Yahoo announced this morning that it has hired Mike Kail, formerly of Netflix, to take on its chief information officer role, along with the title of senior vice president of infrastructure.
Kail’s background in video is fitting, given Yahoo’s recent attempts to bolster its video content efforts. Yahoo also recently hired Alex Stamos to be its chief information security officer. Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer indicated in a Tumblr post that Kail will start today.
Yahoo remains a company in transition. Its efforts are broad, with a mobile push fitting next to a broader content effort. The company’s effort to stream one concert each day of the year underscores its video goals. Kail, presumably, was picked up to ensure that Yahoo’s technical backing can support its new content efforts.
A source close to the company lauded Kail’s technical background.
What impact Kail will have on Yahoo’s strategy isn’t clear. In its most recent quarterly report, Yahoo disappointed investors by reporting lackluster revenue figures.
Yahoo is up a fraction today, sporting a value of just over $36 billion.
