In an attempt to appease the European gaming market, Sony’s Phil Harrison released a statement regarding the PlayStation 3 delay in Europe, stating that Sony has in fact tried to do too much by implementing Blu-Ray into its new console. According to Sony, the manufacturing of the Blu-Ray diode is the cause for PS3 shortages worldwide, and PS3 delays to other countries.
We have overreached in production of the Blu-Ray component – I can’t deny that. But that’s the price you pay for adopting brand new, leading-edge technologies that will be future proof. We will resolve those issues – we are already catching up.
We will continue to catch up on the production, and as you know, we haven’t changed our full-year forecast of six million units [by March 2007], so we’re only talking about a ramp-up issue. We’re not talking about the fundamental design of the product itself,” he added. There’s no denying that we’ve had some very public challenges. Today, it looks like a very difficult situation – but in the weeks, months and years to come, this will pale into zero.
I’m not sure what Harrison meant by “future proof,” because in the tech-industry, there really isn’t any such thing. Harrison also talked about the implementation of HDMI into the lower-end 20GB model of the PS3, stating that it was following a market trend in display manufacturers, who are selling more displays with HDMI support. It’s about time Sony said something to the European market, with all the bad publicity it’s been getting, it needs to stop acting like it doesn’t care about its consumers.
