Report Points To Russia In “Sophisticated Cyber Intrusion” Of Unclassified Joint Staff Email

A preliminary CNBC report is suggesting that the Russian government is responsible for a “sophisticated cyber intrusion” of an unclassified Joint Staff email server. The server, which affected “4,000 military and civilian personnel,” is still under investigation.

This follows a number of prominent hacks including the recent attack on the Office Of Personnel Management servers that exposed thousands of pieces of personal data. Further detail is unavailable, but the attack seems to be the work of a “state actor.”

The U.S. government shut down the unclassified email system for two weeks and is now investigating the breach. We will post updates as we receive them.
