Mario Kart Wii: Steering wheel just OK?

Only so-so?

Spring is right around the corner, and with it Mario Kart Wii, the latest version of Nintendo’s seminal racer. Nintendo let IGN play with it for a minute (actually, under an hour, I only used “minute” to sound worldly); IGN liked the game. The Wii steering wheel, eh, that took some getting used to.

First, the game itself. You’ve played it already, several times and on several different platforms. It’s the same old game, which is to see it’s mindless fun. There’s no snaking this time around, however.

Back to the wheel. Nintendo assures us that it’s the preferred option of its game testers, though IGN admits to a rather steep learning curve. You have to get to know where the “dead zones” are, where the “center” is and feel out the turning radius. There’s only minimal force feedback (the rumble of the Wiimote itself), so that’s another knock against it. Sounds like one too many hoops to jump through to me, but more patient gamers are probably better off going this route.

Again, she’s out this Spring. Exactly when that means, who knows.
