s a revamp. That’s like saying Vista was a startup, or XP, or even W7. Come on!

  • Sindy

To bad you can’t take back FARMVILLE’s Crunchie Award! They surely don’t deserve it…but then…the award wasn’t for responding to players’ concerns, or fixing bugs in the application. Maybe you should have a catagory for Best Customer Relations…..don’t even try for that one ZYNGA!!!!!!!!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Graham_Kelly/663826900 Graham Kelly

How Pincus got the best CEO award I have no idea.He honestly has no idea of how to run a long term company.

He has publicly admitted to committing cyber-crimes encouraging his users to infect their PCs, the Zynga customer services leave a lot to be desired – send them a support message and all they do is paste a script back to you from notepad, that either makes NO sense or bears no relevance to the question, or they just dont answer at all.

They kill popular games such as My Heroes Ability which had hundreds of thousands of players, but keep their less popular games such as Heroes vs Villains – wheres the sense in that?

They make changes to games which NO long time user likes, like removing the constant flow of tourists in Roller Coaster Kingdom

Finally, Mark only cares about money rather than a good gaming experience. Everything they add to a game these days all cost the players money if they want to use it, like the new fish on fishworld, 80% of new items they add to farmville, The Cuba section in Mafia Wars requires you to pay to complete achievements and missions.

Overall – Zynga just plain suck and I can’t see them being around for much longer – better companies like Playfish, RockYou and Watercooler Inc. will create better apps, and more importantly they actually have staff who listen to their users and reply to all messages.

if you want a good game to play, Kingdoms of Camelot is the best new startup – by Watercooler Inc. First released november 2009, it now has well over 500k users and rapidly increasing.

yeah exactly my thought. It was the same in ALL of their games.

but combined daily use of 10 mil? don’t you mean 100 mil people with nothing better to do? farmville has at least 60m players lol – probably most multis used for glitching and gifting

Zynga (should be stynka) just plain sux.
    Their customer support is pathetic.
Read the blogs and forums, even their own.
They are filled with complaints yet they ignore them and keep adding new ways for people to spend money on games that do not work.
They are very soon to be only history.
