How to use Instagram Stories

Lookout, Snapchat. Instagram just launched its own Stories feature for sharing everyday moments that disappear. Click the arrow to the right or scroll down to view our animated guide to how Instagram Stories works so you don’t seem obsolete.

Watch Instagram Stories

Once you get the roll out of Instagram Stories, you’ll see a row of Stories from people you follow above the feed. Tap a story to watch the last 24 hours of someone’s 10-second clips.

Fast-Forward

Tap and hold to pause a Story slideshow, tap the left side to rewind, or swipe left to advance to the next person’s story.

Reply

There’s no Liking, but you can swipe up or tap Send Message while watching a story to send someone a private reply.

Create an Instagram Story

Tap the + in the top left of Instagram or swipe right from the feed to create a Story.

Shoot or Upload

You can tap to shoot a photo, tap and hold to shoot a video or upload anything from the last 24 hours of your camera roll.

Draw

Doodle on your Stories with three different brushes and a custom color palette.

Add Emoji

Add emoji as if they were real-world objects to augment your images.

Overlay Text

You can write on top of your ‘Grams, then move and resize the text.

Hide

Your Stories are visible for 24 hours to anyone who can see your profile, but you can hide Stories from specific people, like your boss or family.

Be Creative

The old Instagram is about showing what you’re doing. Instagram Stories is about commenting on, making fun or embellishing your daily moments.
