No Components For 1080p

Last week, we posted about how the Xbox 360 will support 1080p, upscale DVDs and upscale your games. We’ve recently learned that copyright restrictions on HD DVD don’t allow 1080p over component cables. AACS over HD DVD format doesn’t allow them to use the component cables for better output than 1080i.

VGA is classified as “authorized computer monitor output”. If you’re on the market for a new HDTV for your Xbox 360, it might be better to wait a little bit or to make sure that the television supports VGA. It seems as though Microsoft has got a little bit of a situation on its plate. Here’s a little recap from Xboxic:

Component:

  • HD DVD: max 1080i (thanks to AACS)
  • DVD: upscaled to max 480p (thanks to CSS)
  • Games: 720p upscaled to 1080p, maybe in the future there will be 1080p native games.
  • VGA:

  • HD DVD: max 1080p
