The Starbucks mobile app with digital tipping options, previewed last week, has arrived in the App Store. iPhone users can grab it now, and get the new digital tipping option if they’re based in the U.S., plus a feature where you just shake your phone to bring up the barcode baristas need to scan to accept your mobile payment.
Other new features include a visual redesign, as well as a new dashboard where you can see your current reward level, the awards that are currently available to you, the Starbucks Pick of the Week and your most recent transactions and messages. Starbucks has also added a way to share your reward level milestones to your social followings, in an attempt to make its loyalty program a little more viral.
In another social network-inspired twist, you now gain access to a feed-style history of your purchases, earned Starbucks Stars, as well as rewards you’ve cashed in. It’s like a Facebook Timeline but for your overpriced coffee addiction.
Starbucks has built a strong mobile payment business on the back of its mobile apps for iPhone and Android, and this iteration could help it reap even more benefits from that side of tis business. Mobile payments account for 14 percent of all of Starbucks’ U.S.-based in-store transactions, the company just announced, which us up from 10 percent when it last crowed about the stat back in July.
