Twitter Hacked, Defaced By "Iranian Cyber Army"
Michael Arrington
Dec 17, 2009

We’ve received multiple tips right around 10 pm that Twitter was hacked and defaced with the message below. The site was offline for a while.

We’re looking into this and awaiting on a response from Twitter.

The message read:

Iranian Cyber Army

THIS SITE HAS BEEN HACKED BY IRANIAN CYBER ARMY

iRANiAN.CYBER.ARMY@GMAIL.COM

U.S.A. Think They Controlling And Managing Internet By Their Access, But THey Don’t, We Control And Manage Internet By Our Power, So Do Not Try To Stimulation Iranian Peoples To….

NOW WHICH COUNTRY IN EMBARGO LIST? IRAN? USA?
WE PUSH THEM IN EMBARGO LIST ;)
Take Care.

Update: – We have just found out that the same defacement is appearing at at least one other site, mawjcamp.org. We are not able to see what was at this domain before, but it is now displaying the same defacement that Twitter was only a few minutes ago.

Twitter does not have the best record with security issues. We have previously covered a number of incidents, and as recently as two months ago their web servers were misconfigured to reveal detailed internal network information. We also previously wrote about their admin interface having a password of ‘password’ on one account, and the well-known Twitter doc incident. It was hoped that with the hiring of a new COO, Dick Costolo, as well as a number of other high-level engineers, including security experts, that Twitter had grown out of the phase of being vulnerable to security incidents on such a large scale.

We do not know a lot about the group claiming responsibility for the attack as we haven’t heard their name before and they do not show up in any defacement mirrors or security sites. Similar Iranian groups were active during the election campaign in that country. We have emailed the group (they were kind enough to leave an address on the defacement) for a comment (also added them on Gchat – worth a shot).

Update 2.: Twitter.com is down, status.twitter.com is down. Some tweets are getting through at the moment because parts of the API are up. Search also seems to be working. The Firehose is up – Tweets are coming in from FriendFeed (all those tweets about ‘is twitter down’ are from third-party sites)

Update 3.: It is suggested that if you use the same password on your Twitter account with other accounts, now would be a good time to change your password on those other accounts.

Update 4.: There is a history between Iran and Twitter. It was well noted and covered in the media that Twitter was used as a tool during the Iranian election protests. The US government actually intervened to assure that Twitter was available to the protestors in Tehran and around the country. This attack may be an act of reprisal from groups who were not happy with the role that Twitter played during the protests.

Update 5.: There is speculation at the moment that this may be a DNS redirect, which means that the Twitter.com domain has been redirected to the defacement page. This doesn’t explain why some sub-domains are down, while others are currently still alive (such as search)

Update 6.: Twitter.com is back. The company updated its status blog saying: “Twitter’s DNS records were temporarily compromised but have now been fixed. We are looking into the underlying cause and will update with more information soon.”

Update 7.: Twitter’s Platform Lead engineer Alex Payne has a funnier update on the current status

Update 8.: Google was showing the below briefly when doing a search for Twitter (thanks Chris). The translation from Farsi/Persian reads:

“In the name of God, As an Iranian this is a reaction to Twitter’s interference sly which was U.S. authorities ordered in the internal affairs of my country…”

Update 9.: Biz Stone blogged:

As we tweeted a bit ago, Twitter’s DNS records were temporarily compromised tonight but have now been fixed. As some noticed, Twitter.com was redirected for a while but API and platform applications were working. We will update with more information and details once we’ve investigated more fully.

As will we.

Same thing here. Twitter seems to be resolving the problem, because it now just doesn’t load the site.

I’ve ran into some other sites hacked by the Iranian defenders. I remember http://tysiphonehelp.com/ being hacked during the Iran Election and showing an Iranian image.
Also, http://mowjcamp.com/ has been hacked too.

Incase you didn’t know, Fred (the YouTube star) was hacked yesterday, along with sxephil (also YouTube star).

Is it just a coincidence that lots of hackings have happened within the past two days?
    You decide.

That’s what you get when you try to ‘stimulate’ the Iraninan people. Ingrates.

Getting a good laugh at everyone panicking here because Twitter is down (seriously people, go and start a real conversation) and the conspiracy theorists who come out of the woodwork. This of course will be topped by people tweeting how bad a service Twitter is when it’s back up.

We do have to be careful though because if it’s down too long some people might go outside, and even look up, and then they’ll realise THERE’A GIANT BALL OF FIRE IN THE SKY DURING THE DAY, DEAR JEBUS, NO!

Obviously, you have no experience running a business and or you don’t have any imagination what a business competitor is willing to do in this day and age to get an edge.

    @Microsoft
First of all, I don’t use Twitter. Second of all, I have been blasting Leena for being a Twitter’s bitch, so you know I am not a Twitter user. Having said that, I wouldn’t rule out Facebook as the one behind the multiple attacks.

The United States needs cyber security protection for its web infrastructure now, both international, and domestic.

Based on the bluehost page, and the intermittent downtime (i’ts not down, just hammered enough to time out), it’s very likely this is a DNS/NS/Domain based hack and the back end remains uncompromised but inaccessible to anyone or any api that uses the hostnames twitter.com in them.
This would explain why some tweets are still making it through as well.

While it’s a good idea to keep a separate password (and change it routinely), I think people are missing the DNS connection.

This is just a DNS hack:

    macbook:Desktop mkr$ host twitter.com

Database last updated on 18-Dec-2009 01:50:52 EST.

    twitter.com has address 66.147.242.88
    twitter.com mail is handled by 10 aspmx.l.google.com.
    twitter.com mail is handled by 20 alt1.aspmx.l.google.com.

What is twitter’s public facing IP? Currently twitter.com is going to 66.147.242.88

    Resolve Host: box488.bluehost.com
    IP Address: 66.147.242.88

So notify bluehost to have that account turned off, first of all.. then check into DNS hacks — this was most likely JUST a redirect and not a server/back end breach.

FTA: “It is suggested that if you use the same password on your Twitter account with other accounts, now would be a good time to change your password on those other accounts.”

If Twitter is following security best practices they should be salting and hashing passwords so that the stored password is irreversible and useless in it’s hashed form.

Then again, since Twitter is closed source, who knows what they’re doing.

This is definitely a dns hijack, status.twitter.com is hosted on tumblr, but points to the same ip address as twitter.com, which currently is: 74.217.128.160

With over 100 MIl in funding they could have hired a consultant for 6-9 months to over all the security and scalability of the application, not a hard thing to do.

The thing as long as twitter keeps on using RoR (Ruby on Rails) it will encounter the scalability issues. Ruby is fast but the bitch can’t scale.

They should do an overall of their architecture with entire PHP or PHP+ Python.

    It reads the following:

این سایت به عنوان هشدار هک می شود

I wonder why I don’t hear about these frequent attacks on otherwise big websites… And I know the others are under microscopic eyes too. Facebook is hated by many due to the fact that they are sometimes snobbish , and so is Google of late. Maybe Twitter needs to then realise finally that making so much money means not only that they will pay more tax, but that they will pay more attention to security details. Luckily for now, no-one will really feel toooo threatened if someone hacks their Twitter a/c bcz there isn’t much in there!

A first official word from Twitter (still nothing on their home page) came as a tweet from @twitterapi about half an hour ago: “We are working on the reported issue and will provide more details as we have them and are able to. Thanks for your patience ^RS”. Says nothing, either they don’t know yet or they have to figure out how to present the unpleasant facts.
The call to go and replace your passwords sounds like a lot of media-hysteria to me. It surely wouldn’t hurt, and I am not saying that attackers did not hack into Twitter’s database or whatever Twitter uses for identity management (I don’t know that). But, as a software architect who specializes in security of websites, I can tell you that there is still some way between managing to deface the home page and breaking into the database tables themselves.
Moreover, there are some claims it was DNS redirect/DNS cache poisoning, see reaction above (http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/12/17/twitter-reportedly-hacked-by-iranian-cyber-army/#comment-3163329).
So I guess we have to wait for the morning to know more details. Surely, the Twitter guys in SF won’t get much sleep tonight.

If the issue is reportedly due to a DNS compromise, then no user data should have been compromised. However if anything automatically sent data to the twitter domain it is possible to have been captured by the hackers.

For example the login screens do not use any kind of SSL, so anything sent would have been in plain text.

This could have easily been far worse with a proper spoofed main site. Lucky these guys are stupid.

meh Your password and information is safe. Redirecting using a DNS hack is nothing new nor gains access to your information. Considering they redirected it to a moronic “cyber army” website instead of doing what (honestly) I would of done which is make a duplicate site and store passwords. This wasn’t done by the iranian cyber army. These kind of things have been happening for years and it’s always the iranians, or iraqi’s or chinese. It’s retarded. In almost every situation its some kid in their parents basement that found an exploit and said “HAH I TOOK DOWN TWITTER I AM 1337!”

I had a great laugh when I saw this. Not because of the fact it was another person claiming to be a cyber army, but by the extreme fear people have when a DNS exploit is found and it redirects to this type of page. IF there was a cyber army in any country they wouldn’t waste their time doing this kind of childish crap. They’d hit harder targets. twitter is nothing compaired to places a real and actual INTELLIGENT hacker could actually hit.

“We have just found out that the same defacement is appearing at at least one other site, mawjcamp.org. We are not able to see what was at this domain before, but it is now displaying the same defacement that Twitter was only a few minutes ago.”

mowjcamp.org is a iranian green movment news site.
it includes articles and news about protests against iran’s dictator regime and releases opposition leaders messages.

Twitter and Mowcamp hacking is done by iran’s dictator regime, cos they’re angry that iranians used twitter to spread after election news worldwide.

Hacking is not done by iranian ppl, don’t mistake ppl with regime.

Pretty strange from a hacker’s view. There’s a rumor that says that IT companies working in Iran, did block the internet a few weeks ago on Iranian Gov injonction might be a reason for this attack.

    Hi,
“Iranian Cyber Army” is a not a group of iranian hackers but a part of an governmental organization.
in 2005 iran started a huge set of projects in “iran’s national passive defense organization”.
collecting data , buying exploits and finding points of vulnerability in major sites are the main activitied of iran’s national passive defense organization in cyber space.
twitter.com played an effective role in keeping people connected during 2009 Iranian election protests, so it become a target.

If he had exposed all the details including password the next minute he hacked then it’s not a friendly hack..instead he allowed twitter to fix these exploits..”

If they are a group associated with IRG, why would they want to expose details to the public? They want to trace people to arrest them, they don’t care about exposing their emails or whatever to the public.

here is the translation of the text in the picture:

red text: O Hossein, peace be upon him

referring to Imam Hossein, a key figure in Islam and the 3rd Imam of Shiites. Today is the first day of the Islamic month of Moharram, second only to the month of Ramadan in holiness. The first ten days of Moharram, daheyeh Moharram, are a period of mourning culminating in Ashura, December 27, which is the commemoration of Hossein’s martyrdom in 680 AD.

blue text: Then surely Hezbollah shall be triumphant.

Hezbollah in this case does not necessarily refer to the Lebanese Hezbollah and is probably used in the more generic sense of ‘party of Allah,’ even though this Arabic text does appear at the top of the official yellow flag of the Lebanese Hezbollah

As an Iranian I should say although they say so, the hackers are not representatives of Iranian people. Iranians are thankful to twitter and facebook that let the world hear what’s going on in the country.
As it says in that picture the hackers are part of the same militia group that beats and rapes and kills people on the streets. They explicitly say they are followers of the Supreme Leader (current dictator of Iran).

This “Cyber Army” is the cybernetic part of that militia group that tries to control the Internet in Iran, they are responsible for tracking (arresting and later torturing) blog writers, censoring and filtering information and as you see in this case hacking websites that may help protesters.

  • http://www.boticca.com Kiyan Foroughi

While visiting a site with up to date info I was attacked by the nastiest virus I have ever seen. My virus protection never saw it and could not remove it even using their tech support. It blocked access to the internet except for their site, shut off all virus protection or firewalls, would not let me load any programs via the CD/DVD drive, and could not be Bypassed. I had to wipe my hard drive clean and reload every program and all my saved files, a two day effort. Dear friends whothink it is not a hack!!!

Assume what yo uhave seen was not the whole story!

Assume they have haked Twitter for 24 hours! but instead of this black page! they designed a page exactly like Twitter logoin page. Then when you enter your username and password thay save it in somewhere and then redirect to actual twitter and and with a robot do an automatic login with your ID and pass! and you have logged in and used your Twitter.

Assume it has been lik this for one week. No one knows whats happening and they are collecting your info with this simple DNS changing idea! then they look at their data base and compare it with actual number of members in Twitter and they see they have ID and pass of 80% of twitter users! they with a robot they login into pages and collect all the infos like their emails and all their connection trees.

When they have every thing! they change the face of the site and they will put that black page for 10 minutes. and you think the whole attack was for 10 minutes not 1 week!!!

Can any body confirm that it is not the case?

Iran Cyber Army was formed earlier this year using local hackers sympathetic with the shi’ite regime of islamic republic (of which the Ashiyane hackers club was the most prominant), as well as being trained by cyber security experts ( chinese, russian, and north koreans).

one potential suspect is a guy named below who is considered the grand wizard in the local black hat scene. below links related to his group before he was scouted / taped by the ICA. he was most likely trained by chinese hackers as some of his early cracking seem to be on chinese sites…

an older pic (’06 or before) here
    http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/475/493/320/Arash.jpg

the IRGC recently announced that they have achieved enough success with the cyber war unit and that they’ll unleash their power on the ‘Green Movement’ as indicated by defacing of a series of gov opposition sites culminating with the main mouthpiece of Mr. Mousavi the mowjcamp (still not up and relocated to mowjcamp.ws )

technically this is not a very complex attack and it could even end up having social engineering component to it beside hacked email passwords to the domain forwarder.

Don’t be doubtful that this hacks are supported and provided by the government. They pay millions of dollars to fight against what they call cyber enemies. Earlier, they had shut down another website which mainly wrote news of Green Movement against Ahmadinejad administration.

  • Kia

To naight????!!!! Khaste nabashi Baradare basiji!

  • Mohammad

I doubt the Iranian government has any role in this. This is a hacker group named Ashiyane which has done similar things before (on NASA website, Israeli websites, etc.). Personally I don’t think they are doing any good to Iran; what we need is to demonstrate that the Green protesters are not the majority. They’re a loud and active minority (at most 30%), as shown by several opinion polls. If the government had coped more fairly with them, they wouldn’t turn this much active.

  • An Iranian

It’s such a shame that some groups in minority do such things under the name of Iran.
It’s just Iran’s government and does nothing with Iranian people.
We just want you to know that this is not us!!

I’ve come across this guy before. He locked out http://www.gertrudejekyll.co.uk/ (she’s a famous flower/planting designer/gardener). I emailed him at the address stated.
He said that the reason he was doing this was because of the way that Iran is being persecuted by the international community (ie. the UN). Which is in fact true, (remember when we funded Sassam Hussein in the west to be rid of the leadership in Iran? google iran iraq war)
I emailed him back and basically said gertrude jekyll was a sweet old lady who designed with plants and that she had nothing to do with the disputes between the west and Iran. The site had been down for the best part of a week, and within twenty four hours the site was back up.
So as far as I’m aware he’s actually quite a reasonable person who is just performing a protest. I certainly don’t support the Iranian government who are a little on the corrupt side for my liking, but I hope that maybe, just maybe a few of you will consider the fact that there is more than one side to an argument.

@Ali, servant of Ali the one-handed ghoul,

Fuck you, fuck Iran, fuck Hizbollah, but particularly fuck that one-handed ghoul you serve. I hear these days he daren’t let even the gravestones of his foes stay in place. While licking his butthole for the money he throws for the likes of you make sure you tell him his nemesis is going stronger than ever. He isn’t going to die like an old man in a comfy bed–they will tear him limb from limb. Absolute political power was no game his little, putrid, autocratic mind could handle.
