DIY: Hand-drawn holograms

I remember playing with holograms as a kid. Bill Beaty, “Science Hobbyist,” can’t get enough of them. Apparently they are not that hard to make yourself. Examples of types of surfaces that you can start out on are styrene plastic (front of CD-ROM jewel box) or the clear plastic in cheap picture frames. According to Beaty, “scratch holograms can be made on CD cases using a couple of thumbtacks poked through a stick.” Once you’ve mastered that, you can go pro with a professional compass and black painted polycarbonate.
