Nintendo's Harrison Says Game Boy On Its Way Out

Portable gaming would straight up not exist if it weren’t for Nintendo’s Game Boy. I remember receiving an ORIGINAL model back in 1989 as a gift and I fell in love with it instantly. Tetris, Super Mario Land. Almost every game became an instant classic to me. Now there’s word that Nintendo may retire the Game Boy for good. With increasing popularity surrounding the Nintendo DS, the need for the Game Boy Advance is rapidly declining.

George Harrison, Nintendo’s Senior Vice Prez of Marketing, had the following to say regarding the Game Boy:

“This year in our marketing you really won’t see much push against Game Boy itself, so it will kind of seek its own level. It’s hard to say in the future if we will ever bring back the Game Boy trademark,”

Oooh, speculation. It’s obvious that the Game Boy is dying out and garnering less and less attention every year, but a total kill-off of the system? We’ll have to wait until 2008 says Harrison. Nintendo is doing a lot of things and getting rid of a staple of my childhood may be one of those things. It will be a truly sad day in gaming when “it” happens.
