SIM cards to get NFC payments soon, but will it be enough?

Subscriber Identity Modules, or SIMs, might be on the verge of extinction. SIMs themselves are getting smarter, now capable of doing far more than hold your cell number and a phonebook of your friends. The problem is that most carriers — especially those in the USA — don’t give a rat’s pooper for the capabilities. That means they’re treated as little more than a commodity.

The SIM industry is hoping to change that, though, by including New Field Communications, or NFC, with new SIMs. This is the promised tech that would let you pay for things by touching a pay pad with your cellphone.

Will anyone here care? Probably not. Right now, touch-to-pay with key fobs are all across the country, but we still diligently swipe our debit cards to get our coffees. That being said, the debit card replaced cash slowly, so perhaps this might catch on?
