Second Screen TV Apps Startup Applicaster Pulls In $10.5M Series B Funding

Applicaster is a startup originally out of Israel which offers a number of what’s known these days as ‘synchronised social experiences’. In other words they can literally sync a TV broadcast with a social app, enabling all sorts of fancy advertising and promotional opportunities. This is the much-heralded ‘second screen’ opportunity.

Clearly they’ve convinced a few people because they have now raised a $10.5m Series B funding round. This brings its total funding to date to $18.5M. The new round was led by Israel-based Pitango Venture Capital with participation of current investor, 83North (Formerly Greylock IL).

Applicaster’s offering provides tools for Tier-1 commercial broadcasters. Customers include Univision, Endemol, FremantleMedia, Talpa, Mediaset, Televisa, Telefe, Fox Intl, Mediacorp, and others. The apps integrate into a broadcaster’s platform to create these ‘second screen’ activities. It competes with Cisco and Adobe who also make the kinds of apps for broadcaster platforms.

The funding will support further expansion and the creation of European and North American offices.
