On May 10, 2012, Ellen Pao, former junior investing partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, filed a gender discrimination lawsuit in San Francisco County Superior Court against Kleiner Perkins, alleging workplace retaliation by a male junior partner. She continued to work at the firm until she was terminated on October 1. The firm said Pao was terminated for performance reasons unrelated to the lawsuit. The case went to trial in February 2015. On March 27, 2015, the jury found in favor of Kleiner Perkins.
