DVB-H Gets Boost from HiWire Act

Thursday, July 19th, 2007

dvbh.jpgThe de facto mobile TV standard situation in America may have cleared up just a bit as HiWire has announced a 24-channel lineup using the DVB-H standard in Las Vegas. This content will include seven channels from Discovery Communications including Discovery Channel, Animal Planet, TLC, Discovery Kids and Discovery Mobile; along with six channels from MTV Networks with MTV, CMT, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon, Spike TV and VH-1 in the mix; two channels from Turner Broadcasting including CNN Mobile Live and Cartoon Network; as well as Anime Network, E!, Fox News Channel, Travel Channel, The Weather Channel, MavTV, and AccuWeather.com.

While this numbers three times the content as Qualcomm’s MediaFLO service, what we’re seeing missing is networks. Cable content is good, but where is Fox, NBC, CBS and ABC in all this? Still it sounds like a step in any direction, and that’s what we need to see right now with mobile TV.
