CollegeHumor Founder Josh Abramson, Boomi Founder Rick Nucci Join FirstMark Capital

FirstMark Capital, investors behind major companies like Pinterest and Aereo, have today brought on two new venture partners at the venture firm: Rick Nucci and Josh Abramson.

If the serial entrepreneur’s name doesn’t immediately register, Josh Abramson’s various companies surely ring a bell. Abramson founded CollegeHumor back in 1999 and led it to become one of the most popular comedy sites on the internet. From there, Abramson went on to lead the Connected Ventures network, which is the parent company of Vimeo, BustedTees and others.

Along with CollegeHumor, Abramson also co-founded these subsidiary brands and companies, which were purchased by Barry Diller’s IAC. Josh has also been an advisor at betaworks.

ricknucciRick Nucci was the founder and CTO of Boomi, a FirstMark-backed on-demand integration technology, and one of two companies that were purchased by Dell and also backed by FirstMark, the other being Scalent Systems.

Boomi was founded in March 2010 and raised a total of $4.9 million in funding before being sold to Dell in 2010. The terms of the deal were not disclosed, but Boomi was one of five companies that Dell acquired in fiscal 2011, to the sum of $413 million for all of them combined.

According to FirstMark, “both are tremendous entrepreneurs and bring great industry insights, operating experience, and deep relationships to the FirstMark community,” and that “these latest additions to the team are another milestone in what has been a great year for FirstMark.”

The venture firm has a broad reach when it comes to portfolio companies, covering everything from consumer-facing media, education, e-commerce and social to enterprise infrastructure, fintech, healthcare and adtech. FirstMark has 14 exits to date, including Netgear, StubHub, and Navic Systems which sold to Microsoft in 2008.

“We’re always looking to bolster all of the things we have been doing and grow our community,” said managing director Amish Jani. “In Josh’s case, he’s built two of the most well-known brands out there – CollegeHumor and Vimeo – with tons of lessons learned along the way. It puts him in a position to offer really unique insights to our portfolio of consumer facing companies. Rick, on the hand, is a cloud product and technology visionary. He’ll be spending a lot of time thinking about new opportunities, and in the meanwhile, he’s a fantastic resource for our SaaS companies to tap into.”
