Just because you’re a drug dealer of the pre-pay phone persuasion, doesn’t mean you can’t play with everyone’s favourite green robot. Virgin Mobile agree with me on this one, so will soon be offering the Android-powered, QWERTY-slidin’ Samsung Intercept on their pre-paid radio waves.
The announcement was made on Virgin’s Facebook page, along with the following comment:
The question of an Android coming to Virgin Mobile has been a hot topic lately here on Facebook. Well, we’re happy to confirm that our next handset launch will be the Samsung Intercept. Check out the photo below, get excited, & stay tuned over the next few weeks for more information!
As you can see, there are no details on price or release date, but — judging by the large “Unlimited” emblazoned on the phone, above — it seems that the Intercept will be available with unlimited text, data, and email on one of their Beyond Talk plans, which range from $25 to $60 per month.
Virgin Mobile’s other smartphone — the BlackBerry Curve — requires an additional monthly $10 “BlackBerry Fee”, but it isn’t clear if this will become a “Smartphone fee” or remain in-place for BlackBerries only.
The Intercept is the successor to the Samsung Moment, and features Android 2.1 with a 3.2″ 240×400 TFT display, 3.2MP camera, GPS, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi. Notably, it only supports the-slightly-slower-than-the-Moment EVDO rev 0.
