Online movie storefront M-Go wants to be all the devices and screens where viewers plan to watch movies. To that end, it just struck a deal to get its video app embedded on connected TVs from LG, and is working to provide a more personalized experience for users.
M-Go, which is a joint venture between DreamWorks Animation and Technicolor, is the latest in a group of digital video services that have launched over the last few years. Like Walmart’s Vudu and Apple’s iTunes, M-Go is all about transactional movie sales and rentals — that is, video on demand and electronic sell-through titles. It doesn’t dabble in subscriptions like Netflix or Amazon Prime Instant Videos. It’s got deals with five of the six major Hollywood studios to sell and rent their movies to users, including NBCUniversal, Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, Twentieth Century Fox, and Warner Bros. Digital Distribution.
Now it’s working to get the service on as many devices as possible. Since launch last year, it’s been working to get embedded on connected TVs and other video-centric devices, with the ultimate plan being to enable viewers to access videos that they’ve purchased on a bunch of different screens.
Today it’s announcing that the M-Go app will be available on 2012 and 2013 LG Smart TVs, enabling viewers to stream new release videos directly from their TV sets. That’s in addition to previous deals it had struck to get its app on loaded on Samsung and Vizio TVs, Blu-ray players, and tablets.
In addition to the LG partnership, M-Go is also rolling out a more personalized experience for users as part of its apps and website. The new user experience is designed to allow users to create customized “Cards” with films that they have purchased or wish to purchase. In addition to adding specific movies, they can also build Cards for actors, directors, and even genres of different types of movies for personalized recommendations.
The user can then move those cards all up and down throughout the app. Personalization!
