Exclusive: Jolicloud's netbook will launch first in the UK [Video]

What Is A Meme?

As we reported earlier today, Cloud OS startup Jolicloud has confirmed the “Jolibook” Netbook is coming this month, although we don’t know the price. Well, we may not know the price, but strolling round the Monaco Media Forum today I button-holed founder Tariq Krim, and got him to reveal where the Jolibook will appear first: the UK.

Although my colleague Robin Wauters was showed the device in Dublin at F.ounders two weeks ago, he didn’t get any video. Well, Robin the next round of drinks is on you, because I got some video of the packaging in a 9 minute interview with Krim. Sorry Robin! I also saw the netbook in action but couldn’t take a photo or shoot video. But boy. Wow. This thing is fast, that’s all I can say.

Krim also says a number of new things on the video. Including that they will be launch an Android version of Jolicloud.

However, I can confirm Robin’s story that the Jolibook will run Jolicloud 1.1, come preloaded with Chromium, the open source version of Google Chrome. It’s HTML5-based, will have a dual-core Atom N550 processor (1.5 GHz), will come with a 250GB hard drive, a VGA port and multiple USB sockets and be able to play 720p video. We don’t know the price yet but we understand it will be super affordable.

Founded in 2008, Jolicloud has raised $4.2 million from London-based Atomico Ventures and Mangrove Capital Partners in July 2009.

What we need now is for Chrome OS to completely destroy JoliCloud. Why would I buy a JoliBook if I can buy a SpeedBook from Google running Chrome OS??

It’s a shame this interview completely ignored the elephant in the room

congrats, your comment made my day because i have no clue what you try to say instead of publishing a link to an article which tells me, that you never tried Jolicloud!

if you had tested Jolicloud 1.1 (beta) or “old” 1.0, you would have seen a “Connect through Facebook” that is something that you will not see on Chrome Netbook if and when it comes out …

With the 400 mln Facebook’s users and growing, the JoliBook integrating Facebook users with Google services will get the best of the 2 worlds !

This is smart and easy to use, he did it with netvibes the first destination we visited on internet. Price is the only factor if it can be bought at 200£ range the kids/parents will love it, the first laptop for kids and average joe is going to be jolicloud,

good. because then i can ditch my half assed jolicloud enabled dell that doesnt even recognise hibernate, lid closed or sleep. Nor does it update anymore, nor do they respond to any blog posts or requests. Perhaps they think getting their own hardware is like being apple so they dont have to worry about supporting hardware issues. Soft Fail.

ps i love jolicloud as it was pretty much the only distro that worked on a 32G USB stick. But sucking up 4.2m and not making your basic install work across all hardware in a way that your mum or kids could live with it, #fail. (do you like the way I use #fail as pretence I am now streetwise, lol) Anyway, give me 10% of that and i’ll set up a compatibilty team to resolve the issues and boost the number of people that refer the basic (currently flawed) product.
